  • In this video I paddle the tidal estuary of the River Dart in my homebuilt cedar strip open canoe. Join me as I paddle downstream from Stoke Gabriel to Dartmouth, then use the incoming tide to travel upstream to Totnes and then back to Stoke Gabriel again. Some paddle Simon well done. I have an Atlantic Feelfree closed top kayak. Done the Dart twice it's a beautiful river and somehow kind of mysterious. Remember getting near to Stoke Gabriel from Totnes and hearing an occasional coughing sound 7am in the morning mist with overcast steely grey sky and small chop making me feel uneasy. Another cough really close to my kayak then suddenly a seal surfaced near my bow and dived. What a relief.

    The original Cornish pasties were larger and in one end there was meat and potato and in the other apple. Favoured by miner's the pasty was taken down the pits all over the British isles.

    At the end you said you had 700 subscribers, now your near almost 30,000. That's an increase, congratulations. I've only got a few left to watch and will be waiting on more. I went out and got myself a low cost kayak since I miss being on the water. I went out Saturday and wore myself out back and forth five times on a lake. First time in a kayak. But watching you in the canoe again seems like I should have waited to get a solo canoe. Kayaks and canoes just are not the same. I still fear tipping upon getting out. I'm not steady since I have a right ankle disability. I enjoy watching your videos to see areas that I would never get to since I live in the USA. Thank you for continuing with the videos.

    • @simonablokeinthewoods

      Whatever the boat, it’ll still get you out onto the water and that’s the main thing - water has a way of slowing down the pace of life, and you notice so much more! I’m sure you’ll get used to it - the getting in and out. Happy paddling! 😁🛶

    Sweet trip. I just went 40 miles on the Kentucky river. It sucked. Steep mud banks to climb just to camp, we had to portage around 2 locks. We decided to cut the trip short and paddle 20 miles the last day. Never again. My next trip will definitely be a lake with established beaches.

    Simon really nice canoe and enjoyed the ride, also to help with the trim in the wind I fill 2 dry bags with water and put them in the front to keep the bow down, also I find it better to sit in front of the front seat looking towards the rear seat.

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  6 років тому

      Cheers ! Great tip for trimming the canoe! I do just as you suggested, sit in the front seat facing the back, it’s not perfect, I’d rather be more central, but it’ll do until I pull my finger out and make the kneeling thwart I’ve been promising myself for the last three years haha! Glad you enjoyed the paddle! Atb, Simon

    Lovely film, Simon, thank you. As a student at Dartington College of Arts in the late 70s I lived briefly in the Sharpham Boathouse, featured from 12:40. We were two couples sharing the (tiny) white house whilst the poet Brian Pattern lived in the wooden shed (as he called it). We frequently ate breakfast on the terrace, as often as not watching the antics of a pair of otters who lived in the bank to the right of the picture. Totnes and Dartmouth were favourite haunts, Dittisham, too.

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  6 років тому

      Wow - what a place to live - much preferred the boathouse to the big house haha! Idyllic. We had a lovely evening out in Totnes during our stay - found a nice place to quench our thirsts after scaling the hill! Thanks for watching and glad to have brought back some memories! Atb, Simon.

    Ive paddled this river a few times both lower and upper Dart in an open canoe - I don't think i would risk your wooden boat on the upper Dart. If you are ever in West Wales, The Milford Estuary, especially upstream from the Cleddau Bridge is worth a few days with some discreet wild camping.

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  5 років тому

      Thank you Cyndi! I did wonder about the upper Dart. The canoe is a lot tougher than it looks - reinforced fibreglass hull - really designed for big rocky rivers, but I’m still cautious with it hahaha!
      I’ll check out the Milford Estuary - thank you! Always looking for new places to paddle!
      Cheers, Simon

    Hi looks really great, I personally love the sound of the paddle going through water. One thing I would say is that you don't seem to 'edge' the boat very much when paddling, is this your style? Or do you not find it helpful, or is it not necessary when you are paddling your boat? I personally find it helpful in many ways. Cheers great video btw

      Thank you! The bucket is my bailer, it’s just a cheap paint kettle, but if the canoe gets swamped, or I capsize, I can bail out quickly with it - it has a big sponge in it too to mop up the dregs! Cheers, Simon.
