Sierra LaFaye Hi Sierra, thank you for sharing your experience in Spain. It’s interesting how people from other countries know about America but not African Americans. Most people generalize black people. But learning about how slavery played a role in the African Americans experience is too painful for most people to imagine. Thank you again.
Keep up the content.I would like to know how you were able to go abroad.

@@veliciahiley7652 It's actually very simple. We learn a bit of history in schooll, but most we know about the US is through the movies. If Hollywood didn't treat the black history we don't know it.

@@veliciahiley7652 As God said (Morgan Freeman): "There should not be African American culture, not a month of black culture, my culture and my history is the history of America." And he are right. For most people, there is no difference between a European-American or an African-American, they are the same culture and history. I do know about black, white, blue and yellow history, I like to study the past, it tells us where we come from and where we are going. Black men suffered 200 years of slavery. Whites, Orientals, Africans, all have thousands of years of slavery and wars in their past. Not the only ones, not the last. Right now in Libya and China for example, there is slavery, paid for by all who use Apple for example, or Nike, or Adidas, you are also an accomplice. Think about it.

I was in the navy and was in Rota, Spain and enjoyed it immensely. There was no problem with race upon me. I felt so free being there. As for Blacks and our hair, I wish we start to learn to do our own hair. Moms, aunties, etc would do one another's hair. Don't forget your culture and do your own hair.

Very perceptive. Spanish people stare. That's it. No hidden reason. And black culture is just not something that is part of their experience. Black is not a thing but it is part of South American culture, so it is part of South American culture which is important in Spain. Apart from that there are a few black immigrants from Africa. There are racists in Spain (and some pretty infantile, ignorant behaviour) but in general Spanish people treat people as people - and they do that really well. And 'negro' is a Spanish word which just means black. It's a colour, like black shirt, black ink, black socks.

Very interesting video, thanks for your honesty.
I'm spanish, and although I'm not black I have many black spanish friends and I wouldn't say there isn't a black community, but I think that you need to know the right places to find it. In Madrid there is a neighborhood named Lavapiés, it's the main multicultural neighborhood of Madrid, there there's a big african community and a very active panafricanist/antiracism movement, there you would find african bars, restaurants, hairshops, etc.
Also remember that spanish history of slavery is diferent to that of the US, while black slaves were taken to USA soil, in the times of the Spanish Empire slaves weren't taken to Spain but to the american colonies, that's why there are many black people in countries like Cuba, Colombia or Dominican Republic and very few in Spain, here most black persons are either inmigrants or sons of inmigrants.
Wish you all the best, Sierra.

I met like maybe two African Americans in Barcelona. Most of the other people I met that were black didn't live together. Mataró has more Africans.
One of the reasons I left after nearly two years is that there is no solid black community there. The blacks there come off as defeated and not really into organization and community development.
People were cool, but Spain was not my place for a kickback. I vowed to never live there again.

He was the second black person of the Island when the only blacks that we knew were the ones that appears in the folk tales with the elfs (for real). I love that you really took time to understand this topic from the Spanish perspective. 30 years ago there were no black people in Spain so it's a new beginning. In the US racism is a big part of the history and the culture and doesn't exist in Spain, so that opens a lot of opportunities and challenges. Some people try to do things like the US but I think that would close the possibility of a better future. It's better to do things in a new Spanish way.
I think that you are mistaken you say that you've met like 2 people that are black and born in Spain. 20 years ago, 99% of black people in Spain were poor immigrants that came from Africa and you would find them selling things in the street. Nowadays there are still people selling in the street but most of them are newly arrived. The ones that came before got better jobs, got their Spanish nationality or residency and most importantly they had children and many of them got much better jobs than their parents. Some of them are also famous singers, TV hosts, sports players, some businessman/woman, etc. You are absolutely right that there is no black community in Spain because these young man and women share the same culture than every Spanish person. A black girl from Galicia speaks Galego, has Galician accent and wears the RC Celta or Deportivo da Coruña t-shirt and eats seafood on parties with his family just like any other Galego. Yes, being black will be part of his/her identity (probably in a way that I don't fully understand) but not in the same way as in the states.
There is also another interesting topic. There was ever more black people in Spain? I have a theory that 1000 years ago a lot of black people came to Spain but you can't see them now because they are completely mixed with the white people, and that's while is a lot of people with piel morena and curly hair. I say moreno and not dark skin because I think it's a different meaning in Spain. Moreno is just a genetic heritage you get in the same way as you have a tendency to get thin/fat, you get some eye color, hair color, etc. I think it's the consequence of not keeping white and people separated.
Hope you come back to Spain soon! Don't forget to visit Galicia on one of your holidays. Remember that in A Coruña we have the biggest fashion company in the World. Coruña is not as big as Barcelona but very fashion oriented.

