Omar Gonzalez Photography Maybe I’ll smile in our next vlog 😂. Thanks man
@@MannyOrtiz i want to be your student
@@MannyOrtiz i'm your big fan from Bangladesh
Manny Ortiz i made the mistake and ignored your advise about how heavy and large this lens is.. and bought the lens!!! Damn it is so heavy! I returned the next day and lost $150 restock fee but better than losing more when i resell. I got the 85 1.2 instead and i love it. But learned my lesson to listen to Manny next time lol
This lens is incredible. I used to shoot a 24-105mm f4 and it was pushing ISO 6400 during theatre shoots. I can now shoot at ISO 800-1600 and the photos come out so clean. No more need to change lenses and risking missing shots.
I’m wedding photographer and I purchased this monster and I’m more than happy. In my country wedding ceremony takes usually around 5-10 minutes, so you don t have so much time to switch the lenses, but you’ll still get the quality and DOF of primes. I have two bodies on the straps - one with 28-70/2 and second with 135/2 (or 85/1.2 - depends on location). Yes, it is little bit heavy and because of that I detached grip from the body. I’m also not using flash, because I love the atmosphere on the pictures - than extra stop of light (F2 vs F2.8) is handy :)
Thank you for review - great pictures as always :)
In your country, a wedding ceremony takes only around 5 to 10 minutes? Damn! How long does a divorce take?

As a photojournalist, I always have two 5DmIV bodies with vertical grips, L glass, and occasionally 1 or 2 Speedlites on me. A 3 pound lens (basically the same weight as the EF 70-200mm 2.8 IS III) is completely within reason. IMA, the benefits outweigh any discomfort the actual weight might cause.
Word. My backpack probably weighs close to 50 lbs that holds my most frequently used gear.
@@kevindiaz3459 Hahaha, yes. I work out daily just to be able to hike with a 20kg camera backpack on me. At least it helps me to stay healthy
I’m with you. I use this lens with a 135 f2. I use it for ceremony and reception and don’t get tired. I’m 66 so a younger pro should have no problem. The look is phenomenal.
Heavy? Just imagine your gym is the world. The way to immortalize the beauty is by lifting it up and press the button. Shoot it left handed 10 reps and shoot it right handed 10 reps. Gimme 100 sets. Get buff and shoot beauty at the same time, all in one package at only $3000* !

Vanessa Joy is using the Canon 1Dx and the 70-200mm f2.8 in wedding photography, she is a little woman😁 and you big strong Manny has problems with the little EOS R and the 28-70!?
😂🤣
Just kidding 😂 beautiful pictures as always, and Canon RF lenses rock!!
Don’t some people shoot with the 70-200 for hours at weddings? It’s the same weight.
Yes but 70-200 does have IS for the slower moments during the wedding
@@sam-pnw Not sure what the point of what you are saying is. IS would be helpful on a 70-200mm at a wedding, but is mostly unnecessary for a standard zoom lens. You won't likely shoot any slower than 1/160 sec, more than fast enough to avoid the need for IS on a standard zoom.
they are just whiners, this lens has an ideal weight. more is better
On travels I walk around literally all day with my gripped D850 and 24-70 f/2.8 in my hand - that's heavier than this f/2 zoom on an R5/6. Don't think the weight issue is a big real world concern for many people, and if we weigh that against the convenience of not bringing a bag of primes to a wedding - well, this lens is a winner. An expensive one, sadly. Which Tamron or Sigma made it for E mount. :D
Thanks, Manny - I think your reasoning is spot on about not getting a special image out of such a huge lens.
Thanks for this review. This lens is a godsend for me. I mostly shoot in motion picture sets which have been getting dimmer and dimmer over the years and now with the widespread use of the Sony VENICE with its native iso 2500 they are even more so. With f2.8 lenses I am constantly having to shoot at iso 6400 to get reasonable shutter speeds of around 1/125s at times (which is about my lowest limit for photographing actors). Prime lenses have been a solution but given that a lot of times I just cant move much from my position zoom lenses are MUCH more preferable. With this lens I am able to retire my f1.4 and f1.2 primes. Thanks again for making quality content!
I can honestly say, every time I click you videos I just learn more and more about photography. As a newbie I’m still learning but I thank you for these videos.
This lens never leaves my camera when I'm shooting weddings. Probably one of the best lenses I've ever used. I dont even use my RF 50mm 1.2 anymore. I wanna sell that lens and get the RF 85 1.2
I know what you mean. This is the best lens ever made. The best!!!
Sitting in the same boat currently ^^ been struggling with getting the RF 50 but the 28-70 is so good, there is no justification for me to „limit“ myself with a prime when this zoom does it all. And that’s from someone who always used and loved primes.
