This is a very modest Mitch slap. Hallelujah contains an extreme Mitch slap. Welcome to the freak show: Mitch soaring to heaven, Avi blowing the bottom out of speakers and Kevin, the human 808 and Scott and Kirsty keeping the whole thing from exploding.
Absolutely Mitch slapped! We Pentaholics LOVE seeing that first Mitch slap. As you go down the rabbit hole, note that there has been only one change in 11 years. Avi, the dark haired one with the beard singing the bass notes, left the group amicably in 2017. Matt took his place. As he is black, it will be easy to tell which one is the "new" guy, although not really new anymore after 5 years in the group. Mitch and Kirsty (rhymes with thirsty) change their look with almost every video. Mitch has his baby face stage, then he lost weight and is now extremely thin. He goes from long hair (think mullet) to bald throughout the years, so if you hear a high voice sung by a white man, it's going to be Mitch - even if it doesn't look like him. Kirsty is the same. It will always be her no matter what color of hair she has. Scott, the blond, is the baritone, but he also sings bass when the bass singer is soloing and amazingly, tenor at times. He has the largest range of voice. Kevin is the beatboxer, but he is also a pretty high tenor and does sing at times. He is also a concert cellist, and will play his cello (Beyonce) in some of their songs. He beatboxes while playing - called celloboxing. That's the group. Enjoy!
It's such a joyous song the way they've done it. And it's all thanks to Kevin, the beatboxer who brought this idea to their arranger, Ben Bram and worked with him. Kevin wanted to celebrate his Nigerian ( dad) and Granadian (mom) roots and it's just wonderful. Yes...Mitch is a natural counter tenor. His voice is naturally that high, but he has a lovely lower register as you'll find out when you continue on this PTX journey. The members: Mitch Grassi = counter tenor Scott Hoying ( tall blond guy) = Baritone Kirstie ( Kirstin) Maldonado = mezzo soprano Avi Kaplan ( bearded guy) = bass ( Avi left in 2017 and has a solo career now. He was replaced by Matt Sallee) Kevin Olusola = beatboxer, cellist, tenor. Definitely continue on with Christmas songs. Mary Did You Know, Carol of the Bells, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, 12 days Of Christmas, Thank You.
Congratulations on your Mitch Slap. The first Mitch Slap was when he was 2 and half years old and his Dad (Mike) heard music coming from his room and thought it was a toy. It was his son Mitch singing away. PTX is 11 years old so many Christmas albums, not just songs and they have Originals that each member wrote. Scott and Mitch met when they were 10 years old doing the play "Charlie And The Chocolate Factory" and Mitch met Kirstin around age eight. The trio formed in High School and have been blending together for 20+ years.
You are right. That was Mitch and you haven’t heard anything yet. You need to do a reaction to The Prayer. Great!! They are up for a Grammy for the album that it is on. It is their Christmas album from last year, Evergreen. They are the best. The radios don’ feel a cappella will sell so many reactors are surprised when they hear them that they have been around for so long. Just glad you found them now!!💕💕
The last frame: left to right, Avi (bass perfundo) who left the group at the end of 2017. Kirsten (mezzo soprano/alto); Scott (baritone and covers bass if the bass is singing lead); Mitch (counter tenor/contra tenor) who will slap you almost every song but also has a beautiful lower register, and Kevin, beatboxer supreme, cello master, and also a tenor with a nice high range. He doesn't get to sing much. After Avi (the bearded guy) left, he was replaced by Matt who you saw doing the lead in the Grinch song.
I like that you puzzled Mitch slapping out by who you were surprised by lol. You were correct! Mitch is a counter tenor so he has a very high and very beautiful voice. Check out 12 Days of Christmas next! They put a huge spin on it.
Had to watch your reactions to PTX again 😂 "That's Mitch isn't it?" Never gets old!! I watched your reaction to Hallalulah, then The Grinch reaction again and here I am! Let's Goooo!! More PTX!
Ohhhhh my new friend..... You've just scratched the surface of the wonder that is Pentatonix..... I'm looking for to ANY PTX reactions.... Fasten your proverbial seat belt.... You're in for a helluva ride !!!
Yup, that's Mitch! :) You mentioned vocal stacking: you have to do their versions of Carol Of The Bells and Silent Night! Doesn't get much better! For more Mitchslaps: The Prayer; Hallelujah; Bohemian Rhapsody. Oh, and if you want an impression of them performing live: try Joyful Joyful, from their 2021 Evergreen Christmas tour. Here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/Us8Px4PAsjw/v-deo.html.
