  • Watch a down to earth tour through a week of family eating in our home! Join me, Kezia Neusch, from The Whole Home showing you exactly what we cook and eat each meal, every day! This is what it looks like to stay on budget while shopping organic and sustainable food - in the middle of busy life. It's a juggle but I want to show people how to make it more possible.
I showed the grocery haul and the detailed cost breakdown in a previous video (thewholehome.co.uk/organic-food-budget/) and this is a follow up showing the actual meals all that food became, how they fit in every day life, and updating what we actually spent!
Note: This is a week in Winter where our more local produce is more limited, and you'll see that reflected in the meals. Come summer there will be a lot more berries, fruit and greens everywhere. But in Winter we eat more squash, potatoes, carrots and things like that. A lot of our staple meals though are ones that can be adjusted for different seasons with different veggie sides, different veggie components, or toppings. That helps keep life simple for me!

QUICHE RECIPE + ADJUSTMENTS I use the recipe linked below but with a few substitutions. It makes a great on-budget meal (when planned in and shopped for smartly) that's also a great way to use up leftover bits!
Full recipe and directions is from BBC Good Food: www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/c...
    NOTES:
🥦 Cream tends to be more expensive, so you can sub the cream for more milk or yogurt. (Whole milk will be best as it’s replacing cream!)
🥦The lard can be replaced with butter to save being left with lard you won’t use.
🥦Wholewheat flour can be used if that’s cheaper, but you’ll need more milk in the crust. (Usually double for me.)
🥦 You can halve the cheese and not feel lacking at all!
Drop any questions in the comments, and lots of our every day recipes are in The Whole Basics ebook at www.thewholehome.co.uk/shop/

Thank you! Sometimes the meals are weird but they work for us and they use everything up. It’s a juggle to work the costs but it’s a fun (and needed!) challenge for me :) And it pays off!

Thank you Kezia for sharing this real spend in a week! While as a family we are on a gluten free diet, this inspired me to dont look for fancy meals for my meal preps and to make the most of our weekly veggies boxes, which we found we cannot do less than 2 large ones which seasonally sometimes can look repetitive and boring but food is food and I treasure it even more knowing I can support farmers by choose them over the supermarket options. xx

Yes everyone’s going to look different with different eating styles and parameters for sure. We do very few “fancy” meals but they’re happy to us. Weekly pizza nights and waffle mornings are special family moments and to me everything is better knowing we’re staying on budget, and shopping with our values! And sometimes we do something that’s more of a one off, totally, but it still has to fit in the budget so we balance it with cheaper meals. This is just how I can keep within my brain capacity and get food on the table that’s in our budget. Such a juggle right 🤪

You're doing a great job. We eat organic about 90 percent of the time. We travel to London 1x a year and I love shopping in the grocery stores. I always bring home crumpets and oats and other things. So much cleaner ingredients in the UK than over here in California.

Crumpets are the best! We used to be on California too and yeah the laws are mostly better here on food for sure. But we loved our local CSA there - and having avocados be a more local food 😭
90% is probably about what we end up doing all things considered. I try to do 100% but then there’s the things like marmite and waste food pick ups.

I’m glad it helps! I’ll do another one when Jared’s home and it’s adjusted a bit - and maybe in summer when produce looks a bit different with the seasons :)

Such a relief to see your pans aren’t sparkling, mine aren’t either!!

Goodness no. However much I scrub that skillet I cannot get it to stay clean through the heat of baking bread! I need a non enamelled cast iron so you can’t tell! 🫣

Oh good god do people really worry about matching plates! 😮 that’s insane! But great job ❤ that was fun.

I mean, it’s the internet 😏 people care about everything! Haha. But I’m more bothered with buying second hand and not so bothered with how it looks and if it’s non traditional. I have enough that match that I can do dinner for 6 all with matching plates - but we rotate through more plates than that and I don’t fish out the matching ones for every meal. I don’t have time for that 😆

Curious what waffle maker you use? Trying to find a healthy one has been hard!

Hi! I don’t think I have the best one 🙈 In the past we’ve had a cast iron one and that’s my top choice but we sold it when we moved to England. I need to switch mine out again, this is a Breville ceramic plate one - it works fantastically but I think my top choice health wise would still be to go back to cast iron.

Those pans are so dirty! Try soaking them in boiling hot water then spray them with some dawn power wash. You should be able to scrub them clean after that

    • @thewholehome
      @thewholehome  3 місяці тому

They are! And not from lack of scrubbing annoyingly 🙄 I find with going between stove top use and use in a hot hot oven for bread it’s impossible to not have them stained. But I want a solution! This is how they look AFTER a soak and a scrub with a fine scourer! I think I should only own regular black cast iron - it lasts longer anyway and doesn’t get like this!
