I could see a transition from resort skiing to the backcountry, and would love to bring my kids and friends with me. Lift serviced skiing is great but it's a packaged, Disney-like version of a winter wilderness experience. A perfect day would be to climb through the quiet of snowy woods on a tech binding/boot and light ski, then descend through untracked snow. It's not about a big mountain free-ride and shouldn't be compared to this. Its about the experiencing the mountains and woods during winter. If only there were reasonable prices for kids gear, this could happen for parents before the feet stop growing.
People that do this need to take some safety precautions into their own hands, but there is terrain for any level of ambition and tolerance for risk. Props to skithewhites for showing the way.

Thanks for the great comment. @skithewhites rents gear for $50 a day and they sell all of their gear at a large discount at the end of the season so that might be the easiest way to get in the game. Ask Drummond about sizes and when he will unload the gear.