Mitch is my favorite member and they use him quite strategic bc he.has this uncanny ability to bring out emotion in this audience. He has absolute mastery of that incredible voice and as one reactor saud it's a once in a generation voice. Another said its like ur wearing a shock collar and even if you know it's coming hr starts singing and ZAP!
Am subscribing for the Pentatonix reactions - I love it when someone discovers them. You are in for a huge treat! And yes, you got Mitch-slapped! You need to listen to their version of Hallelujah (that's often people's first mitch slap!). It's has over 600 MILLION views! They have been going for 11 years, with only one line up change (the bass singer, Avi, who has the beard in this one) who left amicably in 2017 and was replaced by Matt Sallee, who sang the solo on Mr Grinch. They have won three Grammys an are up for another one for their Christmas album last year. They also have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. Scott (tall, blonde baritone), Mitch and Kirstie have been friends since they were 8 years old and sang in high school together in Texas - where they all grew up. They recruited Kevin (the beatboxer and cello player, who also sings!) and Avi to enter the third season of the a cappella competition, the Sing Off in 2011. As a newbie, I'd recommend their Daft Punk medley (that got them their first Grammy and the video was made for made in one of their kitchens for around $400!), also Bohemian Rhapsody (you should see how Mitch does the guitar solo with his mouth!), The Prayer, Mary did you know, 12 days of Christmas....I could go on and on. They have a huge catalogue and their originals are fantastic but much under-rated. Enjoy!
They really are musical geniuses and yes, their live performances are LIT 🔥. Not only are they outstanding vocalists but they’re arrangements are 🤯🤯🤯. I hope you continue with PTX after Christmas, they have an amazing catalog of brilliant originals and upgrades of covers. They rarely cover a song “straight”, they always add their magic ❤️🙌🙌
Time for the basic course on who the individuals in Pentatonix are. From this video, at 7:21 , from left to right: * Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable) Kaplan, lyric bass. Avi is a true basso profundo; his lowest note has been known to blow out speakers in live performances. However, his range extends well into the baritone. Avi is also the only member who has left Pentatonix - he resigned for personal reasons in 2017 and has since been replaced by Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable). You saw Matt take the lead in "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch." His range is greater now than it was when that video was made. I attended their concert in Denver on November 20, 2022, and in the second verse of "Hallelujah," where Matt takes the lead, his lowest note sounded to me as low as anything I ever heard from Avi, which Matt couldn't do when he first joined, and I would swear that his highest note was actually in the *tenor* range! Matt is spectacular. * Kirstin, AKA Kirstie (rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado. Officially Kirstin is a mezzo soprano, but in the real world she actually sings from alto through coloratura soprano, the lowest and the highest ranges that women reach. * Scott Hoying, lyric baritone. Scott's lowest register is well into the bass range and his highest register is well into the tenor range. In studio recordings and official videos the bass will record an extra track that they'll layer in to cover the bass part in the harmonies while the bass is soloing, but in live performances Scott sings those harmonies. * Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), counter tenor (also called contra tenor). Mitch has a range of just over 6 octaves. Shawn Stockman, of Boyz II Men, described his voice as "one of the prettiest voices I have ever heard in my life." And because of the bullying Mitch received in high school over how high his voice is Mitch *still* feels insecure about his talent. * Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loo"-shoh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the 4th syllable), beatboxer extraordinaire. In addition to being one of the best beatboxers on the planet (perhaps *the* best) Kevin has a lovely tenor voice that we don't hear as often as we'd like, and is known for his gorgeous falsetto. His infectious laugh feels like it could light up the world. He also plays keyboard, saxophone, and cello, and has devised a technique that he calls "celloboxing," which is beatboxing while playing the cello. Kevin played in Carnegie Hall when he was a child and had already won a Grammy before he joined Pentatonix, at the ripe old age of 22, just after he graduated from Yale pre-med. He speaks five languages, including Mandarin, and this arrangement of "O Come All Ye Faithful" was his idea. In short, Kevin is a genius.
Great reaction to this beautiful Pentatonix video. Thank you. I bet you did not think that you would be chair dancing to "O Come All Ye Faithful" before you started this reaction. lol. There has only been one member change in their 11-year history. Avi, the bass in this video, left in 2017 for personal and family reasons. Matt became their bass in October 2017.
