I love this Watson much better than when portrayed as a bumbling fool. This one is a real military man, who is not afraid of action. And he is no fool even though he isn't quite sure what Holmes is usually up to.Howard Marion-Crawford does a great job with the role.
He play Watson so well, its a shame that he had such a terrible ending to his life. Bad health, then alcohol and then took sleeping pills while using alcohol. Ruled accidental but it is very sad he ended up in a miserable situation. He is so alive in these episodes.
Yeah thats a very good description of Book Watson. He could be closer to Sherlock as a Friend, like the other one, and isnt much of a Womanizer it seemns, but hes quiet good. The Rathborn one is more like Hastings from the Poirot books.
@Mary Smit I know hes the Comedic Sidekick, and thats fine, its just a little sad, cause book Watson was pretty good, and the Movies of that Time established the Comedic Idiot Watson.
I love this series. Too short so I've had to watch it several times over. I like the light humour and the actors are excellent, IMO. Leslie Howard fans are also pleased to see his son's work, no doubt, as am I.
It is so nice to be able to understand each word spoken. These days it is all mumbling, jumbling mouths filled with marshmallows supported by plastic bodies and no story plots.
A very good episode of "Sherlock Holmes" with H. Marion Crawford and Ronald Howard. It is interesting how much of a plot can be integrated into a 25 to 26 minute show.
I will always see Basil Rathbone in the role of Holmes but I enjoyed this one to. I enjoy Sherlock Holmes stories no matter who plays him!😂 Thanks for posting this video!❤️
I discovered this series about 14 years ago, when I bought a cheap DVD collection (not digitally remastered) of twenty episodes in England. I had never heard of this series. I am 65, but this series, despite using mostly English actors, was never broadcast in the UK!
I am of the same age as yourself, and only recently came across them. They are not Basil Rathbone movie quality, but I do prefer to watch these than the nonsense that is out there today.
I also like this version of inspector LeStrade. He played Little John in the Robin Hood TV series, and the SH episode of the league of red headed men had Friar Tuck from the RH series. I loved the Robin Hood TV series with Richard Greene when I was a kid.
Sherlock in less than 30mins. Purely nice for the old telly I grew up with & to be frank I prefer it to today's 4k HD & the rest. This period is evocative of a telly age thankfully I can watch on Ye Olde UA-cam.
Watson is always outraged by the eccentric behavior of his roommate. "Really Holmes, must you fire that crossbow and nearly make me die an agonizing death?" Holmes: "Whoops !"
Absolutely wonderful I to am binging for the third time I agree I wish they had made more great stories clean language a time when families could watch together I will be following you guys for ever more keep up this wonderful viewing experience the old stuff is the best
A BIG thank you to all the frontliners worldwide. God be with us all during this difficult time. May 22. 2 months and 4 days under lockdown. Thanks UA-cam for the free first class old mysteries! Old is gold!
@@PizzaFLIX I should be the one thanking you PizzaFlix! I just watched it again! I'm watching all the 39 videos. I just came across it today. Lockdown? So what? I have your videos to keep me entertained!🍻👍
This is a great series, good warm characters. Sgt Wilkins is my favorite. I would liked to have known him. Watson is a strong character here. He has a punch like Mike Tyson!
Er, well, if you actually look at the clothing of the brother he is wearing Edwardian attire. The same style that the Teddy boys would bring back into fashion in later years, hence the name. So perhaps not such a prop blooper!
The actors in this show are just amazing! They are real professionals, who used to play in the theater, - also in classic dramas & tragedies, I belive, - so their performance is absolutely excellent! And it helps to create a proper Victorian atmosphere in this episode, because Victiorans were very fond of supernatural!
@@DAVYMAC I have also found another movie, obviously made by theatrical professionals,- "A Nero Wolfe Mysteries" (A&E Series), which I enjoy immensely!
Watching during the Covid19 Lockdown in Malaysia. I prefer watching Watson than reading about him! He's so amusing! My favourite crime buster since the early 80's! I saved my pocket money to buy his books!
My reason to watch tv series is that I enjoy discovering how an actor may appear in different productions and I’m so greatly surprised when this happens, in this episode the policeman looks like the actor who plays the role of Higgins in Magnum p.i; Holmes 1954, magnum 1984, 30 years after, I’m not sure but I think that he is. Greetings from Bogotá in the lockdown.
How do you do? No how do you do ? No no how do you do? I love these old stories im an American I wonder was it really like this in this era , the polite formalities?
Well, the correct response to "How do you do?" used to be (and still is, in refined circles) a reply in the same vein. Nowadays, though, people take the question literally and are apt to respond, "Very well, thanks!... and you?" or something similar. Times change; habits evolve. I suppose the old way of simply answering one question with the same question was rather daft, if you think about it.
@@kh23797 ..hmmm. I always consider "How do you do" similar to "How are you doing?"..."Thanks for asking. I am just fine. How are YOU doing". .... If ya don't want all that banter, two people can merely exchange "Howdy"s.
