If you've ever seen the old HBO movie about the Tuskegee Airmen starring him, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Malcolm-Jamal Warner, and Laurence Fishburne, his turn as the lead officer for the squadron is absolute gold too. He was a fantastic actor, and I never knew how funny he could be until Brooklyn-99.

Matthew Broderick's youthful look ABSOLUTELY works with this character so well! He doesn't look like that gritty officer and it helps so many people feel like they can really empathize with him particularly through those letters.

IMO, Glory is the best American Civil War movie and one of the greatest films ever made! RIP Andre Braugher 99!❤Also I just wanted to say at 29:29 when Thomas saves Trip from that rebel, he doesn't shoot, he bayonets him. Trivial I know, but I had to say it.

Saw this in middle school for US History. Incredible performances, especially from Denzel. Powerful movie.

the drill sergeant had gotten the men's respect, and they received his. I never thought he was racist against them...they had no idea at all about being soldiers and he had to get them into shape. he salutes them during the parade scene.

For the sake of historical accuracy, pretty much everyone were racist back then, including most abolitionists as well as Abe himself. They were against the inhumane and barbaric practice of slavery, but they most certainly didn't see African Americans as being equal. This is why Lincoln, who is in modern day American mythology - seen as a highly principled anti-racist who ended slavery, in fact was staunchly against abolishing slavery and was actually forced due a number of factors, (including being constantly hounded by actual abolitionists), to make the formal abolition of slaves part way through the Civil War. So technically speaking, he most certainly was racist, (especially when u factor in how he was Irish - who were known for being the most universally racist demographics in the US at the time). That said, he wasn't anymore racist than any of the white officers, and deliberately was going overboard with it in order to break down the soldiers he was training so as to build them back up again, just like modern day drill sergeants do in militaries around the world, (just maybe not the overtly racist tinge).

When I was 9 years old, I watched this film on Filmnet. That was in the late '80s and early '90s, a movie channel you could access through a decoder. This channel showcased a monthly selection of films, including the 1989 movie Glory.
Partly influenced by series like North and South, I was completely captivated by the American Civil War. Glory was an impressive addition to that fascination. As a child, this film left a profound impression on me.
Using Playmobil, I recreated the attack on Fort Wagner. Due to a lack of black soldiers, I painted the black Playmobil figures blue.
Crafting Robert Shaw was less challenging for me; I added a goatee beard below his chin to his Playmobil version and painted a golden trumpet on his hat. I spent days reenacting this battle. Sometimes the Unionists won, and sometimes the Confederates. In the background, I played Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana." There are some similarities between James Horner's music and Carl Orff's Carmina Burana during Shaw's death and the ultimate failure of the attack. This allowed me to process the entire history with music and Playmobil for myself.
This film still deeply moves me, and its story will always stay with me. A quote from Morgan Freeman captures it best: the war was not glorious; it was horrifying, but the glory lay in the fact that the men of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment who attacked Fort Wagner truly wanted to be there despite the horrors.
To you, Gary and Iain, I want to compliment you on the incredibly enjoyable reviews you provide. I savor every conversation you have. Keep up the good work! Greetings from the Netherlands.

I love coming into one of your reviews for a film I haven't seen. It amazes me how many times I've been hesitant to watch a review because I didn't know the movie, yet I come out of these reviews feeling like I sat thru the whole thing alongside you guys. Thank you for shedding a light on these lesser known classics. Great review guys!

It always tickles me when they seem so hesitant to give away plot points. Ill happily watch a 30 min review of them explaining a movie, over watching the movie itself, especially if I haven't seen the movie. Watch Glory though, it's excellent.

This is a weird one for me. It's an amazing, uplifting, and yet tragic story based on actual events. Well written, well acted and well directed with 2 of the greatest actors of all time (Morgan and Denzel). Plus, I love military history and have read about the American civil war many times.
And yet despite all that, I don't like this movie. I think it's because I've never liked Matthew Broderick as an actor, and even though he plays the part well I just can't see past him. I would loved to have seen someone a lot more 'edgy' in the part. Someone like Rutger Hauer for example, would have brought a very different tone to the movie. Oh well, it just goes to show that you can't please all of the people all of the time! 😃

    • @chrisnotyou
      @chrisnotyou 5 місяців тому +5

Col Shaw was just a boy though. Really. He was very young IRL. Hardly old enough to be edgy or hardened. Broderick sold it well. Many times you'll have a "baby face" In a position of authority in reality. As the old adage goes, you don't have to respect the man, but you do have to respect the rank. He embodies that well I believe. Certainly seems like someone you might not take seriously just because of his soft demeanor. Plus he does look an awful like the real Robert Shaw.

Saw this movie with my parents when I was a teenager. My Dad said during the flogging scene that it was totally justified and disciplined. Caused a major row because I defended Denzels character. Sad to say that if it came out today it would consumed by the whole woke/anti woke nonsense that poisons so much entertainment now rather than acknowledging the great movie and performances all round. Speaking of greatness, thanks for another fantastic review.

Has Denzel Washington EVER been in a bad movie?? Seriously. I 've seen a bunch of them, and even his weakest movies are watchable and somewhat entertaining at least. Man obviously has a great agent, and super instincts when it comes to picking projects he will do next.

Honestly, this is one of the few characters Matthew Broderick played where I thought his performance was spot on. Lately, he tends to phone it in, sadly. Anyway, wonderful film and cast. It is a great approach to tell those real events while carrying a message, was a turbulent period of United States history, and the movie presents many connotations that persist until this day, you get invested in those characters that in the end represent real people that played an important role in the course of history