Sierra great informational piece on blacks in Spain and what you should expect being black in Spain, and how other races of people lacking black and black culture, one of my take away about blacks going abroad is to explore and broaden your arising with other cultures which make you grow as a person, I believe being a loaner make you stronger as a person, I know people who cannot be alone and cannot functions properly without someone there. I have another story my second job I worked after retired from the military, I was blessed to land another good paying job, I worked for the Department of Defense and I did a lot State traveling, one TDY trip, (TDY)- means Temporarily Duty Station, I went to Huntsville Alabama for a week for a business meeting and Sierra me and my friend decided to go to the mall in Huntsville Alabama, the mall was Bridge Street some name like that and Sierra, I saw this beautiful woman sitting outside on the bench, she was with another couple, one was a guy, I told my friend I got to go a talk with this woman I like that, I told my friend I only here for a few days so if I didn’t do this , I will never see this woman again. Sierra, I did the boldness thing that never did before, when the guy she was with left, I immediately went over there and had a conversation with her, her name is (IVA) , she was shocked she couldn’t believe this, I just have to get her number so she gave me her card and told me to called her so I did I called her the next day, she called me back the next day and we met again at the mall at the same spot, and she told me in a funny way, why you did that the man could have been my husband, and I responded to her and said, if I didn’t do that we wouldn’t be sitting here having this conversation, she finally start laughing out loud, but my point the beautiful woman couldn’t be alone she was use to have someone being with her, all her life but when she lost her mother and father from a car accident she couldn’t function as well with her emoitions, therefore she no longer had that support structure anymore so I saw that in her eyes, so I was very gentle with her by being so understanding while talking to her, we talk for hours at the mall everything went right but I have to leave in a few days so I didn’t pursue her anymore because she needed to do some more soul searchings, I understand about a major lost, (IVA) she had her own business selling cosmetics seem like she was doing well for herself she dressed very well very conservative dark blue suit which got my attention because I dressed very well also and conservative, so when you mention being a loner the thing that cross my mind that I know people who couldn’t be alone that came across to me about (IVA), and that can be sad in that state in your life a lost is so sad. Sierra that is the first time that I ever done something like that to be that upfront with some one, but she was so beautiful I just couldn’t let that pass me by, I am a person if I like so one I will go after it and that what I do for anything I want I will go after it, even it is a person, or a job or a place I will go after it because I am a go getter and nothing will stop me that one of my major victory in life. But being a loner is a good thing. , I would take being a loaner any day because it will make you stronger, and powerful person inside and out, its a strength. . Take Care and stay cool as a person.

First of all i would like to express my admiration and respect for having such an open mind and for your way of approaching life.
However, i don´t think it´s fair to call someone ignorant because they don´t know local historical data. You can´t blame someone who is not an american for not knowing who Rosa Parks was. At least i would not do it if someone were unaware of the invasions that Spain have suffered and the pain and injustice that they caused.
Nobody can know the entire history of the world. All countries focus their studies on their own history, which is a mistake; I think everybody should have a global knowledge of the most relevant events in history, like all kind of slavery. That would be the only way to never repeat something so horrible.

I heard though that is hard if u are black and u want to visit Russia or Ukraine but maybe gonna be almost that hard for white ppl as well there . Tbh i can not understand how u have racist problem in USA , 1 super powered country that was build and grow with multi community's maybe is because u are a bid separate and every community take care for their own . In greece we have alot of immigrants but because the education and the healthfair is free , is easy for everyone to mixed up to society atleast the last 30 year's . Black people are a very small number of the spanish population, especially if you go to rural places and the northern and central regions (excluding Madrid), there you are going to be stared A LOT because a lot of people (especially the elder) either have never seen a black person outside of TV or they saw them very long ago if they emigrated somewhere but most stares are going to be out of curiosity than "what is this person doing here?!", its similar for white people when traveling to rural China or Japan, they rarely see us outside of TV so it picks their curiosity.
The 4% African inmigrants = black people is a wrong asumption because that 4% includes people from northern Africa like Morocco, who are the largest minority with 1 million living here.

That is because our History books don’t talk about that besides a few lines such as this:
And that’s it. Also, slavery did not play an important part on Spanish culture, mostly because Castilian Christian nobles frowned upon it, since their Muslim enemies practiced it.
Finally, most of the Spanish racism comes from ignorance and imported stereotypes such as 13/50. Most spaniards will change their minds as soon as they meet one or two nice black people.