"How do you do?" in this context really functions as "Hello!" So the proper reply is to say Hello back, i.e., "How do you do?" It has nothing to do with health.
Ronald Howard was a warm and charming Holmes, unlike the cold character of the original stories. The purists must be outraged, but he is just the sort of fellow I would love to drink with at a bar. Shame his real life father was in a plane shot down by the loathsome Nazis. I like to imagine the old boy looking down from Heaven and beaming with pride at his son.
@@UkOutreach and the difference is ? To be ether a civilian worker or in the German military you had to be a Nazi party member. No membership no work therefore he was shot down by a NAZI!
@@lordeden2732 You will find that is not true. As a matter of fact Adolf Hitler's own valet and personal security guard was not a member of the NSDAP party.
@@lordeden2732 This is incorrect. The NAZI party did not want to be watered down by including everyone. Only the extreme higher ups in the Military joined the party. The Luftwaffe were excellent fliers and fighters. Not NAZIs
Ronald Howard is up there with Basil Rathbone as the best Sherlock Holmes , giving the character a more warm & easy going vibe which is refreshing. Jeremy Brett always seemed much too serious and looked like he had a baton stuck up his arse.
Ronald Howard was a fine actor. Who ever said he lacked star quality was truly mistaken. Any actor or anyone associated with theatre of films etc makes a great mistake in expecting or requiring an actor or actress to be the remake of their father or mother or anyone else does folly indeed.
I would really like to know more about the actress, "Karen" who played Peg Hall, Harvey Winthrop's fiancee'. No last name indicated in the credits and no results doing an internet search. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing these gems with us!💛
I went to IMDb, who's never let me down, until now. According to that source, her entire bio was this "Karen is an actress, known for Sherlock Holmes (1954)." and her entire filmography "Sherlock Holmes (TV Series) Peg Hall - The Case of the Winthrop Legend (1954) ... Peg Hall" Nothing else.
i never knew these existed, these are great. Most of the time the old ones ARE the BEST , the new ones just can't compare, although I really like the Sherlock Homes w/ Jermy Brent ( I think that is his name) that was from the 80's i believe, the rest of the newer ones leave alot to be desired. Ivan Desny (the younger brother) was a very well-known and famous actor in Germany. To discover him here and to hear him speak such perfect English is one of the biggest surprises for me in recent years. Ivan Desny was a French-German actor of Russian-Swedish origin who played in an English series and spoke the language fluently. Now that's what I call international. He must have been a true multi-talent. All respect! Oh, yes, he was born in Beijing (China) and died in Switzerland. He spent his early youth in Tehran, Washington, D. C., Paris and Brisbane (Australia).
And a very rare appearance of Ivan Desny, speaking English. He normally played only in French and German movies. Interesting man, Russian, born in Beijing in the 1920s...
There is still the unanswered question at the end as to whether the blind woman murdered the lady and of she was really blind. Not a good ending of the show at all. Too many loose ends.
i like that.. it has power, i think that s part of what makes it very watchable.. i must confess that i start sleeping in some of the other holmes series, but. not this one... that and solving many problems in 26 minutes ! lol
They're probably philanthropic film critics who hate to see us easily amused viewers waste our worthless time as much as they whose time is invaluable . With such abundance of generous souls, there's still hope everything pre dating last week gets funnelled down a memory hole!
It would be gratifying if Holmes were to actually PREVENT a murder from being committed. I don't think he has ever managed to pull that off. Of course, once the killer has struck he/she cannot hope to evade the good detective's clutches... but it would be nice if Holmes could save a life just once :-( xxx
Didn't that police Bobby remind you of john hillerman of Magnum PI fame? Great show. For me, these were the best actors that played sherlock and watson!! Not such a bumbling watson. And Sherlock was likeable. They both were. Maybe that goes against what the original writings were but I don't care about that. I like these characters. 😃 Thanks for the upload!!🙏
I love the respect and manners that were common then. May I introduce my colleague, Dr. Watson. We don't speak like that (with great respect) today. If we did, society would be much nicer.
Did Howard Marion-Crawford usually get credited as H. Marion-Crawford, or was it only in these, to play down the other lead being surnamed Howard? And yes, Marion-Crawford's affability and likeability did so much to make these super enjoyable, and to make us overlook so many foibles. In this one, other than the widow, how many of the characters were found smiling carelessly with the innocent man's still-warm body nearly at their feet?
Seven errors in your grammar. Sentence must begin with a capital letter. There, not their. Grammar, not grammer. Coma must be immediately after the word and spaced before next word. The word without is not to be spaced. A period is missing at the end of the sentence.