My favorite...I've loved the song for so many years, literally watching the movie for that and Oh Happy Day, playing TV as loud as possible every time. I love that Mitch did the Lauryn Hill part 💓
Welcome new Penatholic; get ready to have your ears blessed and be shocked in the very best of ways on each and every song. Make a joyful noise unto the LORD. If this isn't the definition of that sentence, I don't know what it could be. Who knew that a song of praise could turn into a dance party? Pentatonix did and we are better for it. Be prepared to be Mitch Slapped, Scott Suplexed, Avi Attacked (he left the group in 2017 on good terms), Matt Mashed (joined after Avi left), Kirsty (like thirsty) Kicked, and KO'd by Kevin (beatboxer extraordinaire, master cellist).
Mitch has an amazing voice but they all have amazing voices. Prepare to be amazed. Welcome to the PTX family. You’re about to become a pentaholic. You will be slapped by each one of them on different songs. Scott is my favorite. Can’t wait to see more reactions.
If no one’s mentioned it, than I’ll be the first, but if someone has, then I’ll just reinforce, you also MUST react to the other 2 A Cappella groups in the Trifecta; Home Free and Voiceplay. The analogy is that Pentatonix are the “Jocks,” Home Free are the ones “throwing the kegger in the back 40,” and Voiceplay are “The Theater Kids!” They’ve collaborated with each other, they all fill a niche somewhere musically for us. Not sure we can give a favorite since, like our children, that’s sometimes hard to admit!! I can tell you if you start reacting more to each of them, the people WILL come…😊
Mitch is a tenor/ contralto. Yes, he sounds like a soprano. Kevin...beatboxer, singer, percussion. Scott... baritone....Avi (looks like Jesus...the bass. New videos Matt is bass.
Late to the game, but I LOVED this reaction. Thank you for your joy. I think everyone has already answered all of your questions, so I will leave it at that.
I enjoyed seeing your reaction. Love the chair dancing. Totally understandable. Earned yourself a new sub. You may also enjoy their 90’s Dance Medley and their Evolution of Michael Jackson. If you like rap, you may enjoy their renditions of Can’t Hold Us and Problem. Best wishes from Tennessee 😊🇺🇸
Pentatonix has been around for a good few years. They do quite a bit of styles of music at hit each perfectly. The one that changed was Avi, the shorter one with the dark beard. Don't worry, his replacement is every bit as good.
Believe it or not, Mitch is singing in his lower registers in this song. There are videos of him singing pure notes above what any woman can do. You don't need to react to this, but here is a link to a video that shows Mitch's entire range. Be prepared to fall out of your seat because Mitch is gonna slap the crap outa ya. Caution, Caution Will Robinson! (1960s sci fi tv series) There is a scene in this video that shows PTX, including Kirstie, singing in a men's room while a guy is taking a leak in the urinal. ua-cam.com/video/X4YjMKjLkZ0/v-deo.html Mitch is the one who's appearance changes constantly during the last 11 years. You will see 2 different versions of Pentatonix. One with Avi (with the beard) as the bass from 2011 to 2017, and the other with Matt as the bass from 2017 to present. Matt had the solo in Mr Grinch. Both Avi and Matt are wonderful basses. Scott covers the bass whenever Avi & Matt have solos. Since it is the Christmas season, I recommend that your next PTX reaction be "The Prayer". It's an operatic song and features Mitch with an angelic voice (some say alien), and Scott singing the opera baritone part in the original Italian. It also shows the Wall of Sound that PTX is capable of using only their voices. The Prayer, in my opinion, is one of the top 5 songs they've ever done.
Your genuine appreciation of these amazing vocalists are indeed appreciated! You will be getting a new subscriber in me. Please keep the Pentatonix reactions coming!!!
Yes that was Mitch. I enjoyed your reaction to this, "let me guess that's Mitch" I laughed so hard. I know you already have have a full playlist, but if you really want to see Mitch show out, do The Prayer, it is a cover of Celine Dion and Andre Bouchilli, it's one of the best things they've ever done. The other song I would suggest for you see Mtch's full potential is not a Christmas song, and besides you haven't listened to enough PTX, you are not ready for that one. Nothing personal but that song has ran off people that thought they were ready. As long as you react to PTX, the Pentaholics will be here for you. I look forward to the next installment....edit forgot to say Hallelujah (official video) is currently setting at 693M views, then there is the sing along at 10M, the 2016 tour live another 49M plus another video or two, so they are well over 700 Million views on that song. Yes they are that big. They are doing sold out concerts between 15k and 30k, I don't remember the exact top number but;s it in there.
Yay! I just discovered your channel today with this reaction, the best version of this song ever, such a joyous celebration ❤, now I have to check out your channel 😊
@@ToneyReactions There are times when they pass it back and forth flawlessly. I suspect that them performing together since they were 8 made them know each other's abilities completely.
