Written in 1934 90 years ago and as fresh and poignant as the day it was written. Donny Hathaway’s version is by far my favorite.

Please no hate replies for what I am about to write. Firstly, yes Alicia has a beautiful and powerful voice Second, she is pretty good on the keyboards Third, this is an old song originally sung by the jazz greats such as Billie Holiday and Nat King Cole. A beautiful song which was ruined on this occasion. The problem is with the style adopted. This is a melodic, sweet love song not a modern era power ballad. Sadly Alicia applied an huge overkill approach to this song which ruined it's integrity as a classic American standard. If any modern day stars should sing it then perhaps Diana Krall. Natalie Cole did a gorgeous cover. I may be getting on but I know my jazz standards and that restraint is often required and soft phrasing to work such tender and beautiful material. It's a pity that Alicia did not perform a song more suited to the event if her intention was to go bold and almost brazen. To put it another way you wouldn't want to hear Moon River blasted out as an eighties power ballad by an artist such as Bonnie Tyler. She remains a lovely human being and a huge talent it's just on this occasion many people who were around to hear the original and the legends of jazz, this was a major disappointment.

Alicia sings this beautiful song wayyyy better than Jennifer Hudson. You can understand what’s she saying. Jennifer screams to much. Only the people who knows the song knew what she was saying, the rest had no idea if it was a singing or she was just only
    . 😥😥

I have to agree. Sadly I think very few young people today have any knowledge or appreciation for the greats such as Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and of course the great Ella Fitzgerald. Modern music seems to promote OTT as the way to go. The more dramatic and loud the better! A lot of modern day talent shows have a lot to blame for putting the emphasis on overt expression. Can you imagine Billie Holiday on America's Got Talent? It really is a sad state of affairs. Please people listen to Nat King Cole or Dinah Washington sing this song. Yes they are not replicates of the song but they all know how to treat the material with the respect it deserves.
