  • Ralph Nader discusses his book, "To The Ramparts", at Politics and Prose on 9/23/18.
    Since the release of Unsafe at Any Speed in 1965, Nader has led the charge against destructive and exploitative corporate power. The co-founder of public interest groups including Public Citizen, Critical Mass, Commercial Alert, and the Center for the Study of Responsive Law, Nader continues to demonstrate the efficacy of grassroots activism for democratic change. His new book is a searing analysis of how Big Business, abetted by the flaws of recent presidential administrations, created the political climate that put Trump in the White House. As provocative as ever, Nader takes both Democrats and Republicans to task for their failures to curb corporate excesses and their abandonment of the poor and middle-classes.

    Born in Connecticut in 1934, RALPH NADER has spent his lifetime challenging corporations and government agencies to be more accountable to the public. His 1965 book Unsafe at Any Speed permanently altered the course of a reckless U.S. automobile industry and made Nader a household name. His lobbying and writing on the food industry helped to ensure that the food we buy is required to pass strict guidelines before reaching the consumer. One of Nader's greatest achievements was his successful lobbying for a 1974 a.m.endment to the Freedom of Information Act, which gave increased public access to government documents. Over the years he has co-founded the public interest groups Public Citizen, Critical Mass, Commercial Alert, and the Center for the Study of Responsive Law. His 2000 presidential campaign on the Green Party ticket served to broaden the scope of debate on the nation's priorities. Named by the Atlantic as one of the hundred most influential figures in American history, Nader continues to be a relentless advocate for grassroots activism and democratic change. He lives in Washington, D.C.

    Here's ten monumental things we can thank Ralph Nader for. 1. OSHA 2. Nutrition labels on food 3. Airbags 4. Clean Air Act 5. Smoke free restaurants, airlines, and public places 6. Whistleblower Protection Act 7. Clean Water Act 8. Mine Health and Safety Act 9. Safer children's toys 10. American Museum of Tort Law. Ralph is certainly a rare breed. In this day and age there are few Americans with the number of accomplishments that he has. Our rights are being attacked every day here in America and we need to use the tools of our predecessors in order to create real and positive change in America.

    I voted for him during his Presidential run. I am 60+ and I know how ridiculously unsafe cars were until his push made them safe. I have quit smoking for decades (since 1997, after quitting twice and then starting again, now I am smoke free; thank God). I know for a fact how insane the tobacco craze was; we even had candy cigarettes for kids to build future consumers for cigarettes! Freedom and respect for other people's rights go hand and hand. The manipulation of consent is a very serious point. Even more serious is the geopolitical missteps he points out. He is the only one who has had the courage to lay it all out. The US Congress can change the composition of the Supreme Court by changing the number of seats. How? The number of seats on the US Supreme Court has throughout American History, that is a fact.

    Ralph, you are and have become a truly great speaker. I will steal what I can because you show a lot of experience in dealing with working with people's cognitive associations. You are a hero of mine, thank you and I'll do what I can which is more because of you. You deserve an army. As do the whistleblowers on FAR too many fronts. Nothing is given without fighting for it, the privileged and ruling class let nothing go without being forced to, unfortunately it has been so since the beginning of known history. To know how to fight requires knowledge and a will to organise and adopt some discipline. It is not an impossible task, far from it, we, the people have the decisive power, it is only a question of becoming conscious of such reality.

    At 33:12 to 33:55 Ralph shows that he cares deeply about people due to the sad but true hospital patient death rate. Ralph was born in 1934 and comes from a pre-ecology and pre-environmental generation. Now that the environmental generation of MD's are running hospitals, running med schools and running medical advancements it is very easy to turn the blind eye and let someone die rather then save them. Polio and Malaria have come back and are on the rise as proof that while we cleaned up our environment, human life is sacrificed. I worked 25 years helping in a lab and helping doctors Ralph Nader's age . During the first 10 years of this century, we pushed hard to get medical advancements used in hospitals and taught at Med Schools etc.. Today, I fear no new medical progress will happen and for many decades to come.

