She wrote and produced that whole album The Lion and The Cobra at 19. The way she uses her voice going from soft to strong, low to high in an instant was her signature in The Alternative world of Music. That came out my junior year of college and the whole album floored me. It is such a Masterpiece
There's a great live version of this, just Sinéad accompanying herself on acoustic guitar. Obviously you don't get the lush, cinematic production, just simple strummed chords - but the intensity is off the charts, especially at the end where after the line "Makes no difference what you say", she suddenly bellows out "YER STILL A FOCKIN' LIAR!"
The song is really about her abusive mother who used to lock her in a dark room as a punishment (among other things). The reference to Troy comes from a poem by William Butler Yeats; "Why, what could she have done, being what she is? Was there another Troy for her to burn?". Great reaction from you, as always.
Check out Sinead's version of Elton John's song Sacrifice. Absolutely stunning. Her own song 'Three Babies' is beautiful too. Best female artist of all time in my opinion. R I P Sinead.
Troy is 1 of my favourites from her. Sinead was one of the best female vocalists Ever in my opinion! You should listen to this track live absolutely amazing I just love so many songs of hers. Rest in peace Sinead
She was my favourite artist for the last few decades, and she was so inspirational for me growing up in Ireland. I really miss her...she has so many songs....maybe check out Raglan Rd (a traditional Irish song)
The song is a timeless masterpiece and Sinead wrote it when she was only 18 or 19 years old. The live versions of Sinead singing Troy are even more intense.
This song is perfect, her vocals and the intensity in her lyrics are an excellent representation of the human condition when we love someone more than they are willing or able to love us.
Few other artist have expressed the level of passion and as you said intensity. Her videos are all epic performances and the production is First Class, Top Shelf. Her lyrics, voice and image is One Of A Kind. Gone way to soon like many of the great ones.
I was privileged to see her in concert back in 1990. She was stunning and so atmospheric, certainly unique and so different. She deserved much more success and recognition than she already had or currently has.
She was such a great artist! This is a masterpiece, was my survival song, but listen also to The last day of our acquintance and to this is to mother you
So many great songs to listen to…. My two current favourites are Black boys on mopeds and Famine (she raps) This is a great live version ua-cam.com/video/JyLnbjtBLX4/v-deo.htmlsi=OYeALeCf_efm92Hs Ps yes she did write Troy.
She's asking her mom "Does God love you" Look what you are doing to me!! It's not what a mom should do to her beautiful daughter but maybe I should forgive you and love you instead and will that lead to us getting closer? "should I pull you closer" ?
Sinead studied many religions including African .she outed the Catholic church and the wrong doing especially against youg children .she refused to acknowledge the shame put upon people in relation to religion.through studying many religions and music influences I guess she was trying to find something spiritual and true to believe in .... She was an amazing woman and artist R.I.P Sinead 💜

She used to lock her out in the back garden too and leave her bedroom light on
Sinead wrote Troy when she was only 17 years old.
