  • What a mad day up at Kinglake! Troopy had its first actual 4wding experience, safe to say it made Adam want to spend more money on his car... We ended the day on a bit of a downer but sometimes thats how it goes!

    Skinny muddies do extremely well in mud, rocks and sand if you have the correct tyre pressure.

    To the guy with the troopy.
    Your getting a rear locker. Good idea, but realize one thing, especially if your going to eventually go 35's or larger. The Axle Flange studs may not hold up. The 40-90 Series used 6 x 8mm studs. They are not really up for the extra stress. My 75 Troopy broke heaps of them when I fitted lockers. I eventually changed over to chrome molly studs but even then, I had them backing out (coming undone and disappearing on the track). In retrospect, that may have been because I had snapped and had to easyout so many stock ones that the hub was probably stuffed. The threads were probably not the best due to constantly having to drill out the studs, not always getting the drill holes in the middle of the studs :(
    I eventually installed 10mm studs and all my stud snapping and unscrewing issues disappeared. But there was a down side. The spring cones and nuts stick slightly proud of the center hub, so you need to remove them if you want to change a tyre. Not a huge thing, but it does mean changing a rear flat takes an extra 10 minutes or so to change while you remove and refit the Axle stud nuts, washers and cones.
    The chrome molly 8mm studs are probably the better idea (providing they are going into a hub that hasn't had the stud threads butchered already).
    From memory, Chrome Molly stud kits are about $120 per side.
    A set of 10mm studs from a 100 Series cost about $25 per side. You will also need a 10mm drill and a M10 10mm X 1.5 Tap to cut new threads.
    PS. Dont think that the Troopy cant be made to keep up with your mates. Mine with about 4" lift, 37" tires on beadlock rims, winch front and rear, some extra barwork usually goes where others cant even though it lacks power. And that can be rectified with either a turbo or a supercharger.

      Want do you mean by that?

    • @benjohnson6833
      @benjohnson6833 5 років тому

      @@JS-tb9hu well when you go down a hill forwards, do you put it in low4 first gear and crawl? Yes.
      Same applies in reverse. It gives you more control. Last thing you want on a hill is the car turning sideways because you couldn't control it.
      Plus locking up the brakes on a muddy hill, no matter what direction, is bad because you'll usually pick up more speed.
