    As much as I love the ever-charming Darling and his killer dance moves, I have to say, Emily is the better scientist. She doesn’t let anything faze her! Excited to see how her relationship with Jesse grows in Control 2!

      @GamingUniversityUoG  Рік тому +33

      Darling is great. Emily is amazing too. Darling is probably still the better boss only because he has more charisma. Emily is kind of stand offish to everyone except Jessie. As a researcher she is better though.

      @@GamingUniversityUoGoh definitely. Part of being a leader is having enough charisma that people will follow and respect you. So far, Jesse’s doing alright with rallying the Bureau under threat of death, but it’s anyone’s guess if she’ll be able to keep them together without an enemy to fight. I’d actually put my money on Arish helping them with the charisma aspect, he’s a guy anyone could get along with and he’s got experience actually working with people.

      Emily does seem like she'd poke something you really, really shouldn't poke with a stick to see what it did, though. Darling would make sure to put it in another dimension first..

    You mentioned early in the video how Pope was held back from researching some of the more interesting (read: dangerous) subjects at the FBC. One of the things I find so interesting there is the way the game's characterization of its major players changes over time. For example, Darling's siloing of information is first made to appear as if it could be a sign of his betrayal of the FBC and of humanity. There are elements that make it seem like he might be a villain. And after having been made to like Pope as a character, the steady reveals that Darling even kept stuff from her make it seem like -- Yeah, he might be a bad guy. But then we come to learn that actually Darling held her back because he knew that, given the chance to investigate some of this stuff, she would throw herself whole-heartedly into the work, perhaps putting herself at far greater risk. You come to realize that his unwillingness to let her participate in Dimensional Research, for example, is possibly the very highest endorsement of her talent, abilities, and character. The other people he took with him were, in a way, expendable. But he wasn't willing to put her at risk by letting her be a part of it.

    • @GamingUniversityUoG
      @GamingUniversityUoG  10 місяців тому +19

      Goes to know one amazing characterization for him too. Since he dived into it head first as well. He valued her presence there greater than his own. Risking himself was more tolerable than risking her.

    Emily is definitely one of my favorites from the Bureau and I would have loved to see her and Darling actually interact. Sort of two ways of scientific thinking clashing, but both still having lots of passion behind them as well. I'm also really looking forward to Control 2 and how her role as Head of Research grows... given that this position and the Director seemingly get into conflict very often.

    I always enjoy your use of games to explain rather abstract concepts. Informative and educational.

    About hearsay: it's worth noting that there's still significant value in listening to and building off of previous work. Even Darling's fallacious conclusions come from valuable data (e.g. the involvement of the board with most OoPs in the Oldest House), and can provide insight. This is why it's important to delimit hypotheses, verified conclusions, and hard data.
    If we really couldn't trust in the work and claims of others, then we'd barely had made any scientific advancements at all, since every scientist would be stuck double-checking the most fundamental laws! Second-hand information is still very valuable, because the cumulative time and effort that everybody else has to consider a problem utterly dwarfs your own. What's important is that it justifies itself, and provides reasons for its conclusions.
    For example, every observed OoP is connected to the Board, so the Board is intrinsically connected to every OoP; but the premise isn't actually true, because there are OoPs unrelated to the board, so the conclusion may be false, even if the argument itself isn't unreasonable. And while it's true that a notion like "the Board controls the OoPs" can't be verified as fact, it *can* be falsified, so it's still scientifically meaningful to posit and discuss.

    Loved the video about my favorite character. I wonder how far Emily is willing to go to learn. The reason I ask is that a redditor was talking ages ago about the "Hotline Security Log" collectible. There is an entry that a "Carol Bishop" entered the Hotline chamber as an assistant janitor. May or may not have been Emily, but she only went in once. If it was her, did she actually lift the receiver?

