New Caledonia Popping and Jigging - 2014

  • In September of 2014, Sami traveled with Dorian, George and Arthur to New Caledonia to fish with Powercat Charters,
For 5 days the crew popped and jigged, with the main targets being dogtooth tuna and giant trevally.
Sami: "To sum this trip up and give its fairness - I must say that we encountered one of the best Dogtooth tuna bites ever!
Defeated would be an understatement to what we saw and ran into at that part of the world. The highlight is that so far I’m booking 2 trips for 2015 season and 2016."

To all the people who somehow think they know better than these guys, Dog Tooth tuna is a different beast in the Pacific islands. They chew through 300lb wire like it's 4lb mono. They also run in that deep water straight down and then out so you've got hundreds of yards out before you have any chance. This isn't live bait and an 80W, this is Stella 20k's getting rocked.

Awesome video guys!!! Obviously lots of people on here who know nothing about the vast array of fisheries we have. Tackle and technique required for a species can vary greatly, simply by moving to the other side of a lake, bay, shelf, etc.... The amount of uneducated comments, is amazing. We all love to fish people!!! Read a little, use google, before you open your mouth about something you know nothing about and clearly do not understand.

It never ceases to amaze me how people who know the least yell the loudest. There are so many comments on here from people who know nothing about the type of fishery they are looking at, or any of the skill involved.
Forget what you think you know about fishing. These guys fish in a different world. 80lb spin tackle, 40 lbs of drag, 100-200lb leader, and they are UNDER-gunned.
Doggies and GT are some of the strongest fish that swim, bar none. They live in and around sharp rocks and drop offs. If the fish get back to cover, they will break you off. If the fish run to deep water and drag your line on a ledge, they will break you off. If the numerous sharks get to your fish, they will attack it, hit your line, and break you off. You have to somehow find a way to stop all these things from happening without snapping your line, straightening your hook, or breaking your rod. You hook up, gun the boat to deep water, and pray.
Success rate against small Doggies while jigging is, on a good day, 20% per hookup. These guys are hooking in to big boys; fish-of-a-lifetime size. The fact that they landed anything at all is testament to the combined skills of angler and captain.
Don't believe me? I wasn't so sure either, so I went over to Melanesia and tried it for myself. If you can, save up for a trip to one of these places. It's worth every penny. It will change you. If you can't, sit back, dream, and keep your ill-formed opinions to yourself.

Sami, you are the best, I lean a lot to improuve my fishing technique in New Caledonia by watching you videos / doog tooth tuna is still the most difficult fish to catch (power and speed of fish, reef cutting and teeth cutting also).

I saw a comment on all the 'jerking' of the rods. This is called Speed Jigging. I suggest you try it. It might look stupid, but the fish can't resist a popping, fluttering bait. It's a lot of work, but it's worth the effort.

  • @SkwidyFishing
    @SkwidyFishing 9 років тому +8

To all people being butthurt: if you haven't noticed the fish are running to the bottom and breaking off on the reef. The rods can handle marlin. The line will be braid over 80lb and they are using wire trace and still being busted off. They are motoring away in an attempt to get to deeper water where the fish can be landed. Go try and catch a dogtooth tuna sometime, show some respect these guys will have been chartering longer than you have ever fished.

Pretty sure lot of guys never land Doggy-Tuna in south pacific.
The island ocean structure and sharks make it very hard to bring it back to the surface.
Myself and some friends are stocking minimum 20 jiggs for 5 days for Mangareva, Rikitea :)
And we are not even sure it will be enough!

The only thing wrong with this vid and the boys fishing in it , is the absolutely brainless comments of stillwater , guppy fishermen who have never been to the tropics, never felt 25kgs of drag , never hooked anything bigger than there own purses , and have never fished in shark infested waters.
Good job boys , you had fun , got a few , lost a few, had your arms stretched and no doubt had some cold cold beers after a hard day jigging.

Richard Crowe I've used both.....you can work the rail better with conventional, but you rarely get a birdsnest with a spinning reel. I've caught 30 lb yellowtail and 35lb tuna on my Penn Spinfisher V 10500 ...pretty rugged for the price.

Why on earth was the boat moving that fast in the opposite direction of the fish while you had guys fighting fish. I understand if your trolling and you hook up at a steady speed but the only time you need to be running the boat like that is if your chasing the fish down, usually that only happens when the fish is in danger of spooling you out of line. I'm no charter captain and I know that. It even looks like at 2:28 the prop cuts the fish off. Not to mention all the insane jerking, what were you doing mid fight resetting the hook or something? Then the guy comes up in the middle of a nice fight where it looks like things are going moderately well, see's the drag working as it should be spooling out line to work the fish to a tired state as it is designed to do and so he tightens the drag thus allowing the fish to pop off the line, I dare to question the knots here lol. Man I'd ask for a refund, this charter looks like it had no clue what it was doing, if it wasn't intentionally setting up its customers for failure. Thanks for this informative video I would consider changing the name of your Charter company after see this video. Unless of course this was some trick and you guys used your competitions Charters as the name of the charter lol.

Have you ever fished for Dogtooth tuna?
we are fighting the terrain which is very harsh and the fish are running to the reef and drop off to cut us and we are dealing with the shark which they are feasting on our fish after the hook up, I hope you get the idea...

Those big Steĺlas put out 25kg plus drag and they are locked up. I take it those rods are at least 450-500gm rods and you still couldnt stop them!!. Monster dogtooth are dirty fighters and very powerfull. There have been some silly comments by people who have no idea and it really shows the ignorance. I guess a new spot may be the only way to possably beat these monsters. Motoring away from the reef is the only answer. We do the same with 40kg kingfish here in NZ. These boys don't know how to fish, you don't set the drag so hard that all your lines are snapping, see yr rods and reel PE, you have to fight the fishes not winch them up and yr boat should not be on the move and so fast…..watch the jigging master from Taiwan …. shame so many fails n all snapping within few minutes upon hooked up

The guy at 9:30 might be the worst fisherman i have ever even seen try to fish. Yanking like that, are you fucking serious. Then bitches about losing him after he rips the fishes jaw out.

the fish did not get its jaw ripped out. if you knew anything it would have bitten through the trace or gone round the reef. stop bitching its a video
