- Oil and Filter Change on a Sportster!
The Man Cave is now complete! Now the learning is put into practice - this is just the start with more custom work and maintenance to do.

Just a little tip, next time you do a service, after you put the new oil in, always take the drain plug back out until you see the clean oil run through. Then plug it back in. This stops any possible cavitation happening. 👍
appreciate the tip!
I just learned a new word!! 😎
Great video. Lovely to see someone who is modest, thought you did an awesome job. Love the flooring.
Good achievement there mate 👍. Move that tub under oil filter though, the towel never gets it all 😁👍.
Stay safe 🤙
Great job. Doing your own maintenance feels fantastic!!
Hey throw a tube or wrench on the handle of you’re ratchet to extend the length of that handle.
Leverage is your friend........ you won’t have to struggle and fight with a super tight filter, or nut, or bolt.
Nice bike brother!
Cheers, its good to see you getting more confident with your bike, good lad.
Mark, just a little heads up. Don't leave nearly full bottles of oil on the floor without putting the lid back on. It will make a nice mess of your new floor if you inadvertently give it a kick.
Totally get that feeling of working on you're own stuff, just changed the transfer and gearbox on my defender! And re the metallic particles, I use a magnetic sump plug on the landy to catch that stuff and stop it going back through. Not sure if bikes have the same thing!!! Love the vlog as always!
Lol time to get the dipstick and I'm not talking about myself. Thanks for the laugh and good work.
Well done Mark 👊 To be able to service your own bike gives a much joy. I’ve read most of the instruction manual before I got on my Thunder. Like you’ve said -Follow the instructions and you cannot go wrong with that 🙌 peace 👍
Nice one like the man cave job well done.
Nicely done
Mark , a oil service on any Harley-Davidson can be performed with the bike sitting on its jiffy stand , I only use my lifts for serious cleaning , or removing wheels . Buy a service manual for any bigger jobs . Regular services are covered in the owners manual , along with torque specs . Wrench on , ride safe , don't be scared to work on your machine .
Got a service manual bro. Your absolutely right though. I was just excited to use it. 😂. Jist changed the rear shocks so I'm enjoying the wrenching 🔧.
Thanks to you , and some of your mates , I have gotten hooked on Sportster Sickness , and now a member , you guys in the UK are doing this right , considering your tough , and restricted motorcycle laws , you guys are rocking this . Thanks for the collective great vlogs , and ride safe .
Yeah, that’s right, although you will need your lift to change your primary transmission oil, great job and good luck, beautiful bike!
@@pawelklaman1900 I own two Big Twins , and two Sportsters, I have never once had to use a lift to chance any fluids , on any of the eleven Harley's I have owned , my V-Rod filter was harder to get to than my others , ride , and be safe , cheers .
sluf1963 sorry, didn’t mean to sound like an expert, I own only one sportster, the meaning was that to fill transmission fluid and check it’s level, the bike must be upright, but of course you are free to do it your own way. Ride safe
Great job man for sure. I just started doing my own engine, primary and transmission fluid changes this year and I am much like you I am totally new to working on my bike. But in the end, does it not make you feel better and more connected to your bike? You have an amazing bike also. Ride Safe
That's a good point. For me it's about learning a new skill that gives me the enjoyment and quite right as you say it brings you closer to the machine.
Do you have a link for those 2" diameter fat bars. Are those 14" or 16"?? Btw thanks for all the great info and inspiration from this channel
Great video! Like allways. I really love the video’s of the sportsters.
Can you tell me where I can find a pdf of the service manual?
Thnx and greetings from the Netherlands
I downloaded from Sportster Sickness UK page on Face Book.
@@Motonewbrider Thanks!
Hi Mark - Great vid as always thankyou. I wondered where did you get your rear fender from? Am looking for something pretty much identical..... roll on freedom!
Rear fender came from Rick's Harley Davidson Germany
Beautiful bike!!!
Just another little tip for you dude. When you are putting fresh oil on the filter seal, pull it out of the filter and do both sides. Makes sure seal didn’t grab anywhere that way. 👍🏼
Always cool to do your own work but I don't have the tools or time to get into working on my bike so I am good taking it to the dealership.
Well done .
good job, dude!
You did so good!
Well done man , great video. Love that man cave, well done. If u don't mind me asking where did u get those floor tiles and also the logo from? Keep up the awesome work !!
