Telefunken m15's have static tape guides as well and the tape actually goes around them in an 45 degree angle. Also on winding. And that's a machine that makes a lot of hours. If that doesn't kill the tape, I wouldn't be too worried abou those things killing the tape. It does seem a bit of a non-issue. Also the back tension of the recorder is adjusted to static rollers so I'm not sure if this is actually a good idea, unless they also did something about that. As for the front bias; Akai GX-646/747 and Philips N4520 had it too. It's a more common function on cassette decks but some reel to reels had it and it's bloody ideal if you use many sorts of tapes. Obviously playing around with this controls won't put the initial calibration off, you just have to put them back where they came from which is in the middle. To me 'there's a button let's see what it does' is something people should do because otherwise you get tech-scared people. Actually with the Akai auto reverse machines you can calibrate them in both directions which is, indeed, a smart thing. Makes perfect sense to make it only record in one direction.
Steve Hoffman praises the “accurate representation of a flat output signal.” The decks he is selling are pro-sumer decks that professionals endorse for important projects. I would put my money on a J-Corder Deck outpacing a UHA 12 deck. The J-Corder outclasses a lot of high end dacs.
I have no means of comparing them, as I replied in the other one; There's some factual things wrong, or at least questionable. His explanations don't really match the real world. That said, the BR-20 UHA uses and these Technics machines are really comparable, quality wise. All absolutely magnificent.
