    Delightful informative video as always. I often put soot on molds like this. Saw someone do it a generation ago, as part of casting Tin soldiers of all things. It just became my general method. Especially if using an Acetylene torch, you have a free soot-generator in your hand!

      i`m an amatuer with this . just got my first crucible and have about an ounce of 12 - 24 karat gold cut into bits to work with . today i found i need a better directional head foro my torch as i cannot get into the depths of my cup with a standard hand held plumbers torch . any advice for someone who will have to buy low end hand held torches? OH and a fun thing i discovered years ago , if you happen across an "ove glove" at a drug stores as seen on tv isle or where ever , absolutely buy it . t is made of kevlar and nomex , you can reach into a burning firepit with the glove and hold a flaming ember besotted stick for a full 3 minutes before you feel and heat XD.

    Andrew, thanks for your videos. I'm semi-retired after 52 years in this game, was never work as I always enjoyed the trade too much. I recently purchased one of these tips, but at the time didn't realize it was for propane, I'm set up for acetylene and was wondering if you've herd of any one being able to switch this tip over? Something you might want to try, I use a 3/8" carbon rod, coated with a bit of boric acid to stir my melting pot, picks up the impurities, springs, and excess dross keeping my crucible clean for next time. Cheers, Bill in B.C., Canada

How can I clean it? There's a layer of dirt and grime all over every sq. mm of it. Should I soak it in something? Vinegar maybe?

    Hello, I've got a different torch that attaches directly to a cartridge (which is 600ml of propane-butane mix), and yes it melts silver in small quantities, however, if I put a little bit more, like a solid piece of 40g (about 1.5 oz.) of 925 silver it just won't melt. I've been trying to melt it for almost an hour and nothing. It turns the silver into one solid glowing piece. Can anyone help? I don't want to saw it into smaller pieces since I feel like it's just a waste of material

    I’ve tried this and can’t get it to work. I’m trying to melt bronze which is a lower melting temp than gold. Using the same rosebud tip plus same Smith mini torch and same gas (propane). Andrew, what tank system are you using? I’m using disposable tanks and the oxygen runs out after 20 minutes. The metal never gets hot enough to pour out of my crucible. It turns into a rock before I can drop it into the ingot mold.

    If I were to make something like a signet ring or class ring, would it better to start by casting it? or with a silver/gold bar?

    • @leonardpearlman4017
      @leonardpearlman4017 10 місяців тому

      ??? Well, I think people cast such things to economize on material and to allow very elaborate work. If you start by making a solid piece, will you end up carving it into the form you want? People DO that! It might generate a lot of waste? I think it's something you have to decide based on your design.

    Good day from Canada. Please let me thank you for all your help. I have been learning so much watching your videos on UA-cam. Since my retirement I decided to start doing rings with silver and been having a lot. Of fun doing it. I keep all my scrap and test that I did and decided to melt them down to make new project. I get my silver to melt nicely then I poor it in a little mould that I got and make little bars. Then the trouble starts. Since I don’t have a press I try hammering down my bar and it cracks on me. What do you think I’m doing wrong. Since I’m doing this for pleasure I don’t want to invest in a press do you have any suggestions thank you in advance

      scrap metals have impurities like solder, ur bar will crack because its not pure metal, best bet is to use fresh metals and casting grain. thats just my theory. but no one has seemed to answer ur question yet.

    1) Do you have air extraction over your casting area, the burning oil gives of some seriously nasty chemicals?
    2) I do melt silver and find that I get a green burn to my retina, if you are regularly looking at molten metal should you not at least use a darkened glass? I find polarising sun glasses prevent the dreaded green spots.

      With the amount of infrared light being emitted, you can in fact do permanent damage to your eyes. Best to use some flip-up torch glasses that will filter out that infrared. A complete guess, but I think shade 4 should be sufficient - people silver brazing bicycle frames generally use shade 4 or 5.

      Certain alloys of 18ct white gold just wont melt down and you have come across that alloy. You won’t be able to melt it down at all not even using the smiths little torch. I would send it off to the refiners and get some fresh gold in return albeit a lot less in weight

I took it to be repaired and they said it must have been a returned item that they attempted to repair and failed. It has fire scale all over the copper and the break was just the solder blob that cracked off. So disappointed, i have tried to contact them but the email contact on the site says their is an error and I cant get them on the phone......

      @@Atthebench Yup. It is clear. What I say is, if it is not less harmful for the alloy to settle in paraffin than in oil. I am referring to the possible creation of more toxic and dirtier waste. I have always used paraffin, which is more volatile.

    You said to burn off the oil in the mold, but you showed pouring the gold in with liquid oil still IN the mold?

      Me Now when the ingot mould is new, that's when you should burn off the oil initially. This ingot mould is many years old and has plenty of carbon on it. So the ingot pours better with excess oil in it.
