Great video. In the early 1960s I put new heads on bongos using the same method following the advise from my drum teacher EWB III. Bought the unmounted heads from Silver and Horlands drum shop on lower 3rd Avenue in Manhattan, NYC. Sounded so good a guy traded a quinto congo for them. Own LP bongo at present.

Just got 2 LP skins for Christmas! I had no idea what to do, but thanks to your video, I got them on and drying with very little trouble. (good thing I did the larger one first as I made a mistake and was able to salvage it and re-use it on the smaller head).
Thanks for the tutorial - Short and to the point. Excellent source!

Excellent idea to start the job with 'La Hembra'(the big one)and, then, to fix 'El Macho (small one).We all,one day or the other, have spoiled a skin.As I had the opportunity, long time ago, to listen to Mongo Santamaria and Armando Perrazza(,my uncle's friends) playing very very complicated and very very good on a single tumba or quinto,I know realise that the main reason why some percussionist buy a five pièces conga-set is that it gives them 4 possibilities to reuse the same skin!!! Unfortunately,The problem remains to look for (and buy) a new skin for 'La Hembra' that can be tuned with a thicker 'Macho' skin.Anyway,it 's very often possible.... and what a pity to throw a good new skin away! Xmas father ( or las Orichas) could have blame you for doing this. Take care and have fun mounting skins and playing bongoes. ACHE

That demonstration was exceedingly informative for me and you have my respect for that. Can anyone direct me to more info about the percussion instrument with the stick hanging on the inside please while excusing my ignorance on the matter.

This video clearly couldn't be better made! (From LP,what could you expect..)Good shooting and very complete explanations, very clearly stated, lots of détails you surely wouldn't have thougt of before having mounted lot of skins on différents hand drums.I'm now 64,never been a professionnal but started at the age of 12 to observe and help my uncle to make hand drums from bongos to congas to batas..in his garage ( He so became a friend of Mongo Santamaria,Armando Perazza,Ray Barreto,Changito and many many others great percussionists)No need to be very handskilled or very strong.Try to do it by yourself ..No doubt that this video will be a perfect help for bigginers .If you just follow this video, you can't fail Unless I do considered'selling already ringged'skins is a very good idea,I do encourage any percussionnist (whatever his level his strenth, his handskill) to,at least once in a life, mount a new skin (raw skin is better) on a conga,bongo...shell or drum he will play later (or,better,.very soon)..What a pleasure it is to feel the wet skin in hands ,to see tiny water drops getting out of it,to smell it,to notice how much sound changes during the skin drying .I told you,it's a pleasure that could only be compared to the one of playing hand drum.Without offensing LP people (cause these worlds have been used by onother good brand) 'Skin on skin',these were Mongos'worlds',and may I add skin on wood ? (As 'The Master'was able to make much much more music,to produce much more different sounds on a stool than some 'gifted' percusionists on a five well tuned congas set,I also had the opportunity to meet.!!! DEEP CONGRATULATIONS FROM FRANCE. .For me,THIS VIDEO IS REALLY THE ONE. TO SEE

Good informative presentation - I would just like to know if anyone can offer me advice as when I am tuning my newish LP bongoes, especially on the macho, one pair of opposite lugs need tightening so much more than the other pair on which the nuts are barely past the end. I have tried turning the head and rim around but am still trying to offset the position of the lugs so that one is next to the block joining the two drums to keep it comfortable to play while sitting, Any help would be really appreciated,

Maybe you're right (posible que tiene razon..)but what exactly do you mean by fixing much better? You do it faster, you better choose your skins, you always know the precise sound you will get before mounting a skin on a shell?you have much more experience because you spend more time to change skins than to play hand drums?Maybe you are more gifted than he's,why not after all? The fact is that,as I said previously, this Young guy knows how to do it ,He is very clear when stating how to do it,he gives us lots of détails I wouldn't probably have though of.He doesn't tell us it's difficult (and,I do agree!) .He doen't polute camera shooting. So Mr good looking Georges Clooney, from a Young LP specialist, what did you expect???That's sufficent for me,(an old 64 years old guy who had the great pleasure at the age of 12 to observe and help my uncle when he made congas for his friendsManos Mongo,Armando,Ray,Changuito..,who,lately, met Gordoba in Havana to observe how he made my own bongoes .Manos fuertes y cabeza que no permite llevar sombrero (demaciado grande) Mucho Ache a ti 'Yo soy el unico,yo soy el terrooooor,yo soy el mejooor'.Por favor'.Sigue montando pieles antes quel sonido de la hembra no deje expresarse al macho PS;Puede ser que la gente del Sr Martin COHEN estan buscando a aguien que tiene conocimiento.Quien sabe?

Hello man.Sorry to have been a bit rude with you.My apologises for my ridiculous comment about the way you dress on your picture as ,function of where I personnaly have to live,I realise that I have myself been dressing like a businessman or a native Tahitian.( When in Havana,I didn't dress in Tropicana like I did in La Tropical or Los Pinos or Pogoloti) But,back to Bongoes...I'm happy to be informed that you already mounted Xrays fims on the Macho.I remember to have played Cuban'so mounted' bongoes. They sounded so fantastic (when plated by Cubans,of course) ...so,when back to France I had (I really couldn't help me..)tried to mount one Xray sheet on my own macho. ( Using a double speed electrical hair-heater).,then,in order to get an even sharper,I did it with a very nice looking transparent blue plastic