Between this one and the Grinch, how could I not subscribe? Well done, I enjoyed your reaction, your insights and your delight! Please be aware that they routinely get copyright blocked, so if you need to obscure the video with text or logos or play with opacity so the visuals are transparent, that’s just fine. As long as you can see it clearly, that’s what we’re here for. I love it when new reactors discover PTX and find the same awe and admiration I experienced not so long ago. Peace from Ohio … Almost forgot, you can find the live version of Hallelujah fairly easily, and that would be a good one to do.
You nailed it in one, LOL! That is INDEED Mitch, Mitch-slappin' ya! So I would be SO REMISS to not request that you watch their rendition of "The Prayer" next - you will NOT be disappointed - it's SO. GOOD!
Yep, you figured out who Mitch was - and got slapped by his amazing voice! You're certainly not the first to think his voice was coming from Kirstie - and won't be the last. I've seen one reactor who absolutely convinced herself that Mitch was lip-synching for a female singer who wasn't being shown for some reason - she had to have someone who'd heard Pentatonix before tell her that yes, it really was Mitch singing! So glad you enjoyed this song - it's such a different version than anyone expects! And there are a lot more Pentatonix songs (Christmas and otherwise) for you to enjoy!
OMG!! I loved your reaction and just subbed. If you want a really hard Mitch slap, you need to Watch Hallelujah. Your mouth will hang open and your mind will be blown !!! BTW, Pentatonix does not do covers, THEY DO UPGRADES 😂
Your ptx reactions are so good. Hope you do a lot more. If you want to see them live try halleluja from their christmas special 2016 i believe you will be even more mitch slapped
isn't it wonderful to discover new music? you got mitch slapped and be prepared for more. he can rap too; they all can. they do every kind of music. they have gotten me through the pandemic. so much great music in the world, so much talent.
If you want to be slapped again, go see Mary did you know or Hallelujah. Mitch is Impressive but listen carefully to Avi low and warm notes 😍 wonderful and fabulous 😉 thanks for your reaction 👍 that was great
So glad you reacted to this! Subbed for more PTX! This is the top Group in a Capella! You just wait, there is more where that came from! Happy Holidays! At least you now who Mitch is. But don't be dismayed he is like a chameleon. He looks different in almost all videos. A 'fashionista' so to speak! You'll learn who all of them are if you continue to react to them.
Found you at random and loved how truly into music you are. It's not just what you say, but your body language and the expressions on your face - that look of pure surprise at Mitch when you first heard him, and that child's joy when you heard all four parts of PTX plus Kevin on beatbox PLUS the choir in the background PLUS the extra backing African answer chorus of ee-yeh ee-yeh (this arrangement is GENIUS, I swear, and I don't throw that term around lightly). .. I just found such delight in watching you discovering this arrangement along with the awesomeness of Pentatonix. I'm a musician (singer, pianist and organist), and have sung/played many a Christmas carol service. I've never heard a better, more uplifting version of this carol, and I bet more than one church would be in need of a new roof after Christmas Eve service if this version was sung because the roof would be blown off. I subscribed to your channel immediately and have a lot of catching up to do (obviously). If you want to experience another Mitchslap, check out PTX's covers of "Come Along" and "When the Party's Over". You're awesome, man.
"That's Mitch ain't it?" 🤣 You my friend have officially been Mitch slapped!! Great reaction!!
If you want a real Mitch slap, look into the Prayer and Mary, Did You Know? Amazing.
Agree. ❤❤❤
I second this
I agree too and Also can you feel love tonight after chrismas season

AND Dance Of The Sugar Plum Faries!

Oh Baby,

Hallelujah is a must!
The most joyous song ever!!!
Your reaction and statement about Mitch was priceless!

You sharing your joy while watching this transferred joy to me. Thank you for sharing and so visibly enjoying.
Silent Night was recorded live in one take, well worth the listen. It's my favorite rendition of the song.
Agree!
Yes. It’s so amazing

Went to their concert last night. They are wonderful live. Sound just as good as on here. Can't wait to see them again!!!
That incredibly deep bass is Avi. He can also sing in an overtone. Avi now does his own stuff. It's worth checking out.
Don't let the Mitch slap worry you; it's happened to all of us. In fact, it's happened to most of us more than once - Mitch is full of surprises.
They don't just do "covers". They UPGRADE them!
