  • A walk around 2022 Pride of Longbridge show, POL is the biggest all Rover event in the universe. I took my 1993 220 Coupe, and parked with Quentin the convertible but there was much more to see.

Do you know what I love about this, apart from the cars of course, is that in between the Mr Furious commentary the microphone picks up random words from nearby people.
    “Here’s a nice tourer” ... “sausage roll”
“Lovely leather interior” ... “Yeah, window wiper”

My Dad worked at Longbridge for 42 years.. He saw lots of changes obviously. He hated Red Robbo and his cronies.. i remember him saying to my Mum ...i just want to go to work ...... Luckily he took early retirement at 63. whilst in BMW ownership. so escaped the nightmare of the Fab Four. and had a nice pension for the rest of his days.. Bless him... he would've loved walking round this show...

I worked at Longbridge as well started off in the west works then ended up in cab 1&2. I also left before the phoenix 4 took over. When BMW pulled out anyone with half a brain could see the company was on its last legs. I took my voluntary redundancy and left that sinking ship that was Rover. Good job as well as two years after me leaving the place went bust. I remember the old stubborn boys who’d been there years thinking I was mad for leaving asking why I was taking my redundancy at just 21 and I said to them Rovers days were numbered but they just wouldn’t have it, and they say “this place will never shut down, Rover will be here forever” how ignorant and clueless they was, because my warnings too them fell on typical deaf Rover workers ears. I took my redundancy of 8k and went back packing around Australia and Asia. In fact I was in Australia when I heard that Rover had gone into liquidation. I remember watching it on the news the other side of the world at my uncles house, in the Australian heat, next too his swimming pool, thinking “who’s laughing now” terrible shame the place went bust, but the writing was on the wall for years. Management and workforce at constant war with each other, Unions doing its best to trip management up the place was diseased with bad work practices and under investment. Ironically it was the likes of Red Robbo and the Unions that caused all the damage that contributed towards Rover going bust. Even BMW said Rover as a company is unworkable. Militant unionism destroyed that company.

As you walked round the show it made me miss two cars I've owned a silver 214 and the one I miss the most my trophy blue zs 120, the latter I had to give up due to change in circumstances.
I went to Longbridge several times when it was in full swing as I was controls engineer at Perkins Eng, and would be a guest of a machine tool manufacturer. Great shame its gone last time I was there the were TFs everywhere.

@@stevenmanning6884 yeh I had a Rover 216SLi but with the 1.6 Honda engine, but the Rover K series was actually a really good engine bullet proof. The only reason why the head gaskets kept blowing wasn’t down to K series design flaw, it was because Rover in their quest too save money brought in thousands of cheap head gaskets from China, which means when you revved the engine too much especially the K series that was a real revvy engine they kept blowing the head gaskets. As soon as they started fit quality British head gaskets, it solved that problem overnight. But yes the 200 and 400 were actually decent cars. My dad had a Rover 420 turbo diesel and that thing went like the clappers. I think at the time one of the fastest turbo diesels on the road. And the Rover Tomcat Turbo did 0 to 60mph in 6 seconds, that’s Cosworth territory..

This was such a lovely day, and a really wonderful atmosphere. The Triumph Acclaim is mine. Thank you for the compliments, it's quite a thrill to see my own car on the channel. It was watching your road test of an Acclaim last year that actually inspired me to buy one of my own, and it's absolutely marvellous. Love it to bits.

Don’t you mean your Honda Ballade?
Nothing Rover about the Acclaim except the interior.
But, yes a beautiful car nonetheless. And a good period colour.
My Mum had a white Ballade 1500.
      Excellent car indeed.

I did see you but didnt say hi as you were looked in the motion with your camera, this is my local show as I live in Longbridge. I felt quite bare as the last time the show was on in 2019 I had my P6, now albeit a Focus Mk1 in bits on the drive ha. I was tempted by so many cars for sale including the early Montego 1.6 Estate on the trailer of which there are only 3 left and up for sale. Great video as always!

We had a Sherpa we used as the band van in the early 80's. Body was pretty much held together with pop rivets. I remember while driving to a practice about 1982 the bass player in the back shouting, "Shit! We've just lost a wheel arch" as it as disappeared down the road behind us... . Scary thing was that the loss allowed us to see that the U Bolts holding the body on weren't connected!

Cool stuff, FD!!!! As an Anglophile Yankee Motorhead with adequate knowledge of British cars, this is a magnificent tutorial on all the Rover (and MG) nuiances. I've always loved the SD1 / 3500, and only have seen one in my life, I can recall....a yellow one in Toronto in 1983 on the downtown expressway in a traffic jam. Though thanks to Corgi, I was able to own a few juniors models. Coulda, woulda, shoulda been....I always think of the potential of those cars in our market. I wasn't aware of the MG ZT. I wasn't following cars much at the turn of the milennium, and was unaware that not only was a Ford Mustang engine shoved into the engine bay, but it was re-engineered for rear-wheel drive. As these cars go on 25 years old and thus eligible to enter the US under a "25-year-old waiver" rule, it is darn tempting to import one! Thanks for this absolutely delight of a walkaround! Even the latest MG models, despite the obvious debate over "real or not", are a welcome sight to my eyes. These may be "MG in name only", but they are very interesting vehicles as I have seen in your demos.

My first decent car, after a Mini Clubman Estate & a Fiesta Mk 1.1L was a black MG Maestro 2.0 EFi, loved it. Oh the memories!
Next was a Rover Metro Gti, one of the first pre MPi ones, followed by a 220 GTi Hatch, my last Rover was a Amaranth 216 GSi known as Purple Ronnie.
Watching this makes me want to go back and get a Tomcat Turbo....

