While listening to you as I drove, I made a detour to the library to pick up something by George Saunders, I never read anything by him. Thanks for the video.
I was supposed to be doing calculus all day today to prepare for an upcoming exam, but I picked up "A little life" and couldn't stop reading. I knew I should have, but good god the writing was beautiful. Oh and I've also been reading short stories recently, especially of the sci-fi horror genre, and there was one which was incredibly good, "Nightflyers" by GRRM. Can't put down a novel if it's any good, hence the short stories. But alas, now I have to stay up late making up for the damage done to my calculus skills. Also, what are your favourite short stories? Say, if you had to name the top three?
Haha I can relate to that. Hope you were able to catch up on calculus. I don't read much sci-fi, but I've liked some horror in the past. I'll look into Night flyers, especially if it's short. A favorite short story is tough, but I can give you three good ones: - "A Good Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor, - "Love and Honor and Pity and Pride and Compassion and Sacrifice" by Nam Le - "Barn Burning" by Haruki Murakami
Have you read Donna Tartt? The Secret History may be the most brilliant novel I’ve ever read. I’m half way through her other book, The Little Friend, though it’s not as good. Does Saunders only write short stories, I’d like to read one of his full length novels?
I haven't read any Donna Tart, though my dad liked both the Secret History and the Goldfinch. I've heard The Secret History is supposed to be great, I definitely need to add that to my list. As for Saunders, his most critically acclaimed work is a novel called Lincoln and the Bardo. It's supposed to be incredible and a quick read, though I haven't read it yet. He definitely leans more towards short stories in general though.

I really appreciate your honesty with your reviews. I'm sure the New York Times and others have their reasons for why a particular book is good, but that doesn't make your opinions and thoughts any less valuable :) so hearing about This Other Eden was really interesting! I haven't read any George Saunders yet, but again, just listening to those passages you read out has convinced me. Looking forward to your thoughts on Small Things Like These, as well as Foster whenever you end up reading that (both have a special place in my heart). I've got Walk the Blue Fields coming up soon, so yay for that. Also, well done for getting through all those flight difficulties and welcome back home! Thanks for sharing snippets of your study abroad journey. And hope the belated birthday celebration was fun. Would definitely be keen to hear your thoughts on the writing process and such. Love to hear that you’re in Chicago. I’m grateful to be attending college there, I think there’s definitely a deep literary history and movement in that city. Saunders is an example of this come to think of it, but so are Bellow and Wallace.
I would have to agree. I wish I was here more, I definitely didn't take advantage of that when I was in Chicago full-time, but I think it's a beautiful thing. Chicago is incredible. Side note, I'm taking a class this semester on Gwendolyn Brooks, who spent most of her life in Chicago. If we talk at all about literature in Chicago, I'll definitely bring it up on the channel.
