  • We travelled from #Irkutsk to #Yekaterinburg on the #Trans-Siberian 3rd class wagon. We’d had enough of instant ramen, so we put a bit more effort into a food preparation this time!

      Алекс Кос They all offer different types of memories I guess. But yes, we met some lovely families and children on our trip in 3rd class. We talked for hours, played games and shared food. It made the time go quickly and gave us memories we couldn't have planned 😃

      Once I met a girl from Canada who did more or less the same journey from China to Europe through Mongolia & Russia. Her most memorable exprience in Russia was 3rd class train from Irkutsk to Moscow :)

      talked for hours? Did you met someone speaking english? In third class from Irkutsk it's not very probably

      @@BaldTitan You're right we didn't meet anyone that spoke English except a teenage girl who was learning at school. But we used google translate ans we drew pictures (with the kids) and we managed to learn about one another. The conversations took a while, but we had the time 😂

    There are new 3rd class carriage in some trains.They have air cons,vacuum toilets,e.t.c. But there are only 40% of the carriage fleet for now.
    One lifehack-if you buying the train ticket on RZD website-there are several icons marking the carriage comfort level.Snowflake mean-air con.

    Well, thanks to "modern" (1960s) technologies they don't have 4th class anymore. It was the only affordable option for lower classes in the Russian Empire. Beds came in 3 rows, lower, middle and upper, with even less space between them. Moreover each 2 beds of the top and bottom pow could be combined into a 3-person bed that was narowwer then in modern hotel single.

    You stopped and walked in the city called Krasnoyarsk. It is a big city about 1 mln people. It is located on a banks of the Yenisey river which is the largest river in Russia.

    • @AprilandTimTravel

      Thanks Fram :) Coming from Australia where most of the country is uninhabited it was hard to wrap our heads around just how many people live in Russia, and not just in the main cities.

    • @valkrsk
      @valkrsk 5 років тому +26

      I live in Krasnoyarsk. All vast Krasnoyarsk region is about 3 mln people and it is 3 times bigger then France for example. It span almost from Mongolia to the Arctic Ocean. So here in Siberia we have like 95% of the territory uninhabited.

      The biggest river in Russia is not the Yenisey, but the Ob'!

    • @valkrsk
      @valkrsk 5 років тому +2

      Yenisey makes 624 cubic kilometers of outflow per year, Ob is 394 km^3 per year. So Yenisey is 1.6 times bigger than Ob.

    • @user-fn4su6de2c

      The Ob' basin basin is 2 million 990 thousand km². According to this indicator, the river ranks first in Russia.
      The Yenisei River basin area is 2,580,000 km² (the second largest in Russia).

      Pachulin Russia, ну каждому своё. Я лично не могу жить без личного пространства и поездка в плацкарте для меня была бы ужасом, впрочем я в сознательном возрасте в нём и не ездил. Но несколько лет назад ехал сутки в купе - тоже то ещё удовольствие. А с учётом того что купе у РЖД стоит зачастую по цене самолёта, я лучше пару часов посижу в самолёте чем буду сутки трястись в такой скотовозке за те же деньги. А уж несколько дней непрерывной поездки в поезде вместо нескольких часов лёта - это вообще для мазахистов имхо.

      We got SIM cards. We tried this in different countries, but with mixed results. It pays to do a bit of research online to see which phone carriers are better or what other travellers recommend. Also going into a proper phone shop to get one is a good idea as the staff will usually set it all up for you and make sure it works.

    I am from Novosibirsk but live in Moscow and when I go to my hometown I travel by train called Kuzbass (Кузбасс) in a 3rd class. Kuzbass train has air conditioning in all classes and it is very nice and clean. It also has plug ins everywhere so you can charge your devices, use iPad when traveling. However, the 3rd class in Kuzbass train costs almost 10000 roubles plus your own food. It’s actually more expensive than a ticket by plane from Moscow to Novosibirsk. I always avoid traveling by such trains as you did. I’m sorry for you and those other people in the train. Nobody deserves to travel in such bad conditions. Russian government doesn’t do anything to modernize trains treating their own citizens as 3rd rate people and instead having astronomically expensive World Cups.

      ColKorn1965 Actualy they've got shower cabins in every single train. You just have to ask the attendant. Second and third class passengers charged extra 150 rubles (around 2 USD) to use it. First class passengers sometime have personal shower cabins and sometime they use special cabin (one per car) it depends on the train you are travelling on.

      How long have they had these shower cabins?

      ColKorn1965 at least for 5 years. Last time I use those cabins three weeks ago but on another route.

      @@random3362 OK, just curious. Seems like every time I leave Yaroslavski Station the Trans-Siberian is there. My girlfriend rode it to Krasnoyarsk with her grandmother in the 70's when she was about 12, so that may be where she gets the smelly people experience from. :)

    3 klass is uncomfortable, it is noisy children, it is not always pleasant companions. We buy 3 class only if we want to save money. There is no romance .

      No romance indeed 🤣 we were trying to save money as much as possible. But on the flip side its awesome meeting locals, random conversations with people is something you cant plan or pay for 🤗