    This video can be summed up with a simple phrase, "If you always want to be right, you must be willing to change your opinion based on new information". I do not take credit for that one but, I do have this saying of my own that I used to tell my students, "Your license, is a license to learn. Coming out of school, you know nothing. Remember that when someone tells you something new, the first question you should them, and yourself, is: Why?" I had students that studied the book and could give a text book answer but, they couldn't explain the answer because they didn't know "why", they gleaned the knowledge but not the understanding, and thus they did not grok what they had recited from the book. I would go on to tell them, "I will give you the benefit of my knowledge and wisdom and will relay to you as much as I can but, I don't know what you don't know unless you ask questions. I can explain it to you but I can not understand it for you, so you'd better ask questions if not of me, then of those around you who do understand it." The biggest stumbling block for a lot of them was visualizing how a collapsing magnetic field could impart an electrical charge in a coil. I could lecture on it, draw pictures, show videos, and have them conduct practical exercises to demonstrate to themselves that it worked but I could not understand it for them, but man you could see the eyes light up on some faces when it finally clicked, and they finally "groked" what they had been told.

      Since by the sounds of it you're in the educational field, I would like to get your opinion on something. Going through school it always felt as though the 'goal' was simply to get a good grade and pass. Not to fully understand or appreciate what was being taught. It wasn't until I graduated that I truly began to appreciate a lot of what I took for granted. The 'grok' aspect of learning is the best part. Otherwise we'd get the A and then forget it the following week.

      @@GamingUniversityUoG Sadly that is the way it is these days. The "No Child Left Behind" thing really killed public education. I worked as an instructor for Airframe and Power Plant mechanics(A&P). Some were perfectly able to memorize the study guides, and lecture notes, and could easily answer the test questions, however, when the time came for the practical side of things (taking apart an engine for example), these same individuals were lost because they had not taken the time to understand what they were memorizing. For others, the opposite was true, you could give them toolbox and a manual, they could tear the engine apart and rebuild it quickly, and understood the mechanics behind it, but not how it would work. For example, you could ask them what the 5 events were in a 4-stroke engine, and they just could not wrap their heads around the fact that "ignition" was an event between compression stoke and just before power stroke. There were a few that would be great in the theory side of things and only lacked the hands-on experience, and they would quickly grasp the mechanical side of things quickly (doesn't take much to turn a wrench the most power aircraft tool is the one between your ears), and these were the ones that would become expert troubleshooters and inspection authorities later in their careers. Why? Because they groked the whole situation. They could "see" things in their minds and take apart and troubleshoot something without lifting a wrench or screwdriver because they could see it all in their heads. People wonder why specialists develop like they do but every industry has them. Why? Because there is too much to know in any field to know everything. I might be an A&P with a good working knowledge of all aircraft but I specialize in helicopters, and can look at a manual and rotorhead system and take it apart in my head before I ever lift a wrench same with turbine engines but, I taught Internal Combustion Theory, as well as Sheetmetal, Wood and Composite Structures. Sheetmetal work is an art(sure there ARE formulas to calculate bends)and requires a deft hand and good control of tools to prevent damage to what you are working on. Some of those students that didn't grok engines, were artists with a piece of aluminum or making things from fiberglass. "If you measure a fishes intelligence by it's ability to climb a tree, it will forever be thought of as inferior" - A. Einestein.

The clear exasperation with her colleagues who discounted it as nonsense was something I really vibed with, as at the time my friends were mostly liberals and the Trump administration was in full force. Everyone was acting like Trump’s ramblings weren’t worth listening to, they were nonsense from a senile idiot except when they were explicitly hateful. I strongly believed and continue to believe that Trump’s rhetoric is intentional, tactical and interesting; he casts a strong spell on his followers while enraging his opponents. It’s an incantation of a sort, and analyzing how he speaks and how it affects those who hear him is a worthwhile pursuit, just from a basic sociolinguistic perspective, because it’s objective fact that his speeches provoke strong, statistically significant emotional response.
    Emily’s obvious passion for the pursuit of understanding and the fact that she perseveres in her analysis despite others on her “side” mocking or discouraging her attempt made me trust her completely, and I was super glad there wasn’t a twist betrayal of some kind.

