Thank you for showing the step by step. This is exactly my plan. Great job!
Glad to help, Stacy! Good luck with your build!
I could only imagine how long it took to take apart everything and put back together with the new desk, shoish! Looks nice as hell doe!
Thanks Jay! I have a ton of work to do on cable management still, but i'm loving the desk for sure!
@@RAVisuals I don't think I need 6 ft of countertop space I've got two 23 in monitors and a 15.6 laptop how many feet do you suggest
The HD counter top is better than the Ikea, its real wood not veneer
Does that mean it won't sag?
@@kungfupandas1 I've had mine for quite a while and it has not sagged. It has warped though but that's because I only finished the top surface instead of both.
Hope u finished the bottom side of the butcher block also if not it will warp.
Love the vid and seeing you go through the whole process. I am in a similar situation putting together a new standing desk setup and the last piece of the puzzle is a rock solid top. I just can't decide which to go with home depot like yours or ikea karlby. Are you still using this desk/butcher block? Did the wood snap where your monitor arm is? Did you have to keep oiling the whole desk top and bottom? I'd appreciate any tips for prepping the table top because I'm a total newb.
There is a store called Floor & Decor here in Charlotte that has a 72x36x1.5 Hevea wood butcher block for $200. I plan to buy this Autonomous frame and the butcher block and but it to 74x32. It's going to be so nice!
Nice set up butcher block wood *genius* 🤩
Thanks 👍! I love it!
@@RAVisuals I ended up just ordering a contour black top for the d.i.y kit because wait for wood workers was months upon quote. Good job I am really gonna refer back to this once I assemble mine
Hello! I’m just wondering which standing desk you purchased. The $349 or the $499? I’m planning to buy a 6ft wood piece from Home Depot.
How is this setup holding up? Any sag? Or does the underframe basically prevent that from being possible.
Great vid! how many coats of the satin top coat did you use? Also now that its roughly 3 months since video is made, how is the desktop holding up? Have the exact same butcher block/stain in mind.
Hey man! I actually did 2 coats but you really only need to do one. And it’s great! Not coming off or anything. The most sturdy desk I’ve ever had!
Is the Ikea Karlby any better? Or the laminate countertops like LILLTRÄSK ?
Also would the Autonomous desktops handle the monitor clamps ?
Welp just like you I couldn't find Alex Drawers anywhere so I bought this DIY desk stand and bought my butchers block from Home Depot. Gonna be a fun out. Also snagged that monitor stand with your link.
How did it go?
I run a triple monitor setup along with my PlayStation Xbox and Nintendo Switch consoles, can this desk fit everything?
I believe it could! Just have to be smart about how you set everything up
Hi, great informative video 👍🏼
I have seen other YT people do sanding for this counter top. Curious why you didn't do it and what would be the difference if we dont 🤔
Awesome video!
Dude you're like the only one who mentioned having to have extensions on cables. Can you put in the description box what cables you have to order I am so clueless when it comes to technology and electronics. I have a docking station on my desk as well as monitor stands with HDMI and display cables running
They're already in the description! I had to use usb 3 cable extensions to reach my pc
These two comments made me chuckle, and sigh; "we made our own butcher block desktop right here, so....", "every one of these bolts right here I had to uh screw every one of those in myself...".
Well, at least I got a reaction out of you 🤷🏼♂️
Hey, so you used the screws that were provided or did you get others to fit the thickness of the countertop? Thanks
Make sure to poly both the top and bottom otherwise a butcher block will warp!
It’s wood no it won’t.
The bolts that you mentioned that you screwed by yourself. Did you create a hole on the wood before screwing them in or just screwed them in with force? Sry.. I am a bit of a noob so just wondering
great video, been thinking about building a new desk for a WHILE i just need the funds
Good job bro keep doing what you do
Thanks, will do!
How did you do the measuring of the autonomous frame against the table? Did you flip the table and placed the frame on it or the other way around?
Exactly what you said. Lines it up and marked some holes before flipping it over and screwing the counter top to it
I picked up the same butcher block from Home Depot and intend to do the same replacing the current top of my electric standing desk with it. The base is meant to hold a top that is at least 48” long. Since this top is 75” do you think the base will still support this new top?
welcome to the club brotha! I love mine!!