    Talk to people, I mean real people. When I go grocery shopping I make it a point to talk to one stranger. It's easy and in many cases we both walk away alittle wiser. When I was 20/21 I bought a 2 month bus ticket and bused and backpacked cross the Northern US and Southern Canada. To this day I draw upon many delightful unexpected learning experiences.
    Why did I leave the comfort of home and walk out my front door? Because growing up between the trials and tribulations of New York City and Washington DC I here in Connecticut I thought my Nation was crumbling, but once I got free I was introduced to a most amazing country filled with the most amazing people. We're a young Nation still growing dealing with an older Globally Community. I'm a Senator Sanders supporter, but I think we needed Trump to show how fragile our Democracy still is and how divided we can become. Plus how a Foreign Agent can influence us. I'm confident we will survive this growth period as a stronger Democracy than ever. Please VOTE this midterm it's probably the most important midterm of our Nation. Have a great day and follow your bliss.

    • @whateverimtold9872
      @whateverimtold9872 6 років тому

      I LOVED your comment...except for the 'foreign agent' part. There was no actual 'influence'. There were a few Russian companies that were trying to build a base for advertising. Which did not actually interfere with anybody's choice.
      What did interfere with people's choice was the DNC rigging the primary. They weren't a foreign agent though...

    We keep staring at the forest and wonder how it lives but not understand the basis of the ecology of the forest.
    If there is no democracy in the workplace (aka capitalism) the political democracy will wither and die. Life is sustained by all parts. Without roots leaves can't appear to absorb sunshine and thrive and in turn feed the roots. We have beautiful artificial trees that resemble democracy. Every part has to vote for every other part.
    Mr. Nader has done his job by exposing the main faults of capitalism, callousness and carelessness, for people, for the environment and for life. Profit is above all.
    Now it is in respect to his work that we need to take his inspiration and move to the next level. Make all corporations cooperative employee companies. The government must loan money to employees to make such transitions.

    • @whateverimtold9872
      @whateverimtold9872 6 років тому +1

      Capitalism is NOT Also Known As democracy in the workplace. Capitalism by definition means an economic system of 'owners and workers'. Has not a thing to do with democracy.
      I know worker co-ops is probably the best solution though. Were you influenced by Professor Richard Wolff...?

    The "can't be bothered" attitude you describe stems in large part from decades of military interventionism where citizens have been told that it's perfectly acceptable to let less than 1% of our citizens (soldiers) go do all the "democracy building" for us. This lets people off the hook of participation, but it also indoctrinates them to (likewise) have the same attitude toward the power they once had as citizens; ie., "leave it to us to handle..." IOWs, we have been conditioned to be and behave exactly as we do today...and think it entirely "normal." And then become too lazy to believe any different. We're doomed absent an upheaval.

    As much as I love Ralph I’m just starting to learn the serious downsides of renewable energy compared to the incredible advantages that Thorium based nuclear reactors have over traditional nuclear power. No melt down possible, dramatically less nuclear waste with only a few hundred years of toxicity compared to hundreds of thousands of years toxicity with traditional nuclear. Moreover, exiting nuclear waste when processed with Thorium reduces its toxicity to the same short time line offered by Thorium. Check out the UA-cams on Thorium reactors on numerous TED talks

    We need to develop a revolutionary progressive party with a first plank: to pay The People to vote , $ 500 off of federal income tax, (documented by boards of elections) and to make election day a national holiday. This could easily be paid for, if we ever find the missing $ 21 trillion dollars from the U S Military or $ 12 trillion from the (not so) federal (not even a) reserve banksters.

    An inspirational no-notes talk. The only thing I could possibly have an issue with AFAICS is his stance on nuclear energy, which seems based on the old fearmongering days. There are massive developements in nuclear technology which are far superior to the old tech (being phased out) reactors.

