I was so nervous to do the show and venture into the comments but of course the MinnMax community is full of positivity! Thank you so much everyone for the nice comments, it really is a huge boost! Can't wait for the Two Tenns discussions!
Man you couldn't have asked for a better person to donate than Haley, she just seems so comfortable in front of the camera and microphone, it's incredible!
Dang, Haley rules! Please have her back as a guest in the future and we can all hear more stories about watching Space Jam inside Apple Vision Pro or something. 😆
My assumption is that a big company like Ubi avoiding the term "Metroidvania" in marketing is legal probably being like "Hey don't reference the names of games that we don't make."
I think it's more of an EA "don't say Brutal Legend is an RTS" kinda situation where they don't want to alienate the more casual PoP fans by throwing around a word they aren't familiar with, fans of MV can tell what it is, they just decide to describe it with more words "exploration based action/adventure platformer"
OK look you can NEVER offer the "Join the Podcast" auction item again. There's no way I'd have the BALLS to follow Haley in there. She's the absolute coolest
I said it once and I will say it again: there is something special about a Janet and JeffM episode. But now, and with all due respect to Janet and JeffM, there is something special about a Haley De Boom episode. She was amazing. Bring. Her. Back.
Jeff’s experience with Avatar’s traversal design is the same way I felt about Jedi Survivor, especially coming off TOTK. One being gleefully intuitive while the other was not.
That fast food mayhem is why I started watching New Show+. I'd always said ehhh, I don't have the time, and then I heard Leo driving from restaurant to restaurant with Dan telling him what to order and said oh, no, I will be making the time. And I have ever since!
Janet and JeffM are an underrated podcast duo, they play off eachother so well! Thanks for covering Super Crazy Rhythm Castle. Good or bad that game is weird enough that I'm very glad it exists.
Surprised by Jacob’s Steam Deck OLED and RE4 VR takes. As someone who chose to upgrade, the OLED deck was 100% worth paying a couple hundred extra for. I use my OLED 75% more often than I used the OG. It just feels so much more enticing to pick up and play. RE4 VR is such a joy. Like Village, it takes a bit to get comfortable with, but once you do it is legitimately some of the most fun you can have gaming. The aliasing Jacob mentioned is mostly for objects at a distance. Up close objects, like your pistol, are about as sharp as I’ve seen in PSVR2. I feel like Jacob should have at least done a full playthrough to experience some of the later stuff in VR. That first Garrodos encounter was incredibly tense. To each their own though
For context, Jacob also is someone who uses the Quest 2 headset and feels like thats the pinnacle of graphical fidelity he really needs in a headset. No shade about it, perfectly fine to be that way, just providing reference for his tastes in needing the latest and greatest hardware. If someone owned the original Steam Deck and thought "wow this is great I dont even see how this could be meaningfully better", more power to them and I'm honestly jealous as Id save a lot of money if I felt the same way lol. Theres a ton of people who felt the same way about the Nintendo Switch og too, even today some do (although I think many are starting to agree that really needs a pretty drastic upgrade at this point)
1:42:30 Good call Haley, Jackbox streams are always fun. I also really liked the Gamedle stream, and the board game stream a while back. This may sound weird, but gamers like.... games? Especially if they're interactive with the audience.
That GoW Valhalla talk brought back memories of beating the berserkers and Gna. Good times. Also, shame on everyone who hasn't played, talked and given Blasphemous 2 the credit it deserves! For Blasphemous 1 too!
i can kind of get why they dont want to use metroidvania or roguelike as terms in marketing, since they refer to other games vs something like action or adventure
Get a load of this: I'm Canadian and I say Decal the way you are familiar with. Canada has regional accents/pronunciations just like America, and every other country on Earth.
Genuinely intrigued by Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown as i loved the classic 16 bit Prince of Persia, which I feel is always forgotten when we talk about many of that era's great games.
Far Cry Primal fan here, Jacob. Also JeffM's frustration with navigation in AFOP is so funny to me. I guess sight reading in games is just very different between folks.
I came around to the controls for fortnite festival.. if you think of is as the buttons on the controller are left to right as they are on screen it flows nicely
I've been taking a look at the 2024 release schedule... and man, it looks like it's coming out swinging hard against 2023 for 'best year in video games for a long ass time'. Some incredible titles dropping in 2024, and early too.
OMG Haley De Boom!!! PLEASE HAVE HALEY ON ALL THE TIME!!! She is AMAZING FULL STOP!!!!! Incredible!! Wild that she is working on Vision Pro, since I plan on buying it!! Can’t wait! Also Haley what is your Steam Game’s name? Thanks!
For science: I can flare my nostrils, wiggle both ears, maybe the tongue thing, and can only independently raise my left eyebrow. Also, there was definitely a trend of restaurants having paper covering a table and handing adults a bunch of crayons. I haven't seen it in awhile though.
Gonna VERY hard disagree and say the Steamdeck OLED is fantastic, higher refresh rate (makes most non-AAA games look SO MUCH smoother), better colors, much longer battery life, and best of all, a bigger screen. Also aside from 'etched glass' screens on some of the higer end models, OLEDs normally perform WORSE in direct sunlight (aren't as bright as regular LCDs) their advantage is deeper blacks and wider colors.
It's a stupid take. Elden Ring literally has a light point in the general direction of where you are supposed to go and nothing more, and yet where was his criticism of it being too vague???
Haley was an awesome guest and she's been around forever it seems like. I listened to the max spoilers of space jam before watching the movie and my favorite line from your discussion was a quote from some guy in your past going like "I just love brands!" 😂 Also butt kissing time, i really appreciate the sound levels of your podcasts because I've been listening to another gaming podcast and these 2 guys are interesting but they don't talk loud and they don't adjust their volumes so I'm at max volume and still trying to hear what they say. While with minnmax content audio levels have always been at an enjoyable level
I think 20/25 hours is a great lenght to aim for for a Metroidvania that wants to be priced at 50$, Metroid Dread got a lot of flack for being 60 and relatively short for the genre.
In prior episodes, Janet would talk for a really long time, cut people off in conversation, and appear too defensive at times. She really surprised me on this episode of the MinnMax show. It's great to see her improve as a podcaster.
1:55:51 - "WIll video games ever stop feeling embarassed of themselves. Why does [gaming] feel the need to chase Hollywood even in 2023?" I know that basically everyone else was hotter on the show than me, but I share that same perception as someone who doesn't really watch much TV. Everytime a celebrity somewhat connected to gaming gets on stage, it feels like an assertion that the people in the industry aren't good enough to be on that stage.
Really appreciate Jacob shouting out Blasphemous 2, which I hope is a success for that studio. I haven't gotten around to it in this very packed year, but I 100 percented the first one last year and I couldn't believe how great it is relative to its very modest fame. Also, while I cannot fathom dropping $70 to play what sounds like a boiler plate Ubisoft open world Avatar game, I still think it's a sociologically interesting release in the sense that it feels like something that would've been a pretty big hit a 15, maybe even 10 years ago. Very curious to see how it fares in the current market.
Wow, I couldn’t disagree more with Jacob on re4 vr. Both the quest version and psvr2 version are great - but the visuals on psvr2 are stunning and the responsiveness / connectedness is outstanding. Somehow the reprojection isn’t too aggressive either. I think Jacob is the outlier here if you check anyone else’s review of re4 vr.
The Lego Fortnite bit. I'm not a fan of Fortnite whatsoever, and I'm slowly gravitating towards the survival aspects of some games. I do, however, watch some streamers play a lot of Project Winter, and Lego Fortnite is giving me heavy Project Winter vibes. I can see myself losing a few hours of sleep with my friends and family and a few randoms playing this. Are you telling me there's deception in this?
Anytime I see a person that was a part of the community, now on the show, I never find them to be all that interesting. Minnmax seems to be the only exception to this rule since anyone they bring on from the community knocks it out of the park! Some of you Minnmax fans need to go over other gaming outlets because they desperately need more interesting, funny, smart or even just knowledgeable with video game history, people 🤣
It's strange how games media have normalized referring to people who enjoy combat or interactivity as freaks, sickos, masochists or people who like smashing their head against a wall in a medium where interactivity and combat is the defining language.
"I keep getting lost in stupid nonsensical ways." That's exactly why I didn't like Horizon Forbidden West. I know that it's just the way Pandora is, but if the environment in your game is extremely cluttered, you need to explicitly telegraph where the player is supposed to go.
I enjoyed Elden Ring but not nearly as much as everyone else. In Horizon it was more "What am I supposed to climb?". The foliage in that game is so dense. It was like I could see everything and nothing at the same time if that makes sense. I'm not trying to attack your game. I wish I liked it. All I'm saying is better graphics sometimes means the game is less legible imo.
It is pretty obvious that Janet played GoW on easy since she said that only by pressing R1 you complete the game. LOL Maybe try a harder difficulty or be more open on what difficulty you played the game on before a comment like that.
@@notjustsad I didn't say it is not a legitimate way to play, I'm saying it is disingenuous to represent a game based on a difficulty she played in, If she played in hard she wouldn't have the same opinion.