OK, I am not sure of the ending. WAS the blind woman really their and pushed the girl out of revenge or was it in, in a sense the legend proving itself true?
@@genkatqltr737 Well, I all along thought that she was faking her blindness, so she concocted this whole thing and framed the fiancee and then pushes her down the steps. So now she ends up with the man she truly loves and the fortune to boot with no suspicion on herself. Now she will miraculously regain her sight after the marriage.
You’ll notice the policeman at the very beginning in the opening credits as they yell action he’s standing still for a moment until they yell action and then he starts moving very unnatural. He should have been walking as the scene opened you’ll also notice as Holmes and Watson are walking down the sidewalk they come to the white cobblestone at the edge of the sidewalk, which is their their mark to step into the street.
Sherlock totally missed the 👻 Sheldon Reynolds was only 31 himself when he made the series. He chose to portray a young and inexperienced Sherlock, yet human and fun.
I really like this series, although this is one of the weaker episodes. Nevertheless thanks for posting, PizzaFlix. P.S. I think One Step Beyond is a great series too.

@@ardithmckeaigg548 I think I do too. They are lovable, each radiant in his own way. Interesting that Holmes works so well with lightness and grace.

So many "how do you do" ¡!
Besides that, it's so addictive and all the mannerisms and details etc.
Classic and class.
I grew up with Basil Rathbone ,then. Jeremy Britt. But I like this one too. You can pack a lot of story in one half hour
They usually pick a lot of good Actors for that Role. I feel you find more good then bad ones.

"Really Holmes, must you fire that crossbow and nearly make me die an agonizing death?"
Holmes: "Whoops !"
Nice! How about 17:45 "Holmes, really. I don't know...what on earth do you think you're doing?"

Major prop blooper!
Look at the coin in Watson's hand at 15:07. It bears the head of George V (1911 to 1935). But the episode is set in the 1890s!
Who are you sherlock Holmes?

Er, well, if you actually look at the clothing of the brother he is wearing Edwardian attire. The same style that the Teddy boys would bring back into fashion in later years, hence the name. So perhaps not such a prop blooper!

The actors in this show are just amazing! They are real professionals, who used to play in the theater, - also in classic dramas & tragedies, I belive, - so their performance is absolutely excellent! And it helps to create a proper Victorian atmosphere in this episode, because Victiorans were very fond of supernatural!

Ron Howard and Jeremy Brett are my 2 favorite Holmes. Their Dr. Watson's are perfect. One is fun, the other real serious; but both are very good.

@@hislittlemrs.9235 yes it's sad, I guess that's why I like to escape somtimes by watching these old episodes.
"I beg your pardon!"..."No, I beg YOUR pardon!"
But, no one ever grants the pardon and assures the person that begging isn't necessary.
@@kh23797 ..hmmm. I always consider "How do you do" similar to "How are you doing?"..."Thanks for asking. I am just fine. How are YOU doing".
....
If ya don't want all that banter, two people can merely exchange "Howdy"s.
"How do you do?" in this context really functions as "Hello!" So the proper reply is to say Hello back, i.e., "How do you do?"
It has nothing to do with health.
He wasn’t shot down by the Nazis but by the Luftwaffe.
@@UkOutreach and the difference is ?

You will find that is not true.
Brett's Sherlock filmings were the most actuate to the stories ... all particulars were checked ...

@@mirandachamberlain7424 How about in particular?
The narration by Watson (1:11) is the hallmark of the Sherlock Homes fictional series.
Ronald Howard was a fine actor. Who ever said he lacked star quality was truly mistaken. Any actor or anyone associated with theatre of films etc makes a great mistake in expecting or requiring an actor or actress to be the remake of their father or mother or anyone else does folly indeed.
Great series... addicting
I would really like to know more about the actress, "Karen" who played Peg Hall, Harvey Winthrop's fiancee'. No last name indicated in the credits and no results doing an internet search.

Quite weird, that. She is quite a handsome woman, as were a lot of the actresses in this series.
