Thank you for this review. I am a big Paul Merriman fan. I don’t have all of his recommendations, but the ones I have incorporated have done exceptional.
Keep up the good work, Rob. I try not to miss any of your videos.

Thank you Rob. I've followed Paul for years. He does great work with his foundation and always keeps the best interest of the investor first. I've implemented his portfolio approach for years but the reality is for me, it is too burdensome to manage with all the slicing and dicing that Paul recommends. The new fintech platforms surely could ease the administrative overhead of his approach.

I understand having three or four funds, but portfolios with this many funds is just confusing and not needed very unnecessary and I also think owning the physical Goldspot fund instead of treasuries is better

I like Paul Merriman. A nice fellow for sure.
This year I added VIOO as my small cap. It is still in the M* Tic tac toe board. Morningstar is my main source of portfolio evaluation. I have the premium account paid for by T Rowe Price (actually me due to their higher fees), but I like TRP. About 1% in in ARKK. Just enough for a taste but not enough to get drunk on. :)
    I enjoy your channel, Rob.

Rob, another great video. You talk in here about returns during times that don't jive with your portfolio, and sticking it out. What if you don't have 50 years? which portfolio holds the most promise over the next 10 years for someone in their 60's?

  • @markmorris2517

Thanks again Rob for a thorough review! Nice to see 50 years of performance but most folks will invest for at most 40 years before retirement and at that point probably can't handle that much volitility. Curious what the Paul Merriman Ultimate Buy portfolio would do with a 30-40 year variable start, similar to the Bill Bengen analysis only for the build up phase rather than draw down. Is there something special about the 50 years for this portfolio or does it show the same performance over 30-40 years with variable start years?

Hey Rob here's a topic for you to consider please. What advantages, angle, or "edge" does an individual investor possibly have vs. algos, hedge funds, institutions, et. al. in asset management/markets? Given your buy-and-hold passive approach, I'm not sure that you believe there are any such advantages, but I'd be curious to know your educated opinion on this. Also, what is the best forum (Twitter, FB, YT, ?) to ask these types of questions to you?

Rob, I got into Merriman and their buy & hold portfolio in 2008 so started in a hole but stuck with them for 12 years. I switched into their trend wise program in 2014 to 2019 and got out because of poor performance. They averaged about a plus 2% per year over that period. I felt that was horrible and I am sorry I stayed with them that long. I’ve done much better on my own using mostly ETF’s. I’m getting performance now around 9-10%+, having about 50% in MMF and 50% in equities. I’m glad I got away from his old company, Merriman-Berkman Next (back in 2008). Tim G.

What’s your take on a portfolio with 75% VTI and 25% BLV. I should comment that I know in the short term the long bond will go down because of increasing interest rates but I’m thinking long-term 20 to 30 years horizon is that I’ll make more money with the long bonds. I did a back test with portfolio visualizer and it seems like this had the same or better protection against bear markets as short term bonds and intermediate, reducing volatility, but yet almost the same return as 100% stocks. it even beat 100% VTI during the "lost decade" in 2000 to 2010. Thus with a long horizon I think BLV taking a hit in the short term with inevitable increases in interest rates, in the span of a couple or three decades would be a winner. what do you think?

Thank you Rob for the great content! I've subscribed to your channel and love it actually, esp the tools you use to analyze portfolios.
Here's my portfolio in a taxable account. I'm being charged 0.75% for management fees on this actively managed portfolio, although I'm learning it's way better to go with passive investment using index funds.
Total value of the portfolio is 70K, I'm 40 and shooting to retire at 55.
I'd appreciate if you'd analyze my portfolio.
    Thank you

Listening to this, I can't help but think similar thoughts to your S&P index investing is for losers video. Just like with any diversified investment strategy, you will never be #1 on any given timeline, but you will also never be the worst and historically this fund allocation has outperformed in the long term.
On a more macro consideration, I have the expectation the Value tilt looks good in the coming few years.

When using the Vanguard platform, which funds are recommended for international large-cap value and international small-cap value? Vanguard doesn’t seem to have their own index funds in these asset classes. Thanks. Well done.

    • @rob_berger
      @rob_berger  3 роки тому +1

For large cap: investor.vanguard.com/mutual-funds/profile/VTRIX. I don't believe they have a inter'l small cap value fund. You could look at PDN, but it's more of a mid-cap.

How does the Paul Merriman Ultimate Buy and Hold Portfolio MS 9-box stock style compare to a portfolio comprised of Vanguard Total Stock Market Index and Vanguard Total International Stock Index having the same proportion of US stocks to foreign stocks? I assume based upon this video that it would be tilted to value and small compared to the market.

Oh wow another 10 vanguard fund balanced portfolio. You mean just another copy of the Gone Fishing Portfolio.
A buy and hold forever portfolio just doesn't jive with every other video you've done on not trying to live off dividends. Anything you are buying and holding the only thing you can ever spend are dividends otherwise you aren't forever holding.
