Thanks Colin, as someone with intermediate proficiency, I found the Selection Brush super fast and intuitive. But this tutorial helped be understand Masks more thoroughly. I can now go back to masks with more confidence, and I’m interested in using the brush variety for artistic effect with Generative Fill.
I use the selection brush a lot now. I spend a lot of time separating people from the background and use the Select Subject a lot. Obviously it's not always perfect but now while I still have the selection, I can refine it with the selection brush. I like it because I don't have to commit to a layer mask and it's always a hard edge. Before I would commit the mask and then paint in the corrections with the brush tool, or use the pen tool, load the selection and fill. The Selection Brush just removes those few extra steps, which is good because I have to edit a lot of images under a short timeline. Getting these selections done quickly gives me more creative time. By the way, thanks for the tip on the Shift [ or ] shortcuts to soften/harden a brush.
Excellent tutorial, Colin. I particularly appreciate your Quick Mask demo. I was aware of the individual techniques but putting them together in conjunction with QM opened up new ways to work for me. The fact that this way of using QM isn't obvious from just activating the tool, I think explains why the Adobe developers created the Selection Brush. How to use the SB is quite obvious from the moment you activate it. It is also very similar to the Brush masking tool in ACR and Lightroom so that lowers the learning curve. Last, I would bet that the development effort to create the SB was relatively low, so I don't think it impacted the PS development team's momentum in other areas.
Thanks Colin, excellent video, I learn more from your video. In my view, Quick Mask has been very useful in the past time, especially before Photoshop 5.0 or 4.0 at that time the layer function was weak. So we can use Type, Brush tool to create selection in QM, and if you use Brush or Type tool in QM mode, you can even use Filter such as Distort, Blur etc. to transform and combine the "magenta" shape. It fasten than use Alpha channel. But now I think using QM is unusual for young man same with Alpha channel, but QM is still useful when you need to use PS deeply.
Thanks Colin! I don't know why, but I never use the Quickmask. It just isn't part of my workflow. Now that you showed me that the QM creates a temporary alpha channel, which i can then manipulate separately with levels, and then go back to a selection just by hitting Q... that is a game changer. The selection tool... dunno. maybe. don't really see a scenario where it would be useful to me.
Selection brush is fast and very intuitive. For me, my occasional use of PS makes the selection brush a great tool. The other options are far more complicated and again, the occasional user (I'm do most of my work in Lightroom) makes the brush a better option. I'm not one to tell Adobe where to put their development resources. They know the market and competition far better than I. Their motivations which have much to do with market share are different than the mine.
Because this is a tutorial on Selection Brush vs QM, and that would make no sense ;) I did an Remove tool vs Gen Fill video last year, check it out: ua-cam.com/video/ODSAToMS-is/v-deo.htmlsi=SSSWHvzKL7f-cyWo
Selection Brush is interesting in some cases, but in many of those cases the Remove Tool works just as well and it doesn't run up your totals of usage of the Generative Fill. Even on the first image when you use the Quick Mask to remove an item, the Remove Tool does the same job and much quicker. So, did Adobe waste resources creating the Selection Brush, or are they pushing usage of Generative Fill so they can eventually start charging those who exceed the limitations???
Thanks for sharing and your thoughts. I don’t personally know of anyone who has exceeded their Gen Fill quota. I’m sure there are plenty of folks, I just don’t know them :)

Thank you Colin. Very helpful tutorial!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks. Will probably use both.
Good choice
You do good work, Smith.
Brilliant detailed explanation. Thanks Colin
Thanks!
Thanks Collin
You're welcome
I always learn a lot from you - thanks
To be honest I'll continue to use both on a horse's for courses basis. Good full explanation, Colin, thank you!
Thanks, I like your approach
Thank you very much. I'm working with Photoshop many years but I absolutely forgot about power of quick mask.

My thought is people didn’t need a new tool, just awareness of Qm. Maybe the selection brush is achieving that
I learn more with every video
I’m glad to hear it!
Thanks
Anytime

To early to tell...need more time to play with these tools. Lots to think about here.
Smart thinking
On the part where you count 5 or so clicks to mask and get rid of the line on the wall... Why not just use the remove tool ... One and done

when removing this 'lines' on the wall, wouldn't remove tool' be quicker ?
If the goal of the video was to remove the lines, then yes. But the goal was to demonstrate the selection brush

@@photoshopcafe Oh, I don't either but Adobe said that there will come a day when they begin changing for those who exceed the limits.
They should remove quick mask mode now...
NO! They shouldn't
Adobe sucks now
Thanks for the comment
