We have some 30 amphibious ships that would make damn good Missile launching and gun platforms as that could free up dozens of Destroyers and the New Frigates for more important operations even when the fleet finally makes 350 ships. With plenty of room for gun mounts including the new 6 inch long range guns with a possible range of 150 miles once a hyper velocity shell is produced for it, (the amphibs are where they need to be when supporting our troops with big red ass Target bullseye on them) and the addition of the proper radars. The big ships could even be fitted with sonar domes and towed sonar. The ships are slow to begin with which is needed for hunting subs and require only the addition of torpedo tubes and Ascrock launchers. The ships already have plenty of deck space for operating scores of anti sub helicopters. ---- There is no reason for all our amphibious ships NOT to be folly combat capable to a Destroyers anti- air and sub Capability if not the full Cruisers anti ballistic missile suite. The larger ships are actually more damage resistant than the smaller Destroyers and FF's ships because of there size. After all the smaller DD's and CA's are made using the same hull plate thicknesses but have larger compartment volumes that obsorb warhead blasts better. Though the Amphibs would benefit by adding spall and blast curtains and more robust fire control systems. Most of which has already been added to some degree since the Brits lost so many Amphib ships in the Falklands, but a few more are needed. The point being? How much damage can a cruise missile do exploding in the middle of an empty docking well. IN all, we can get 30 or 40 brand new cheap Destroyers and mIssile Cruisers in only a few years without having to slap down even one keel plate in a shipyard. And we can stop wasting good Destroyers and Cruisers escorting defenseless Amphibious ships that could be full of thousands of troops and billions of dollars of vital equipment that need to be able to defend themselves in this new cruist missile weapons flooded world. ----- Even the fleet supply ships that are usually manned by civilians should be upgraded even if military crews have to be put aboard the ships. After all China knows that if they kill the supply transports, they can make the Carries Mission Dead and worthless. They could be converted into our next gen large surface combatants in a heart beat. Also, we need more VLS tubes, Mk 54 if possible (the ones installed on USS Zumwalt and her sister ships). These new VLS tubes are larger then standard US Navy Mk 41 tubes and therefore can fire larger missiles with longer ranges (something everybody agrees that we will need), or some smaller missiles can be quad packed (like ESSMs actually are on Zummy)... And yes, stop the Ford class at 4 carriers. At least until we get next gen platforms to fly off of them that have ranges above 1500 miles.
Not really, the days of ship to ship gunfire are over. For a Frigate one of the biggest surface threats they will face in waters like the Persian gulf are small high speed attack boats. Guns like the Oliver Hazard Perry's 76mm were not well suited for dealing with that threat. The 57mm is fast enough and has a good rate of fire and is perfect for dealing with small high speed gunboats.
