At the angle it was laying we could not perceive the shadow due to the overhead light and it therefore looked flat, "erased". The liquid is a dye, it's just there as a visual aid so you can see what the laser is doing since the dye fills in the valleys that the first few passes with the laser cuts into the coin.

I think the operator isn't 100% familiar with the equipment, you can clean things with only minimal destruction of the actual metal underneath, you just have to know what settings to use in the software your laser is running.
I dont care for teachers that have power trips or thinking anything a student does when their trying, isnt amazing. Actual Hardwork & dedication as well as enjoyment in whatever the student is focused on is something that is whats truly special. No matter how small or big. For anyone wondering I'm pretty sure the coin is Greek 5 cents coint. They did not remove just the dust but the whole design on it. Greek coins have beautiful designs on them (as a Greek)
I was until a few years ago a chief engineer for a major food manufacturing company and I will tell you now we paid £750k per laser cleaning machine which is a slightly more developed version of this. The point is your class may not have appreciated it but industry will pay a lot of money for people with your mindset to innovate. Keep at it and your success will follow.
