I bought this same bike a few weeks ago. Amazing power, comfort, performance. I considered and was about to buy a Road King, then I rode the Springfield Dark Horse. Not much comparison. Better handling, suspension and chassis. Ride and decide.

I bought this bike back in May, White Smoke. I have owned a Road Glide, Road King, and I can tell you, in my opinion Indian is far superior to the Harley. You just get more for your money. Plus there are just things I really like about what Indian does. Every Harley I bought right off the bat, you need to change all the lights out to LED, The Indian has it standard. The only thing I had to add was the LED Head lamp, Heel shifter, and TAB Performance Slip Ons. It sounds bigger and meaner than any Harley I ever had. Every Harley I had I could never get away with just slip ons. I had to do header pipes, tunes, bars, LED lighting. Lots of upgrades to get to where this bike is pretty much out of the box. Then you add remote locking bags, ride control, tire sensors, Mono adjustable air shock in the back, longer wheel base, which makes for a much more comfortable ride for the rider and passenger, and the 116 Thunder stroke is a beast! Also another issue I had with Harley was the backrest. I had a brand new Roadglide 2017. Bought a backrest and they claim its "quick release" I had to wedge it on the frame and was never able to get it off. It was so tight. The Indian goes on and off like butter and has the panels that click in when you aren't using it to give it a nice clean look. It takes a total of 10 seconds to remove and put on. Big brownie points for me there. I know it sounds like i'm dogging Harley, I'm really not. I think Harley makes a sweet bike, but after riding and purchasing an Indian, I don't see myself going back to Harley. I'm dug in and super happy with the Indian products I have owned. The are both American Companies so I'm supportive of both brands! If you want to hear my exhaust with just slip ons have a listen! ua-cam.com/video/dLklWu6fhdE/v-deo.html

Man, I really, REALLY wanted to love this bike but maybe I am too used to Harleys? I own a 2020 RKS and my bike felt more maneuverable, had a better throttle response and the paint just looks better overall. The throttle response was almost like my RKS in sport mode with the SDH but it felt so laggy in the other modes, maybe I had a bad test motorcycle? There is a lot of plastic that I am not used to seeing compared to a Harley as well.
However, I am interested in the years of your bikes because Harley has TPMS, and ride control technologies if you get the RDRS (C-ABS, ELB, C-ELB, C-TCS, DSCS, C-DSCS, VHC) which I think this bike doesn't even offer...or at least I did not get a chance to see it. I thought the suspension on the RKS was on-par with the SDH but maybe your bikes are older and are not a part of the new touring frame?
I will agree with the LED thing, I am not sure why Harley still does not put LEDs on the higher end bikes. The 2021 model of my bike comes with the daymaker LED headlight but I do not believe it is the adaptive model (boo). As far as making it loud I think you may be just a *bit* bias, lol, I have heard Harley's that sound like jet fighters taking off which I think just makes you look like a 16 year old girl looking for attention but to each his own. The new Harley's are quieter and the screaming eagle exhaust is quieter because big daddy gov't came down on harley for violating EPA standards. Do not worry, when Indian becomes more popular the EPA will take notice and will come down on Polaris just like they did on Harley.
I really wanted to love Indian so I could get rid of the Harley tax but IMO, their bikes are just not there yet. They are very close and I am not dogging Indian, I actually like their styling a LOT better than Harley's 2021 line up (seriously harley, WTF?) but the cost between this bike and my RKS is pennies on the dollar but I get more tech with my bike (optional RDRS package). Geeze, never thought I would say that about a Harley.

@@NeverDoubtMe23 I owned a 2012 Street Bob with the 96, 2012 Road King with 103, and a 2017 RG with a 107. Those bikes had full exhaust on them and didn't sound anything even close to my Springfield. The Street Bob sounded the best with the VH Short Shots and no baffles. I really didn't dig the 107 M8. I mean it's not like it was a bad bike but compared to my Springfield I could never justify buying another. I have since put a full tab performance exhaust on my Indian and it really is the best sounding bike I ever had. My buddy just got a 21 street glide. He had to jump through a bunch of hoops to get that thing sounding right, and he still doesn't have LED lights, power locking bags, and ride control. His bike was 25k. I think Indian has arrived. You get more bang for your buck, a better, more reliable product, plus you are buying from a company that actually has a clue about performance engines and how to build them. Harley's technology is dated and they just aren't keeping up. But I still love these two American Companies with all that said. I just prefer Indian.