Wow you found my old Rover SD1, CPD109Y, it used to be a 2300 when I owned it but has now been converted to a V8. I spotted it for sale on ebay a while ago. Interesting history on that car, it was meant to be an Australian export car but it never made it out there. Wish I had never sold it all those years ago for £800 🥺 Thanks for a great walk around 👍

Rovers used to be my favourite. In 1991 I got a brand new 414 GSi in red/grey as a company car (there was another option of a Montego or a Cavalier), I loved the electric sun roof as I'd never had one before. When I left the job I bought a blue Rover 216 (the previous model) and then upgraded to a 414 SLi in racing green, I never had any trouble with any of them really well made cars.

You did very well to cram all that into 46 minutes Matt.
The Rover 800 coupe is a stunning car, a former work colleague of mine used to have a dark blue 820 turbo coupe.
I love an SD1, especially the Series 2 versions, a timeless design much like the P6. I personally think the P5B is the most beautiful saloon car ever made regardless of saloon or coupe, there is no other car that can match it's majesty.
I think one of the highlights of this video for me was the gold R8 216 GSi with leather interior and lattice alloys. 🤤😍🤤
I love all the Rover accessories the R3 owners had. That under parcel shelf storage is very similar to the one I had in a MK2 Clio many years ago.
Well the Tomcat had its day at POL so hopefully the 420 GSi tourer will be the chariot of choice for the Motorist next month.

Great walk round video. I'm amazed how little time many cars spent at the show. About half had left by midday even though the weather was good. I'd hoped that there would be some more MG/Rover auto jumble. As usual, it's the people and cars that make the event but a bit more organisation would really improve it. Unfortunately the venue, whilst chosen for understandable reasons, is not brilliant if there's any rain for about two weeks prior. This means the show can cancel at almost no notice and could be why it's hard for organisers, trade stands or even exhibitors, to commit to it in advance. Although it might be sad in some ways, perhaps choosing a more reliable venue to celebrate all these great cars might be worth considering.

Absolutely nice to have a video like this. These cars surely show us what MGs were like back then. Hopefully SAIC to work on restoring MG's motoring culture but have to admit we need to... "move with the times of the SUV era as well as electrification" which I personally don't like. If we really do need to electrify, hope SAIC to come up with an modern iconic shape of MG sports car. I don't mind electrification now but as long as we can do it with style. Nice to have modernised classic MG B EV, MG TF EV and such.
For the "Save our Zeds" team, I wish I can really help you as my suggestion for SAIC is NOT to use MG for the current ZS. Since SAIC have also acquired the Morris name, why not use the Morris instead of MG on the ZS SUV with a different model name such as Morris Marina SUV (or something). The only current ZS I do like is the ZS EV, the only current ZS that have balls.
Even though we've got our ZS EV after watching older ZSes as well as some older MGs, I started to realise how much I've missed out. After watching this vid, I'm amazed with the show in this vid. It deepens my worry of the MG badge so my only "redemption" of our ZS EV is to... accelerate off traffic lights and drive quietly. Put it this way, I wonder what is (SAIC) MG doing? Where is it going? Are we going to forget what MGs were truly like in the future? Are we going stray into a wrong path deeply (or so)? I still have concerns of losing MG heritage even though I'm happy with the ZS EV.

What an amazing collection at that meet. You certainly had your work cut out for you, Matt. Well done indeed. Of the lot, the blue over blue Morris Oxford caught my eye as did the bright yellow Humber Sceptre. We got the Hillman Minx version of the Sceptre over here. An aunt and uncle had one. I really did like that car. I've always dreamed of taking a P6 and working modern magic on the engine to get the fuel consumption down to a reasonable amount for the size (small) of engine and the size (also small) of the car itself. If I can get 40 mpg out of a 5.8 litre Grand Marquis, something close to that should be doable out of a 3½ litre V8 in a smaller, lighter car.

100% agree the pre-facelift 75 and ZT are way better looking, they did a good job of the 45/ZS facelift but the quality of the design (and fitment) of the new bumpers/lights to the ZT/75 looks cheap

I have to say I’m not sure about the backend of the facelift 45 - you wouldn’t find me in one.

Hi. I watched your Pride of Longbridge video with interest. Really enjoyed seeing all those lovely Rovers, a brand I was very familiar with. I didn’t see any Rover 213/216 SD3’s?? Was there any?? Is this model not regarded a true Rover? Is there too much Honda influence here for the Rover purest?? Thanks. Really enjoy your channel

4:53 I think the Amaranth may have distracted you from the most interesting thing going on in that engine bay, haha. Pretty sure that engine was not a standard Rover option!

@@pastytit Yup, having had plenty of turbo Saabs in the past as well as a couple of late 200's, the thought of one of those Saab turbo lumps in something as small as a bubble is... yeah, that's going to be a handful, haha. Would love to know a bit more about that car.

It's interesting to work out the models that weren't apparently there - someone else has mentioned CityRover but no Austin A30's, A35's A40's or Nash Metropolitans? Original three box Rover 200's very rare (one I spotted was actually a Honda Ballade?) and no Honda Concertos? Metro/100 convertibles? Metro vans?

matt the seats in that moggy are from a ford ka, a popular upgrade, and the car between the moggy and the sherpa is an austin 10 i think

The blue Rover estate at 35:44 seems to have Suzuki Jimny wheels, the whole car looks great, I like that Nardi steering wheel as well.

Matt have you seen the £100 MG that Rob and Chris bought on Salvage rebuilds UK?
It will be sold soonish and would fit lovely in your fleet.