You were a pleasure to listen to 😁 Good job! Hope you return 🎉
Next year they should have a donation tier to bring you back for December 2024 !
So has Ben offered you a position at MinnMax yet? You were great on the show?
Haley DaBomb! It was so cool to hear about your Animation work! You crushed it!
Enjoyed listening! Thank you 😋
Hayley needs to be a regular host! No joke she was great!
The new intro is on point 😂
Great episode! Was great hearing from a member of the community. You’re a natural, Haley!
Trying to latch onto Minn max positivity. Haven’t been in the best mental place lately. Minn max is always a big help. ✌️
Phenomenal job in the guest seat, Haley. Sans context, I would've just assumed you were a seasoned podcaster I didn't yet know.
Hell yeah! So great to see Haley on! Plus I'm so excited for the Second Wind Trivia Tower!
Great episode! Absolutely crushed it, Haley!
About had an anxiety attack during JeffMs avatar rant. Great episode!
i liked hearing him fired up about it
Haley was great!
Great episode. Haley was so interesting.
Haley crushed it. Would watch her on another one.
Appreciate JeffM’s take on Avatar. I really want to spend time in this world, but I don’t want to fight against these game systems.
My assumption is that a big company like Ubi avoiding the term "Metroidvania" in marketing is legal probably being like "Hey don't reference the names of games that we don't make."
Interesting! Definitely could be it.

