I just left Salem from a work trip. The week I spent there on the main Liberty strip was genuinely awesome. I can see how it may not be the best place to move to, but visiting the local area and walking the woods at the park were highlights. The food is STUPIDLY good. Ritters and Bo & Vine had EXCELLENT burgers. The nature is beautiful and the rain is just a lite enough sprinkle that most people just deal with it.
Negatives - The amount of homeless people was unexpected. They left me alone while I was walking, but still kind of creepy and eerie seeing it (even as a 6ft 2in male) especially at night. The road layout... omg the roads... it's like someone dropped a handful of spaghetti on a map and said, "build the roads like this". We have a pretty simple to follow grid system here in most of the south. To say you absolutely need to GPS everything up there is an understatement.
The place seemingly shuts down at 8:30pm. There's so many bars to choose from, that not one of them is packed. If you're looking to socialize, you may consider the Coin Jam... this place is full of friends and couples. I went three times and I don't think I seen a single lone person there to try and break the ice with.
I wouldn't go back alone, but for a comfy cozy date trip with a person I could cuddle up with, I could 100% see myself going back to at least visit.
    I really liked it.

Thanks for sharing your perspective on Salem! It's always great to hear what others have to say.
I would agree with all those points except for the food. I think Salem still has a ways to go to get better food here ◡̈
The funny thing about the roads is that we did just turn many of the one-way streets downtown into two ways which has helped a lot. But it's still TERRIBLE and confusing...I suppose once you get used to it, it just makes sense.
      Thanks for watching!!

I retired last October and recently moved here from Florida. I actually like it better than I thought I would.

From Colleyville, TX.....thinking, thinking.....have kids in Salem now for a few years so have travelled there frequently. And I constantly feel I need a massive change in scenery.

I don't think ya could get more different than Texas Vs. Oregon! It's a whole different ball game over here but, it sounds like you're already familiar with Salem.
What do you think is the biggest difference between TX and Salem?

Different is what i like about Oregon in general. The whole vibe is unique vs where we are now. I have spent my entire career and adult life in Texas, but it has now become a significantly different place politically and culturally. (Maybe I'm just noticing it more now over the last few years) We live in a very affluent area full of book-burning types and I am sick of it. I also like the smaller town feel in Salem. DFW is a hot, mean, crowded place. We are already retired and I am looking for a place with more access to hiking and trails, ocean and mountains. I need to get a clearer vision of what my tax situation will look like though. Will be coming in a couple of weeks to visit the kids.@@SalemOR

Now is a great time to visit. Not yet the rainy season, but perfect Fall weather. All of the leaves are changing color right now and the air is getting crispy!
I haven't been to Texas, but it does sound like a very stark difference in many ways.
Taxes are not my expertise but I'd be happy to connect you with a few CPA's here if ya need.

You can look them up on a map. Stay south (away from I5), or go west Salem if you are worried about being too close.