I got the 2 alex drawers (bought them before covid) and am picking up the top and the coating stuff at home depot today, also got some small support leg things (randomfrankP uses them) which ill use as well, I am excited to see how this all turns out, have a monitor mount as well and i had the limnon as well and it bowed a lot so atm i just have my monitors on the desk and have such little space, this video was perfect so i knew what coating to get and how it would look, love thee dark color, overall great video thanks!
No problem!! Im sure you're super stoked to see how it turns out!
I’m doing this myself as well. What screws did you use and where did you get the e rubber grommets? Thanks
Thinking about doing the same desk layout as you. Quick question: When applying the satin top coat, how many coats did you use? DId you wipe it off with a rag after applying? Did you do any extra sanding or other treatments? Thanks
nope! you can sand it down a bit if there's random notches you don't like or if you want round corners but I just applied the satin coat and that's all you have to do.
great vid man love it looks good man big upgrade. LOL randomfrankp lol i feel you man long cables lol
Tell me about it! Cables are going to be a nightmare!
Hey buddy I was wondering how the sit stand components are working just to see if the motors went out or something like that
Not at all man! Still going strong!
Nice setup. Whats the keyboard. It’s not the Logitech in the description.
Thanks man! Yeah I have a ton of custom keyboards, that one is a GK61
Hi. Can it support a pc and monitor and maybe couple other things.
So...yah....so....yah....so....ya.....so....yah good vid
so...yeah...sarcasm 👌
3 years later, how is this desk holding up? Any regrets or something you wish you did in hindsight?
I’m working on getting my dream setup done and wanted your input please
this looks beautiful man
nice job brother
Thank you! Cheers!
@@RAVisuals 😍
Did they give you the screws with the frame? I am also building my own Autonomous DIY desk and was curious if I should also pick up some screws to mount the top!
Nope it came with the screws and I just drilled them right in!
@@RAVisuals Awesome thanks for sharing! Love the video.
@@RAVisuals did you pre drill the holes? Or did you go for it with the screws?
Bruh I literally just bought this exact same stuff 😂 maybe I got the BB from Lowe’s but still. Thanks for putting this together so I know how to do it Lmaooo
No problem!!
I really enjoy your videos. Every videos I watched, I dropped a like on it. You deserve more subs.
Legend! Thanks man!
Awesome video, nice to see a dope setup! Quick question, the top from Home Depot is the 72 inches one? If so, did you order the regular Home Office or Premium frame? I see the site says they both support 300lbs. I just don't see clearly if there's a big difference between the 2 frame. If maybe one support larger tops better or something else. Hoping to hear from you soon!
hey! thanks man! I ordered the home office. It supports the top I got perfectly. I believe I actually got a longer one.
where can I get some of that white rocky looking patterned stuff you had behind your monitors? Never known what its called but love it
@J. Mastro Those are acoustic panels. You can find different models by googling "white geometric acoustic panels"
how long did the Linnmon desk last with the monitor arms before it broked?
I had it for about a year and a half with those two monitors
Is Autonomous in U.S ? With covid goin on if its out of country then might be hard to order and get it shipped on time. Love the setup.
I believe they have a warehouse here because I got my desk kit very fast!
Ordered the SmartDesk 2 just three weeks ago, and received it here in Japan two days ago. (01MAY21)
question, would the weight be able to support your PC on the table with everything on it right now?
Did you sand before applying the gel stain?
nope! you can sand it down if you want but mine came finished really well already so I didn't even bother
here's one thing we've learned today;
IKEA makes crap furniture
Sometimes, some of it is decent. Like the gerton top. Solid beech
Tbh you’re getting what you pay for. Some of the more expensive stuff is better quality.
What size drill bit did you use to pre drill the mounting holes?
I never pre drilled it! I just used the screws and drilled them in!
@@RAVisuals so they're self tapping screws?