Garagestyleltd buddy in uk.
@@Motonewbrider thanks buddy :) take care of yourself through all this..
Wicked Setup..
Great effort. 👍
Good job! I think someone put the filter, you removed, on a wee bit tighter than required. I do hope you have been following ShadeTree Surgeon...lol Cheers!
The seals probably expanded a bit due to oil and heat
@@Saixtanwar that's what I thought. Or 2 weeks away from the gym is effecting me already.
Give it a tap first m8
Wonkie donkie, is that some sort of new Harley slang😅😅, it's cute but in all my years ridding scooters I've not heard it although after watching hours of "million dollar Bogan" youtube , I've heard a whole new language😄! Maranatha, Greetings From Tampa Florida😎
LOL yeah that's some of my lingo. Greetings to you sir in sunny florida :)
Awesome brother 💯✌️😎
My 2020 Manual says change oil and filter on jiffy stand. So that’s not upright on stand. Oil tank may drain more leaning left? As would the oil filter housing?
Sharp lesson plan !!!!!
Hey nice job bro, can you list out the mods you have done on your sporty?
Never mind, i found your phat g reveal video 😁🤘🏽
sai tidy! Glad you found it.
Awesome!!!!
What handlebar you have? I looks great.
Is it 14" or 16"?
@@basstradamus1 16 inch buddy and 1.5 thick custom built.
@@Motonewbrider thanks. Few more questions (I'm in the process of searching right apes).
Is it comfortable to ride 100 miles distance?
How tall are you?
Could you drop me a contact to the company which builds such bars?
🔥🔥
What handle bars are those?
This could present issues with claiming on your warranty if servicing your own bike in the warranty period, imagine you’ll have a good relationship with your dealership so might not affect you but may others
TBH i've not heard of any dealerships UK wide that have pushed back on a warranty claim if proof of right oils purchased etc are produced in the warranty period. I am only peforming an oil change and not a 1,000 mile or 5,000 mile service. Not to sure what it's like further afield from the UK though.
Motonewbrider I’m in the uk and don’t know outside of it really, although this is a European ruling, but I work in the motor trade and know of people having had a knock back on their warranties because they have missed services. Think it’s important that people understand it. On a lighter note wasn’t expecting you to answer so you’ve made my day 👍👍
I full service my 2019 Speed Twin and 2018 Sports Glide from new but have a friend who is a bike mechanic to sign the service book to keep warranty
Jim Bea always handy having that type of friend👍👍
@@jimmybe64 lol that's a good friend 👍
Simple as that.
Mark its great your doing stuff with phat G, a like all your content Harley related 👍🏻
That’s why a got hooked on the sportster, have you checked out moonfleet 41
Delboys garage there’s a lot of Harley content on there he knows his stuff 👍🏻
All the best keep safe 🇬🇧🍺👍🏻
First channel I subscribed too many years ago. Del Boys a legend with the sportster how 2's.
@@Motonewbrider there a lot better them Del Boy. In fact, take everything he says with a huge grain of salt. I made the mistake of thinking he knew what he was talking about. He is one of those people who don't know what they are doing but talk bullshit as if they do. Don't use ATF in a Sportster's primary, gearbox like Dell Boy said is a good idea. He is only learng like you but makes out he knows everthing. This man is so knowledgeable ua-cam.com/video/hRmk7e-A3nI/v-deo.html.
@@Motonewbrider Tony Cox is a lot better.ua-cam.com/video/BUVdyazfxSc/v-deo.html
Jim Bea
Just checked out Tony cox had never herd of the man but hey worth a look
Cheers for that keep safe in this unpredictable world all the best 🇬🇧🍺👍🏻
Ride that puppy prior to oil change to get everything into suspension at operating temp, idling won't do that.
Well done you! My only suggestion is using a larger ratchet when removing the oil filter, larger tool gives you more leverage and makes it so much easier, not a criticism only a little tip.
Your bike is awesome btw, I watched the series on building it, and no matter how often I see it it still amazes me. Bloody Stunning!!!!!
Appreciate the tip!
@@Motonewbrider longer breaker bar. www.kincrome.com.au/flex-handle-1-2d-600mm-24-mp
That filter should not be that tight getting off 🤔
But when you fist service them new or secondhand they are. Why other people tighten them so much I don't know.