Great show as always. Haley was De Bomb!

Really enjoyed this one! Hayley was so chill and eloquent, I'd probably embarrass myself lmao
Was not expecting the intro. Hilarious! Ben having a shaved head means he did something weird on a charity stream. Hanson looks good with it.
How did they manage to find the coolest person in the entire world to be a guest on the podcast

The Steamdeck OLED display is unreal compared to the frankly poor original Steamdeck. Shocked Jacob doesn’t see the fuss or major difference.

I think it might be a Nova Scotia thing, they pronounce many words differently than the rest of Canada
Totally disagree on the resi 4 VR much prefer the PSVR2 over the quest version
Sounded like they were trying to do "yeah" by usher
Haley De Boom is a perfect fit for this podcast. She could quite easily be a regular.
Highly recommend playing Blasphemous 2 with the Spanish language audio with subtitles for more immursion in that world. That game is excellent.

Loving the Lego Fortnite love, looks like a dream to this ancient legoer 😁
I feel like Fortnite skins are the modern day equivalent to collecting action figures.
At least that’s how I keep justifying it… 😂

Thankful for Jacob talking me down on spending a stupid amount of money upgrading to the Steam Deck OLED
Erase that as a fact from your mind. Maybe that’s an east coast thing but Canadians across the board DO NOT pronounce decal like that
Janet doesn't want to get into specifics and then giggles. I saw that! Haha😂
I promise no one will be mad if you guys don’t talk abt fortnite
Ben was a little too rude to JeffM this ep. I know JeffM is kinda the punching bag like Kyle used to be at GI but it was a bit much this ep.
It's strange how games media have normalized referring to people who enjoy combat or interactivity as freaks, sickos, masochists or people who like smashing their head against a wall in a medium where interactivity and combat is the defining language.

We talked about 10 games on this episode and we really liked 8 of them. Thanks for watching! ;)