@@Seitenwerk I use that lens al the time. Its fun, versatile and the quality is among the best in the entire industry.
Just picked up this BEST today. It’s simply AMazIng🏆
It's pretty remarkable what Canon did with the RF glass. This lens, by all accounts I've seen, essentially replaces the bag of primes we are all used to bringing to weddings and the 70-200 saves the weight this one adds. Not to mention the bodies are lighter than DSLRs, so all in all one gets the f/2 aperture on a zoom at nearly the same total weight as before with an f/2.8 zoom.
Thanks Manny. For putting this lens into perspective for the everyday user.😊
I did a wedding with this lens. Its huge. The upsides were obvious. The downsides were that when you do portrait work with it, it's so big that subjects are intimated, and it's great to change focal lengths but it's so big to use that you can't do that quickly, it's not a run-and-gun lens.
Manny this video was insane. The way you stiched it together was awesome, and the onboard mic made it even better.
Thanks for an honest review. I just bought the RF 24-70 f/2.8 and was on the fence about returning it for this one. After watching your video, I've decided to keep what I've got. Thanks for a great review!
I shoot portraits with a 300mm f/2.8 and a 1DX, my arms always hurt, so the 28-70 is a beauty for me
I guess it's because you use lighter cameras like the A7iii
but the usual canon wedding setup which is the 5DIV is 890g+ 24-70 2.8 is 805g = 1695g
and if i switch to EOS R.
EOS R is 660g + RF 28-70 is 1430g =2090g
so like im getting 1 stop higher than before for increased weight by 395g is ok according to me, because for one particular downside in return i don't have to carry three different prime lenses as well as it will allow you to shoot without stopping in the shoot, which is more important in a wedding. No offence but honestly it's more about taking the picture and taking a good picture and not about the comfort of the photographer.
Dude that videography at the basketball court was 🔥 🔥 🔥
i love how you shoot natural light in super bright sun and still get super good images, i have lost touch of natural light, i just shoot strobe and natural light seems harder for me lol
Yeah I give him props for natural light also.
Low-key follower from Naperville here. I've been watching your videos since the early days and you are proof that practice makes perfect!
Agreed on sticking with primes. I'll stick with my 40 Year old 50mm 1.2 and my legs for zooming :)
Interesting
I know I'm late, but I swear Manny.. U are one of my favorite photographers!
Keep a spray water bottle on you at all times that way you can wet your subjects to give that “just worked out” look or “it just stopped raining” kind of look it works for me here in Savannah GA!
Huge fan man been following you for a while now!
For anyone here put off by the lens' 3lb weight it's really not that bad for a longer shoot.
I'm used to the Sigma 50-100 f/1.8 which is 3.3lbs. Sure maybe not ideal for a full day wedding shoot but that kind of weight is pretty managable for general portrait shooting. I had the 50-100 attached to my hand all day in Spain taking photos of my family and I never got tired. I'm not super strong or anything either.
Andy Mckay which did you prefer the sigma art or the the 20-70?
@@domoniquedavenport129 Hey dude, I've not used the 28-70! Sorry! I was just wanting to get across that based on the weight of lenses i've used in the past I wouldn't be put off getting the 28-70 because of it's weight.
It would definitely seem worth it to me.
I'm enjoying you diversifying from Sony, and also exploring your craft beyond just brand or specs. Good job.
Looks like a dope lens Manny, you are getting some lovely portraits with it. If the weight is too much for you bruh, just hand it it Jared Polin; he could assist you all day long!
CANON is KING! 👊
just made the jump to get this lens i haven't used it yet .. but i can't wait amazing shoot!!!!
Im 73 years old and shoot local rugby and football. I go out with two lenses a Canon EF 400 2.8 l prime (monopod) and aEF 70-200 2.8 L no issues at all with the weight of these two.
Bruh! I shot weddings back in the late 1970's using a Hasselblad, 80mm f/2.8, a speedlight & an external speedlight battery all mounted on a Jones Bracket (look them up). I would strap the battery on the bottom of the bracket so I could set the entire rig down at times, but I'd bet it weighed in at 5-6 pounds. That's a whole lot better than what I started with which was a Rapid Omega with a modified studio strobe head powered by what was basically a small car battery carried with a shoulder strap. I ruined several suits using that rig! I'd shoot weddings with that 28-70mm f/2 lens any day of the week!
Me too, and I had a Hasselblad 500 C/M around that period. Although my main rig was a Nikon F2A + Motor Drive + Battery Pack with a 6-8 lbs Braun F900 Flash with power pack. Fast forward a bit, my Nikon D3 back in 2008 with lens trinity probably already over the size and weight limits for most. Since fast primes are trendy nowadays, I think the ~6 lbs 200 f/2 prime will gain popularity. 😊
I’m running this on an R3. Perfection!