Loved your reaction! Also loved how you worked out who Mitch was😂😂😂

Next upgrade to react to carol of the bells live performance
I can tell you if you start reacting more to each of them, the people WILL come…😊
By FAR my favorite arrangement of this song. If you aren't raising your hands in joy, you're not living your best life.
Mitch is a tenor/ contralto. Yes, he sounds like a soprano. Kevin...beatboxer, singer, percussion. Scott... baritone....Avi (looks like Jesus...the bass. New videos Matt is bass.
I love how they sanged oh come all ye faithful
We are called Penta-holics! :).
Yes, that was a Mitch-slap. 😁
Welcome to the rabbit hole of ptx. They will amaze you on every song. Each of them are so talent. They do covers but make them upgrades
Mitch will slap you in Hallelujah, Mary Did You Know, Bohemian Rhapsody just to name a few. Please react to those. 💜
Late to the game, but I LOVED this reaction. Thank you for your joy. I think everyone has already answered all of your questions, so I will leave it at that.
Lol you're right on time.... I've done hallelujah as well
Check out their Mary Did You Know. It’s a great song. Been following you since Silk sonic.
Love the Mitch slapped! You got it right away.
Your genuine appreciation of these amazing vocalists are indeed appreciated! You will be getting a new subscriber in me. Please keep the Pentatonix reactions coming!!!
It's commonly referred to as the 'wall of sound'...
I got a Pentatonix playlist!
Please react to Pentatonix singing
The Prayer
Amazing Grace
Hallelujah
Thank You
Be My Eyes
I love the transition from Mitch to Kirstin in this song. It’s flawless. You can’t even tell the difference between their voices.
I thought it was her!! Lol
Yeah, I would rather have it blurred than have it cut
One of the best Mitch slap reactions I've seen. So good!!
He got me good lol
Love came on Christmas, Joy to the world, Kumama Papa You'll love that one.
You nailed it in one, LOL! That is INDEED Mitch, Mitch-slappin' ya! So I would be SO REMISS to not request that you watch their rendition of "The Prayer" next - you will NOT be disappointed - it's SO. GOOD!
So fun to see someone on their PTX journey especially with this song😁 So great!
I saw that reaction, she had to call her husband in to tell her it was his voice. I laughed so hard, I had to show that reaction to my wife, and son.
True definition of a Mitch slap right here! 😅
Great reaction! Their live performances will stun you senseless!
Officially called a counter tenor, one of the rare and beautiful voices!!
OMG!! I loved your reaction and just subbed. If you want a really hard Mitch slap, you need to Watch Hallelujah. Your mouth will hang open and your mind will be blown !!!
BTW, Pentatonix does not do covers, THEY DO UPGRADES 😂
Thanks for subbing! i did it!!!
Your ptx reactions are so good. Hope you do a lot more. If you want to see them live try halleluja from their christmas special 2016 i believe you will be even more mitch slapped
This is a great one to react to. I second this.
The other members were originally Avi, Kevin, Kirstin, and Scott, Now the lineup is Matt, Kevin, Kirstin, Scott and Mitch
You just got slightly Mitch slapped. Keep going down the rabbit hole for more!!!! You won't be disappointed!
Oh please do all their stuff. They're so amazing and always put a smile on your face😊
New subscriber! Best Mitch slap reaction I've seen in a long time!! 😂 That's Mitch ...yep...lol.
Lol I felt it
Yep…that’s our Mitch. ❤
isn't it wonderful to discover new music? you got mitch slapped and be prepared for more. he can rap too; they all can. they do every kind of music. they have gotten me through the pandemic. so much great music in the world, so much talent.
Reminds me of Lion King
If you want to be slapped again, go see Mary did you know or Hallelujah. Mitch is Impressive but listen carefully to Avi low and warm notes 😍 wonderful and fabulous 😉 thanks for your reaction 👍 that was great
omg haha! "That's Mitch, ain't it?" You got it! and a sub too! Thanks for the reaction.
How could you not know about them? Especially since they have been around for over 10 years! Well just think of all the fun you are going to have!
Heard of them never listened tho
This song gave me major chills!!
We don't listen to enough music! Thank you..great reaction!
You feel this music, don't you? Appreciate your insights into what they are doing. Well done.
I hope u keep listening to PTX after Xmas...their non-Christmas library is massive 😊
Please react to “Beginners Guide to Pentatonix” you will learn all about the Group
And he’s not done slapping the “hell” out of you yet! Love your reactions!
Little drummer boy, PTX.
Wow. Simply wow.
If you really want your mind blown go check out their Daft Punk medley