    I don't know about everyone else, but whenever my personal truth is conclusively proven false, I rejoice over having learned and moved past a lesser "truth", approaching one that is more accurate to reality, thereby increasing my understanding and lessening or even eliminating feelings of doubt.
    Only someone overly invested in an idea, whether because they profit from its continued existence or they have an emotional connection to it (such as pride, hope or fear), would despair if unable to legitimately and conclusively assert their own truth over all others.
    Of course, there are also the ignorant ones who hear inspirational words that resonate with their held beliefs, and rather than evaluating the validity of the statements, they instead stop asking questions, letting someone else think for them, and resign themselves to becoming mere relays for those ideas, even if the ideas have inconsistencies and holes the size of the Yucatan Crater in their logic that outside observers notice almost immediately, and despite their insistence that they are confident that they are right and proof if everywhere, they refuse to engage in discussions in front of an audience unless it's on their home turf, where they have complete control over the outflow of information and can freely pressure, humiliate, shame or slander the guest to their face in front of a biased audience who has their backs.
    Kinda like Socialdemokraterna (the Social Democrat Party, or if they had chosen a more honest name; the "Champagne Socialist Party") here in Sweden actually.
    Their failings in office aside, they have shown their poor character and lack of earnestness by repeatedly refusing to talk, even casually or even be in the same makeup lounge as members of other parties before a debate, only answering questions from journalists who support them and won't ask them any challenging questions, and tend to make divisive statements only when there's either no-one around who would contest them, or if the event doesn't have a Q&A segment to begin with...
    They did support Hitler's cause during the world wars after all, so I guess it's no wonder they would see non-allies as below themselves, not even worthy of being recognised as competition.
    **Edit**
    Yeah, I realise that I derailed into politics at the end.
    It's election year this year, and I'm excited that it looks like Socialdemokraterna might finally lose, due to the multitude of small radical parties they have always allied with in order to gain majority having lost much of the support they have had in the past as the approaching economic crisis has caused more people to actually look at the traffic before they cross the road.
    Feel-good propaganda and exploitation of the people's good will won't have the same effect if there's a risk of lowered standards of living and a collapse of medical services and welfare.
    Basically, when the shit hits the fan, wokeness goes out the window, as people either stop obsessing over abstract non-issues and start focusing on reality, or they perish due to their privileged existences up until then having left them unprepared to handle real problems.

    Ignorance is not what your referring to in my opinion ignorance is the person knowing that it is not real and not caring if it is they flat out don't care and don't what to hear it because it conflicts with your believe now that is ignorance.
    But some not knowing anything at all your going on about is lack of knowing you can't be ignorant about something you don't know anything about and when you do then you can chose to be ignorant of it or not interested in it.
    Not being interested is not ignoring it you just don't want to know but may get back to it if you feel like it ignoring it flat out and not caring at all because it goes against what you believe now that's ignorant.

From the model presented, this is basically someone who is so comfortable in their ignorance they fight to remain there. Think Cypher from the Matrix. He wishes to return to ignorance.

In fact, it seems more likely that this was the act of Polaris, the Hadron Resonance Symbiont living in Jesse's head but, because the two are effectively one merged person, Emily 'heard' this summons in Jesse's voice, someone she reflexively trusts and admires and this convincing her that Jesse had summoned her and take prompt action.

    My major 'conflicting' thought, and something which I hold as a universal truth by your reasoning, is that objectivity is unobtainable by humanity. Even empiricism is simply the collective agreement of multiple subjective interpretations of inherently limited datasets. There are no 'facts' in the first place, save the fact of our limitation as 3/4/5th dimensional perspectives, merely our current understanding of what is considered true. Meaning and factual truths are inherently biased and lacking even through the collection methods we use - no matter what we do, our 'grok' of a subject is, at best, incomplete.