Dude, very helpful and informative. Keep it up. I just bought the sony A7iii. Pretty stoked about it.
In the same time this weights as 2 primes, so if you shoot a festival for example and you want versatility, but also low light performance, this lens is the best.
what camera and lens did you use for this video in the basketball court? it looks very nice.
As a professional photographer I am not so much into the specs. Thanks Manny for getting right to it! When I watch review videos I want to see the final images and your experience not someone spewing out a bunch of numbers & specs. Great video!
I SO want this lens. For travel. Yes, I'm weird.
That pun was god tier.
I really don't understand so much talk about the weight. Ok, it is a heavy lens, but 70-200/2.8 is even heavier and people use it, with much heavier bodies like 5D and 1Dx, so this setup is probably half the weight what professionals use for decades.
70-200 is 2.9 pounds and the 28-70 is 3.15 pounds. I get what you are saying but considering the alternative, I think it’s a beast for focal length
People use the 70-200 for the reach. Nobody keeps it on their camera 😂
I'm a prime lens man, myself. Tried the sony 24-70mm 2.8 GM recently because I shoot a lot of live music events, which means darkness. I was not impressed at all with the images a 2.8 aperture creates. Not enough background separation for me, and the ISO was high as hell. I'm with you, Manny. Primes4life, bro. lol
There is a world of difference between this lens and that 2.8 lens. The only knock against this lens is its weight and size. Its image quality is next level. The images look like they came from a prime.
My goto lens for seniors, family and engagement was the 200 f2 with 5d4. Heavy yes but you get used to it. Ive shot 4 sessions b2b with the 200f2 haha. I'm saving up for the 28 70 f2. It beats switching out primes.
They now need a body worthy of that lens. I'm sure it's on the way. 3k is tough to justify unless you have a good sensor that can pick up a lot of detail.
wow those colors are poppin
baahahahah when i saw Jim Carey I almost died!!! well done!
Excellent review; masterful wrap-up/opinion. You're brilliant Manny.
great video man, this lens is crazy, i hope that sony will make a zoom lens f2 like this, greetings from 🇮🇹
Really good shots Manny.
I shoot pictures for many years only with two DSLRs and 2,8/24-70mm + 2;8/70-200mm zooms and speedlites and I never had any problems with their weight or handling....if your gears`s too heavy then you`re too weak or not used to it enough 😊.....a good monopod + solid ball head can help sometimes, that's what they were invented for 😉.....if you want significantly lighter and more compact equipment for whatever reason then go for Olympus...it can be so easy if you only want to
I spent 6 years with the 200/2, this lens is a baby.
you're only getting better at these man. also what camera were you being filmed with on the court??
My buddy Ryan was using the A7III + 28-75 2.8
This is a dope lens!!!! im a Nikon shooter but this is on my radar fa sho
I just need canon to make a camera model called “ball” then life would be complete 😌
I shoot at f2.0 all the time on my 50mm and 85mm f1.4. I do shoot my 35mm f1.8 wide open. This is a great wedding portrait lenses, use a blackrapid sling. done events with a duel sling blackrapid with a regular 24-70 and 70-200 f2.8, easy. Actually very jealous of canon r users. Maybe there will be an adapter for the nikon z.
Hi Manny, would you rather stick to primes while shooting weddings? Or is this lens better option?
I can totally feel and see the difference in this video what is it? new cam?
what did you film with? and what lens :O amazing slo mo and dof + good af
Realtalk, it has a stunning video quality.
Bro please continue you are the best❤️❤️❤️🔥
Bro what was the video recorded with and on it has a dope look
Thats nothing. I use the Nikkor 200mm f/2 VRII on a Nikon D850 for portraits. Total weight about 4.3kg but maybe the best portrait lens ever made. I would be happy with the weight of your combo :) Very light indeed. LOL
I shoot weddings with a 70-200 + speedlite. Time to hit the gym!
ah we need a video of you doing a photoshoot with your dog, pet photography showing off that sony animal eye tracking thing
The colors and the images are super sharp and clean. Great video!
Manny, when do you plan getting the 50-1000mm Canon lens?
Nice shots Manny,as usual...How do you like the EOS R?
I'd want an RF 24mm F/1.2 🤤
Released???
I've got an EFS 24mm for my Rebel T4i. It rarely leaves my camera body.
@@geritisdale-brock7247 the pancake one?
