For me this part of the museum is the best bit. All of the first/last cars & concept cars show what an amazing car industry we had & what we could have done. When i visited i saw the ‘tunnel mini’ but when i looked over the balcony at the worshop i saw the Jaguar E-type driven by Norman Dewis to the Geneva motor show! It was in pieces but i could clearly see the plaque on the console & the reg of 77 RW.

    Oh the memories flood back.
When my grandfather owned the family garage he bought a new Austin Champ,
I can't remember if it was bought as a tow wagon. or he built it that way.
I must have been about 6 years old at the time, (now 76) I must have been in my late 30s when my father sold it, everything still working well with way over a million miles under it's belt.
    The damn thing was indestructible

11:10 - that's an AR6 prototype from 1986-87, designed by Roy Axe as a Metro replacement. Lack of funds instead saw the Metro being dragged kicking & screaming into the 90's with the K series engines.

I used to be a commercial Loss Adjuster - in the mid-noughties I dealt with a claim for a damaged Krypton engine tuning machine ( bloke reversed with its still attached to a car and it fell into his garage pit ) - thing was he was a classic car garage and restorer so modern stuff wouldn't suit his 60's or 70's cars that he dealt with. Couldn't find anyone to repair it nor anyone to supply one in the UK. In the end - and at some cost - we tracked one down in the Netherlands got it shipped over and though it had some faults with the remains of his scrap one he managed to get a serviceable unit

@@furiousdriving It was that or a guy restoring a FIAT Toplino and a FIAT Dino Spider ( wedding present for his daughter ) amongst other classics would have gone out of business Matt. It was a great job - I went to a workshop that did 1920's Blower Bentley's in North Yorkshire too - commercial was so much more interesting than domestic Adjusting - lets face it we all have a kitchen that could be damaged I don't have a Topolino lol

But really who needs those old "tune-up" machines for actually working on old cars? I always just saw them as expensive advertising back in the day, like "Oi, bring your car to us, we don't rely on our eyes and ears to set your car up, we have this fancy new machine to do that!"

That "Ghost" is a Phantom 7......Also, that part of the museum isn't hidden, it's easily accessible to everyone. But nice video. The red "competition Maxi" is actually an 1800 'landcrab'...bigger than a Maxi. The blue hatchback was an initial thought on replacing the Allegro, before the final LC/LM10 shape was signed off.

Those PM P5b's look like pre armoured ones, maybe one or both Wilson, the larger ashtray for his pipe would be the give away. Each PM had a few so had one at the destination when using the train or a plane for travel around the UK, plus a couple of spare ones. As far as I know all the later armoured ones were scrapped, first built for Thatcher, not sold off at auction like normal Home Office cars, so wouldn't fall into the wrong hands. The lightweight Chobham armour was still classified and top secret when they were withdrawn, it's still used on the modern Jags. The doors weighed a lot, the armoured glass being very heavy, shutting a hand in a door would chop it off.

could that metallic blue thing towards the end be a styling concept for the Maestro? The side windows ( aside from the uptick on the front ones ) look like styling cues for the Maestro to me

I thought I recognised L816WAC Defender 90 V8 NAS. In 1995 I drove it from our LR Dealership in Falmouth back to Coventry as GUL Wetsuits borrowed it fro a photoshoot. It's biggest drawback apart from being LHD was it was limited to 70mph! Which was still 3rd gear. Also remember the alloy polished S3 at the 1984 Royal Cornwall Show.

I last visited here in 2019. I remember that slab fronted Mini used as a mule. Behind it at the time of my visit was the most enormous 1940s/50s vintage era car I had ever seen. Don't think it was a Rolls Royce or Bentley, it might have been a Daimler.
My favourite in the hall is the white Montego (unremarkably!) but I was fascinated with the Triumph/Rover SD2 prototype. I could elements of FSO Polonez and Citroen BX in it. Seeing it just now in this video there's even a bit of Renault 16 in there also.

Great video, very interesting. Couple of things - the Land Rover body wasn't made from aluminium, it was made from 'birmabright', which is an aluminium alloy (pedantic I know). The Dolomite 'prototype' is, I believe, a restyled/updated version, which might have replaced the original Dolomite range - a Mk2, if you like. I think it was canned because it would have been dated at launch. Fairly sure I remember seeing articles on it in the 1980s

I'm surprised that you did not recognise the Daimlers by the crinkly tops on the radiators. THIS was, in effect, the badge. There was no need of the brand name on a badge until well after WW2, though some cars received plated wheel centre caps with a curly "D" embossed in them.

Hi Matt I wanted to ask your opinion. I’ve got a 2005 MG ZR. 105. I have just bought a genuine. Mg rover cam belt kit. I’m debating doing it myself but nerves are getting the better of me , i need to replace the Saab valve and thermostat at the same time. So getting all that done isn’t cheap . I have fairly good basic skills, but I’d be furious if I ruined it. What do you think ?

That's a Vauxhall Viva HC, the Firenza has a similar front end but a coupe style rear, at least the British version had 😁 I lived in Luton through the 70s where they were built, the Vivas were 2 a penny but Firenzas were fairly rare even then.

The collection is still being built up. Keep in mind the fact that it was originally a BL collection, which is why it's exhibits are still heavily oriented in that direction. Certainly, the collection has expanded significantly over the years, not that I get to see it all that frequently - last three times were in 2014/'17/'19 - as it's a long-ish trip from Australia!
