Evinrude 6hp outboard starter rope replacement How to replace your starter rope on your motor

- Today we replace a starter rope on a 1972 Evinrude outboard motor. I also create a little specialty tool to make the job go easier. Watch as we learn together. Should be very similar to Johnson motors with this style of start rope system.

Of all the repair videos I've used over the years for my tractors , cars and motorcycles, your video is the best I've ever seen. Concise, smart, well lit, easy to see and informative. Thank you! VERY Well done!!!

I just found this - I Agree - OMG AWSOME THANK YOU Sir 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 not hard to do at all !!!!! 🙏🙏
Excellent! :)
For those who are going metric, 5/16" is about 8 mm.
Sweet. Starting after 8 years sitting. First pull, the knot on the spring come off. This is so easy the way you did it. Thanks for the help.
Glad it helped!
Great job. The only thing that needs addition need is a manicure on that left thumb nail. As always love the attire. Your the guru man with lots of outboard wisdom. Bless you. Will need that outboard savie on my dad's 1957 Johnson 7 1/2 with a seized piston. Pray for me.

This was awesome and helped me a ton, thank you!!! This is my first outboard, 85 Johnson Seahorse 6HP. The chord is frayed a bit and I wanted to put a new one on before it caused me problems on the water. I had no idea how to do it, so your video was fantastic! I lucked out and had a large flat chisel that is hexed so I could put a wrench on it. My 14 year old was around to help, so I was able to make that work, but your tool idea was great!!! Just didn't have a bolt lying around :) Thanks again!!!!!!
Glad it helped!
Exactly 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Very clever, love it. Keep ‘em comin.
Funny, just picked up the same white sprayable grease. Awesome stuff.

Me too still sorting out it's issue
Good tips u always show ...cheers

So what do you do if you don’t have an angle grinder working to create the homemade piece? I’ve tried with screwdrivers but it just doesn’t get past 5-6 turns before slipping. It also sucks because I am solo.
Hi can you please do a video on the 9.9-15 Johnson evinrude pull rope replacement
ua-cam.com/video/WZ_M1vIIXdE/v-deo.html I did the rope on this one
Thanks my rope is on the way from marineengine.com
Nice video. Do you know if that plastic bendix is available?
Do a search on marineengine.com
One of the many WD-40 products that work great!
Greetings!!! tell me why there is no water from the hole in the exhaust ??? Motor 5 HP evinrud 1996 .What to look for???
Are we talking the tale tale pee hole or through the exhaust at the prop?
What mm thicknesses is the pull cord for a johnson 6hp?
Is it 3.5mm or 4mm?
I honestly don't remember. Check out marineengine.com. I'm sure it says on there.
I have a Johnson 4·5hp with a side mount pull start and the gear which engages the fly wheel is worn. The assembly production has been discontinued. Do you have any solutions
search for parts on ebay to see if anyone is parting one out.
Hi,
I have this motor and the recoiler is very loose and jiggle a bit like there is a top bushing that is missing or worn. Have you seen that and can you rebuild it?
It can all be taken apart, Look for the parts diagram on MarineEngine.com
What a great idea! Trying to wind that up with a screwdriver is a joke. The key is getting the proper knot on the pulley so it does not jam. On these models with the aluminum pulley there is an easy knot that is described in the manual that will never jam..
But, please don't put any sort of lube on that pinion spring or pulley...
Do you know where I could order every piece for the pull cord assembly
possibly marineengine.com or I would shop eBay
You don’t want to ever order every piece for for that starter! The spring alone is $107. Pinion gear on top, $35
A rebuild kit with most of the wear pieces used to be available, for ,less than $20, but is no longer available.
Hey, I have a 74 Johnson 6 hp. Getting water in the gear oil. What’s a good way to get the housing under the water pump off so I can replace the seal? It’s a high dollar item and I don’t want to break it. Appreciate your help.
I need to replace the pull cord on my 1973 Johnson 6HP after it broke with the previous owner. They couldn't find the old rope that broke so I need to know what length and cord diameter to use. Thanks
you can find starter rope on amazon and the length you can finalize after install.
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina I know that. That doesn't answer the question
@@claygraner4450 yes it does answer the question, you asked what diameter and length. I spent 30 seconds on Amazon and found the pull start rope kit. Here is the link amzn.to/2RCbMW1
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina Thanks. Amazon item says: Rope size: #4.5 (9/64") or 3.6mm diameter. It doesn't state the length. Fortunately the guy I got the motor from found the original pull handle with the broken rope attached and I picked it up today. I measured 46 inches long after putting the two pieces together. Since I have the original handle that I would rather use now I only need the new cord. It looks like this Briggs & Stratton Starter Rope will work 0.1 in diameter and 77 in long can be cut to length: www.homedepot.com/p/Briggs-Stratton-Starter-Rope-280399S/206077499
I got 48" of pull cord from the local lawnmower and chainsaw repair place for cheap.
Thank you for this video!! Have you been able to tune your idle?
Yes I have
I’d love to see a tuning video I have a 1971 Johnson 6hp trying to get her tuned up right. Thanks for the reply