Could you talk about the handlebars some more lol. But seriously, it's a great bike and my next bike. Pulling the trigger this week. Same color. I have the good fortune of living near Daytona and when the factory truck came to the speedway for Bike Week I rode every bagger Indian offers and this one was the clear winner. I don't want to be trapped behind a faring the rest of my life and I'm sick of listening to everyone's stereos. I personally want less motorcycle not more. This bike can easily be rigged out to do double duty as an in town cruiser and a long haul tourer. I've owned a Road King (2), Road Glide, Electra Glide Ultra Classic, GL1800 Goldwing, 4 Kawasaki's, a Suzuki M109 and a Vintage GL1100 naked Goldwing. To me this combines the best of all things. Ride quality, power, convenience & safety (cruise, ride modes, ABS etc.) a low seat height, and finally plenty of aftermarket support for accessories. Can't wait. I enjoyed my Harley's but every single one had some form of inherent engine defect meaning, HD knew it was an issue but sent the out to market anyway (think tc88 cm chain tensioners and TC96 compensator sprocket and wimpy weak clutch). No more. Indian puts out a practically bulletproof high quality product.

Dude, you are doing a pretty darn good review on the ride and handling. I been shopping for my next ride (a second stable horse).. I tried a 2011 Road King (seat sits too high and found the shake getting annoying) and a 2018 Chieftain 111 (poor brakes and power dropped around 80 mpr), and if these were all to have to offer at the time, I'd just shop for a old Roadstar and be happier with it..but since I already a have a Yamaha (Stratoliner), instead I just bought an 2010 Triumph Thunderbird 1600, 6 speed to tinker with.. Now it does remind me of a bulldog.. compact, and stout, and tight, and handles great. However with the 2020 Chieftain's having the 116, I might now have a reason to re-consider to to keep boredom from setting in. You have to give Indian credit for constantly making meaningful improvements, they are pushing their envelope with passion..

I think that I'm highly leaning towards either this bike or the standard Springfield as my next bike. Love the looks of it and every review I've sern gives it high marks. I'm just on the fence if I'd like the chieftain better, having the fairing would be nice or would it? Coming from a Victory Hammer I've only ridden a fairing bike once, a 2018 street glide special demo event, and it was ok but didn't really get the miles in to see if I'd appreciate the fairing or regret it. I guess that's why right now Im leaning towards the Springfield as the removable windshield is a nice option.

    • @RabidHedgehog
      @RabidHedgehog  3 роки тому +1

I have come to an appreciation of fairings as of recent. I will say that because I have windshieldless machines in the garage and a fully faired machine that I can just move back and forth depending on the day and how I am feeling. Having the ability to detach was a nice touch to have when I had the America LT and the Sportster 1200T. Windshields are also lighter on the bars and not as busy, but provide adequate wind protection on those longer rides to aid in lessoning fatigue. So I would say test ride both back to back to back and see which fits you best. I would get any of them to be honest.

I've got the 2020 chieftain. Tested harley, kawasaki and then indian. Indian won hands down. The ONLY, and I mean ONLY "complaint" I have about the bike is... it looks and "feels" like plastic (which it is). The bike is AMAZING. Power, performance, comfort, controls... but I just cant get over the plastic-y feeling of the bags and the fender.... my GOSH give me a hardened aluminum option and I'd GLADLY pay for it... I don't care about the extra 5-8lbs this will add to the bike.
I LOATHE the look and feel of plastics.

Those two CHROME screws on the top of the headlight are a real distraction! Why would they not make them blend into the headlight? Other than that, this bike looks awesome. I’d probably add some lowers to protect my knees as well as a small windshield (like Harleys split smoked windshield) for those long rides.

Springfield had always the same rake like Chieftain/ Roadmaster, 25 Degr. Chiefs and Vintage Model had till 2020 a different rake: 28 Degr. Since 2020 all models have same 25 Degr.. So, better Low Speed Handling.

Thanks 🙏🏼 I did not know that I favor the Springfield over the Vintage because of the rake difference this changes everything now.

That opening drive by clip... Can you believe it? A motorcycle that has a real overdrive? The engine barely sounds like it's ticking over above an idle as it's flying by at 65 mph... Imagine if the Japanese had geared their motorcycles like that? Is Indian the only brand on Earth right now that has proper gear ratios on a motorcycle? Based on that clip, I want an Indian motorcycle. There's nothing more relaxing and soothing than a low RPM engine at high speeds.

  • @plumbusman

Thought the Springfield was designed with a tighter triangle, less rake?? And ive test ridden the original versions of darkhorse (chief platform) and Springfield... the Springfield was able to turn on a dime. Very nimble. Maybe mini apes caused different handling?

Springfield is about an inch longer in length and the seat is an inch taller as well than the Chieftain. Wheel base is 67 inches as well vs. 65.7. It's subtle, but somewhat there.

Ride is better for dang sure. Hardware rubbing is going to happen, not as fast as a Breakout, cause that thing hits fast, but going to happen. The Challenger in a bagger is about the only one that will not scrape as much as say the Springfield or Chieftain, but it'll still hit a floorboard.

That colour is beautiful! I'd love to see that colour on the 2021 Chieftain darkhorse. I'd also be interested to know if the 108 is coming to the Springfield/Chieftain lineup? The thunderstroke is a nice motor with lots of torque and a good sound but some riders just want that power the 108 offers.
