- Te Tai Tokerau Northland is New Zealand’s most underrated food region. This subtropical region which spans the top of Aotearoa is brimming with iconic restaurants, top producers and unmissable eats. This 5 part series will canvas the whole of Te Tai Tokerau Northland and share some of our favourite, must eat spots for you to visit when you do your own Northland roadie.
This Northland food itinerary explores the west coast- we hit up Kohukohu, Rawene, Dargaville and travel through the Waipoua forest. We visit a number of producers, restaurants and cafes that are included in this itinerary but there are a whole load more we didn’t get a chance to include. What an epic series you've produced! Northland feels like a whole different country. I love how green it is, not just visually, but eco-wise.
Small towns, with old wooden buildings and great food, it really doesn't get closer to heaven than that. If I were ever to make it to that side of the world, I'd just plop down there, and never leave. I might even learn to pronounce the names of the places! 🤣

having stayed there, and had the privilege of tasting that flounder, I can attest to it's freshness (even met the fisherman!) and the taste, in all honesty, It was the best fish I've every had.

Definitely one of mine too George! I find it hard to go past if it’s on a menu. We used to eat it a lot at home when I was little- my Grandma would steam it with ginger and spring onion and top it with soy sauce or pan fry it. Delicious. I stayed in one of the oldest places in Toronto,had 4 levels, still had all the original floors, walls and front stairs,and copied the original wallpaper. The food scene there is amazing as well.

I'm glad you stopped at KohuKohu it's beautiful there... we used to live in Rawene back in the 70s and we'd go over on the car ferry to play rugby and netball and pick the big fat pacific oysters that used to grow in the mangroves😋😋 we had our flounder man in town and every weekend we go and buy flounder for breakfast or dinner. We'd dive off the wharf as kids great memories watching you visit there. I think you did a video ages ago of Rawene... you had flounder at the Cafe there?! Beautiful way to end your trip in Good ole Dargaville the Kumara capital... some of my whanau live there. Thankyou for taking us on your epic journey of home bless💞💞🙏

Only last week I was thinking if you guys would go to Hokianga. I first went there in 2007 'coz I was told it was like the NZ 100 years ago. As for Dargaville, I drove past when I was going back to Auckland but I had no idea of that 1930s restaurant. Well done.
Hope you get to visit Matich’s next time you’re heading up north Wabbit. I love it and the food is so great. Hokianga does feel a bit like you’re stepping back in time eh? @@ChasingaPlate Up to Goat Island then on to the Sculptureum at Matakana. From there checked out a couple of old battle sites at Ruapekapeka and Ohaeawai. Kerikeri, Paihia, Russell and Waitangi (every school kid should see this IMO). Down to Whangarei to checkout the Hundertwasser Museum and watch the Black Ferns play Scotland. Amazing. Then across to the west coast through Kaikohe and Omapere. Down through Waipoua to see Tane Mahuta. Through Dargaville (wish I knew that fish and chip shop was there) and onto Gibbs Farm at Makarau. Epic trip but still so much more to see and do. Especially after watching your outstanding series.