    The majority of Americans agree that our political and economic systems are broken. They no longer serve the interests of the majority of Americans. The economic system is the result of political decisions made through legislation and enforcement. Thus, it cannot be reformed until and unless the political system is changed.
    With the importance and high cost of television advertising, campaign finance has become the most important factor in winning elections. Both political Parties vie to attract donations. In doing so, they become beholden to the rich donors. That, together with a winner takes all system of elections, has meant that the two main Parties have drifted closer together on almost every major issue.
    When it comes to banking and Wall Street deregulation, military spending, anti-trust enforcement, policing and drug enforcement, health care, trade, tax, energy and monetary policy, and unfettered Executive power to make war, prosecute whistle blowers, spy on, detain indefinitely and even execute citizens without due process of law, there is almost no substantive difference between the two major political Parties. As just one example, when the Democrats had complete control of the Congress and the White House, they adopted the Republican Health Care plan first proposed by the Heritage Foundation and implemented by Governor Mitt Romney in Massachusetts.
    Campaign finance not only corrupts the political system, it also renders it dysfunctional. Even the few honest politicians who try not to be influenced by their campaign donors, have to spend so much time and energy trying to raise money for the next election cycle that they have no time to read proposed legislation or study the issues. They have to rely on their staff and lobbyists to advise them how to vote.
    The winner takes all election system has led to Gerrymandering in Congressional districts and an Electoral College where the winner of the popular vote can lose the election. It has also led to the exclusion of Third Parties from the national discourse. Fresh ideas and dramatic change usually only comes when Third Parties have a real voice in the debate. When the Abolitionists could not find a voice within either the Whig or Democratic Parties, they formed the Republican Party.
    The “Citizens United” Supreme Court decision opened the flood gates to campaign finance abuse by removing virtually all federal limits and controls on political contributions. There is little likely hood that either the Supreme Court will reverse itself or Congress will pass a Constitutional Amendment limiting campaign contributions and/or spending. The good news, however, is that the Supreme Court based its decision on the First Amendment “Congress shall make no law . . . abridging the freedom of speech.” This leaves the door open for the individual States to reform the political system.
    The States can have a dramatic impact on the election system so that elected officials reflect the will of the voters rather than that of the donors. The following are ways in which the States can empower their voters.
    States can limit those who can contribute to political campaigns to only those natural persons who are eligible to vote in the election. This would prohibit any person not residing in the voting district from making a campaign contribution. You can’t vote, run for office or sign a petition unless you reside in the district. Why should you be able to influence an election if you don’t reside in the district? Why should an oil millionaire in Texas be able to influence an election in Illinois, or a rich celebrity in New York or California be able to do so in Mississippi? Don’t we already prohibit foreigners from making campaign contributions? This would also prohibit corporations, unions, and other associations from making campaign contributions.
    States can also put absolute limits on individual contributions and/or on campaign spending. They can have matching funds or prohibit all campaign contributions and have 100% public financing of elections.
    To make it easier for every eligible person to vote, States can make voting day a paid public holiday, like most of Europe.
    To eliminate Gerrymandering and make it possible for Third Parties to have a voice, States can use Proportional Representation. Instead of separate Congressional Districts, the State would elect Representatives in a state-wide election in proportion to the number of votes received by each political party. Thus, if a State had 11 Representatives and the Republicans gained 40% of the vote, the Democrats 41%, the Libertarians 14%, and the Greens 5%, the State would send 5 Republicans, 5 Democrats and 1 Libertarian to Congress. Congress would more closely represent the will of the voters than our present system. Two States, Nebraska and Maine, already do so. (www.fairvote.org/research_electoralsystemsus)
    Instead of trying to change the Electoral College, States can use the same Proportional Representation for electing delegates to the Electoral College. Proportional Representation significantly reduces the possibility of the winner of the popular vote losing the Presidential election and gives Third Parties a national voice.
    Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) can be used in state wide elections where there is only one office to be filled, such as Governor or US Senator. In RCV, each voter ranks his or her choices. If no first ranked candidate wins an absolute majority, the candidate with the fewest votes is dropped and the second choice of the voters who voted for that candidate are counted. If no candidate has an absolute majority, the next lowest candidate is dropped and those second-choice votes are added and so on until one candidate has an absolute majority. This system permits voters to vote for the candidate of their choice rather than always having to choose the “lesser of two evils.” One State, Maine, has implemented RCV at the state level. Seven States contained jurisdictions that have implemented RCV at the local (e.g., city or county) level. (www.fairvote.org/rcv#how_rcv_works)

    My mother talks of Nader's accomplishment as an activists. She recalls his climb to notoriety. I wonder, just wonder, what skeletons are in the man's proverbial closet? Just possible that he's a hero of a different sort. I don't know all there is to know, could be way off, but Nader gets me thinking of Jayne Cobb.
    But also, he gets me thinking of Jack Beauregard. More than probable, Ralph Nader is Jane Fonda's character in the movie My Name is Nobody. More than probable that'd be it.