@@lucianistoc1264 yes, that's correct
I don't understand why do many people essentially say that the weight of this lens is prohibitive. Sure, you can go lighter and the weight is a downside. But a prohibitive one? Clearly not, given that a standard DSLR wedding setup is at least as heavy. The way I see it I save weight on the body which I can "spend" on a lens like this and get a combination that's no heavier than what I'm using now.
Love your photography- I was looking up canon reviews and your video was recommended I’m glad I decided to view it👍🏻 keep up the amazing work
This lens is a beast
cool lens... but at 3lbs... think I'll just use the 24-70 f/2.8 and deal... or just grab a prime. great to see more interesting lenses coming out though. gotta give props to Canon.
I have a question for you. What camera and lens did you use to make this video?
Sony A7iii + Tamron 28mm - 70mm my man!
Best lens I ever owned. All my primes are gathering dust since I have it. Although I love to pair it with the rf 85 1.2 🤓
me 2 and i also added the 50 f1.2. hopefully a 25 and 35 f1.2 come next year
Colin Carter 35mm 1.2 for sure will come, cant wait 😁
Kind of hard to tell from the shutter sound , but are you using Mode 1 in Silent Live Shooting, or OFF. That makes quite the difference in bokeh.
Manny I have a question. What lens was this recoded on look different that other videos something has changed here and I like the style!!!
I used the Sony A7iii + Tamron 28mm - 70mm with a polarizer to film this. Just a little color grading since it was hella bright. Cheers!
Most people swear by shooting either in shade or backlit when the sun is high. How are your noon images so flattering, can't be just lifting the shadows can it?
MANY! Question, do you shoot in lower iso (darker image) to edit better later? In this photo shoot ?
Glad to see you back. and with a Canon!

On the real though, she looks like Diana's younger sister. LoL
I thought it was her ...
I thought the same thing too.
The weight for long events is no joke. I had the Sigma 50-100 f/1.8 ART for events, in theory for the convenience of having multiple primes in one on APS-C, but the weight with a speedlight... Sold it. Not about that life.
Screw that, what camera and lens did you record with? 😁
I used the Sony A7iii + Tamron 28mm - 70mm with a polarizer to film this. Just a little color grading since it was hella bright. Cheers!
Great Video Manny once again!
what do a 35, 50, and 85mm lens weigh combined? I am guessing that it is more than the 28-70. Unless someone is leaving them in a bag somewhere then I guess that might make sense. My concern is that I might miss the extra 4mm at the wide end compared to a 24-70. The other thing I would love to see compared is images shot at 50mm comparing 1.2 to F2. Great video as always.
If rumors are true, there may be an RF 70-135 F2 in 2020-2021. I'd take that over a 70-200 2.8. I love the 28-70 and use it for all of my event work.
Dude Manny, the way this video was shot is amazing not to mention that blur it has on both of yall in video😍❤
Really hope Canon makes an 80-200mm f/2 as a follow up to this lens.
I doubt it. I would guess that it would be so expensive that no one would bother. Ever see the Sigma 200-500mm F2.8? It's 25,000 dollars. I don't think a 80-200mm F2 would be that much, but 5,000 to 6,000 would not be outside the realm of imagination. And I would imagine the only real reason anyone would want it is to shoot 200mm F2, where I would guess focus breathing is an issue, which makes a prime lens a better choice anyway.
@@kevindiaz3459 Even being 5-6k would still attract people to buy it.
@@Neopulse00 maybe, but not many. You know anyone with a lens in the 4k+ category? The shops I frequent dont even bother to stock anything in that price class because no one has ever asked them for it. Not to mention there is already a 200mm F2 and its something like 4500 USD. I cant see anyone grabbing a 80-200mm f2 for 1000+ more when likely they only want it to shoot at 200mm F2. I really don't know what will never happen, but instincts are saying not likely.
People definitely need to hit the weight room. Sony users are becoming soft LOL. Solid video man but it's worth having for everyone.
United Destiny Entertainment imagine them being photographers 15-20 years ago hearing a grow ass man bitching abt 3 pounds
Great video Manny 😁 just curious, I could hear that you still had the beeping switched on, is that just for personal preference or do you eep it on so that the model knows the shot has been taken :)

Hey +Manny Ortiz bruh I use my Nikon D3s 24-70mm vr with a quantum t5r with a small quantum softbox on the flash and I do believe that weights about 4 to 5 lbs for all weddings and parties. And thanks for making this awesome amazing video bro
I love the 28mm over 24 and 35 so having F2 in that is great since Canon will probably never make another 28 1.8 or 28 1.4 like Nikon . I just switched to R6 from 16 yrs with Nikon and miss some lenses like 28 1.4 or 105 1.4...
Dead missing my Nikon 28 1.4e. Hands down the best. I’m on sigma’s version with the r5 but definitely not as nice as Nikons.