Thank you. I'm wanting to do the same. Thing
@@Not_Lewis yep!! It was super easy. Just line it up and zip them in
@@RAVisuals thanks for the quick reply!
You didn't have to drill pilot holes for the screws correct?
No sir!
@@RAVisuals Right on, thanks!
What were the measurement of your countertop
I like this video but it mislead me big time. Because you mentioned Carlby as a second option, I took it as it was solid just like the Home Depot one. I drove 2 hours back and forth and got home the Carlby, which is actually particleboard. I wish I could've known better.
how long did the finishing process take overall?
Just a day or two so it could cure fully
When it is raised up does it rock back & forth or side to side?
not at all...this thing is freaking solid!
I don't know anything about wood, but aren't you supposed to apply conditioner, stain it, and then add clear coat onto the wood?
Not in this case. This countertop is pre-treated and just requires a stain to finish it!
Uh did you not finish the bottom underside of the butcher block? Always always always finish both sides at the same time (like ASAP) otherwise it WILL warp. Just a matter of time.
I think I spoke incorrectly in the video. The top I bought in fact IS finished. There just isn't any stain on it to really bring out the color. That's why the company sells it separately so you can get the look you want.
Why don’t you attached the outlet strip(s) to the bottom of the table, then add a single extension to that?
Hi ! What is your wallpaper ref ?
Its a program called "wallpaper engine"
NICE
Sick
Thank you!
Are you having any stability issues with the desk when it's at standing height? I've been reading mixed reviews and i'm thinking about getting this frame.
I’ve had zero issues. It’s great!
How long did you let the desk cure before using it?
It says to let it cure for 24 hours!
I hope you make more videos about Dell optiplex 9020
Might have to!
I was wondering if it can do a 8ft countertop
yes it can!
I will definitely buy one after Christmas!!!
What type of keyboard is that the Mini keyboard?
its a GK61!
Love this video
thanks dude!
Nice vid.
So you just stained the countertop and didn't apply any finish? I thought finish like poly or lacquer is required
Nope! This stain is a combo and doesn't require any! You're more than welcome to apply a finish but you don't have to
Any recommend legs besides alex draws?
How long did you let the stain sit?
It recommends at least 24 hours to let it sit
@@RAVisuals Thanks man, I bought the wrong thing. I bought gel stain not satin lol. But at least its a pretty stain, I just topped it with some poly and it looks pretty good.
Also, how do you feel with the 25 inches of width? Do you have enough room on the desk?
great
Great Job! Awesome content here. :)
Thanks so much!
watching it again lol love the new intro
You didn't finish the other side of your butcher block - major flaw. Over time unfinished side will soak up humidity more than the finished side causing warping.
Good point. I haven't experienced any warping though because in Washington we basically don't have humidity
I have an autonomous smart desk 2 with the xl top in all black. That I want to sell I just don't need it and moved to a sim rig
Nice! I'm actually really enjoying mine!
You should of gotten the karlby
I actually am glad I did this instead. Its extremely solid! Also the Karlby was sold out, lol
@@RAVisuals Only 5 in stock and bought it Sunday and order the same DIY Riser coming Wednesday I definitely need an upgraded desk.
is ur desk birch?
Hi
Hi
Did you….. actually use a phone case as a ‘barrier’ between the monitor arm and your ikea desk? My guy. Just no lmao.
It would’ve failed either way, but thats just ugly as well as doing literally nothing. Should’ve bought a set of those steel plates made to reinforce/spread out the load across a larger area. It’s what I’ve been using on my ikea desk for over a year without issue.
I do have a butcher block desk I’ve been meaning to set up for the last 6 months. Stained, polyurethane applied and even got the legs and inserts done (so I can disassemble countless times without affecting Integrity of the desk). Just need to do it lol
desperate time call for desperate measures man! It worked in the interim of me purchasing wand waiting for my butcher block to come in and all the time it took me to stain and assemble it. I just didn't want my monitors to fall on me while I was waiting for the replacement.
So yeah... he made a video about a desk... so yeah.. watch more videos.. so yeah
Karlby is not hardwood
It’s something more solid. I thought it was wood but might be something else. It’s not particle board at least 😂
