The artwork on this game is totally awesome! Atari had such beautiful art on their games, and I've always admired the artists that produced it. Wish I had the creativity and skill to do that. Major props to your dad for such outstanding work!!
In high school there was a nearby arcade where I loved the original Asteroids game. Then the deluxe version arrived and I was like WOW! I Sadly said goodbye after only a month when I left for college out of state and almost never saw the inside of an arcade let alone the Asteroids Dlx. To this day I've tried Asteroid PC games and Asteroid console games and you just can't beat the action of the Original and Deluxe cabinet controls.
It's a great game, if you look in the comments section here on this video the designer of Asteroids Deluxe stopped by and told us a few things about it.
Love the melting effect on the lives display when you start a new life. Atari had a lovely eye for detail. Asteroids Dx is one of the greatest games ever - pretty close to being perfect and it plugs the slight imperfections of the great original game. The randomness in Asteroids games means there's plenty of variety no matter how long you have played it. If I was to own a cabinet I reckon it would be this.
I liked all those old dos games even the crappy ones, there was something different about how simple things were back then. I always thought it was so cool you could copy one off somebody :)
@@LyonsArcade you ever mess with that q basic programming thing? There were a bunch of cool games on it you could mod. Very basic, as the name suggests
I love the ones where you're not very good at the game. :) This one started out pretty promising, with two deaths in like 20 seconds. Got into a pretty good groove there after a bit though. This was definitely one of the best uses of the mirror & backdrop. The black light graphics gave it a really cool effect.
Asteroids was legendary. There were already lots of flashy video arcade games by the time Deluxe came around. Besides, Deluxe nuked the ability to play forever on a quarter 😉
That noise the screen makes - just got one of these myself and it makes a similar noise.... doesn't seem quite as loud as yours but it's hard to tell off a recording because of microphone performance etc. Have noticed it on some other videos too ...must be just that old vector monitor tech. You don't really notice while playing though. Only notice it if there is no other background noise in the room. There is no ventilation in the cabinet - worried about it getting too warm inside what that big old CRT in there. I leave the back door off and lean it against the cab to give it a bit of ventilation.
On mine there's two things going on, yes the Screen makes noise, you can't really get rid of that because it's just the 'vector chatter'... but on mine one of the sound amps had a little bit of noise on it which was most of that 'buzz' you hear on the video. I'm with you though I don't really mind it so I left it like that... with the vector chatter you'll never get it completely quiet anyways :) They DO get really hot inside... those vector monitors cook.
:) Yeah. There's a buzz off mine too as well as the screen chatter though it doesn't seem to be linked to the volume. Think I'll leave the back door sitting partially opened. Was probably OK back 30 odd years ago but I wouldn't want it cooking now!
+Davy K Hey you wrote an excellent guide on importing an arcade machine. I am using info from there so I can hopefully get a Robotron. Thanks for the guide
Not seen this for years.... Hi score tip, select a slow moving small rock and dont ever shoot it... leave it on the screen.... at the same time keep your thrust on and point vertically.... wait for small spaceships, when they appear drop the trust , point in the general direction and blast away
To understand how cool Asteroids and dlx were, need to put in context. Asteroids was like you were in the Asteroids field with Han and chewie in EmpireStrikes Back. And then Star Wars the Arcade Game hit before the release of RotJ. Awesome times
I have a couple of consoles. one of them has about 20 games and the other one about 60 games. had a guy in houston gut them out and put in new and much cleaner electronics, much simpler.
I attempted to replace the cpo and messed up a little. I wanted to do it again using the wet method. What do you think? The dry method seems difficult.
I've never done a CPO wet but we often do the sideart that way, if others have done it with CPO's (I don't know if it works, I've never tried it) it will be fine, we have done a ton of sideart like that.
Awesome video!! I went ahead and purchased a asteroids deluxe from a local guy. I think my black light needs to be replaced, but I do not know the location of it. Any suggestions?? Thank you. What light do I need to buy?
You need a "white black light" not a "black light" they actually make two different kinds if you can believe it. It goes behind the marquee, there's a bulb for the marquee and the blacklight is behind it.
I’ve got one of these in my basement. Love it. I notice though when firing, I don’t get good response from the front panel push button. I cleaned the push button contacts, no change. Any other suggestions?
It might have a bad connection on the switch end, where the wire connects, or in the connector where the control panel can be removed, or where it connects to the game board as well. Anywhere that there is dirt it will make it intermittent.
Also look very close at the contacts to make sure they cant' spin in the switch blade. If they can spin they're not connecting to the blade well electronically
It should say his and her..........take your PC CULTURE and shove it. Poor wahman is offendered. These snow flakes have almost ruined modern video games and now they are trying to ruin old games.
Nice. My pops did the cabinet art on this. His first assignment was Red Baron. Some of his last ones were Road Blaster, APB and Toobin'.
Tell your Dad if he's still around he's a LEGEND!

Awesome

Absolutely! Everything had a joystick from about this point on....
The game was altered so you couldn't play forever like the original. People lost interest and it never took off because they were spoiled
Great game. So glad I have one. My top three favorite classics! (along with Centipede and Missile Command)
If it ain't Atari, it ain't right!!!
Awesome! Brings back childhood memories I use to play this game a lot!
Thank you for watching Eduardo!
Never played it in the arcades, but it's on my arcade 1up tempest. I love it, probably my favorite now.

Yeah I like the randomness of it like you said, and every shot makes it a little more random as stuff breaks up. Great sound, too.
I have this game original dedicated. Still play it and love it.
Really gorgeous cabinet.Sound and backdrop art everything is amazing. Thanks for showing
Yeah, a real classic, they made a lot of works of art back then.
Joe's Classic Video Games sure did.
this game is so damn cool. i wasn't alive when this was out, but my dad had asteroids on msdos haha that was my first ever video game

I kind of just play to pass time and have fun, if anybody was trying to get a good score what I do is the exact wrong thing to do :)
@@LyonsArcade I agree with dougdoberman. It's more like a normal person, playing + learning the game. Much more interesting to watch
Love all your videos...great job as usual showing and explaining the game...
Thanks, more videos on the way!

Cool thing about Asteroids cp and others like Wizard of Wor was the cp art was painted directly on the metal cp, no overlay.

It was Warlords from Atari that had a similar shape cabinet and even a mirror background

very cool .
Thanks!
Looks like you need thumbs, knuckles and fingers for this one, maybe like defender and stargate? What a glorious cab must've sold really fast.
Nice game play
Thanks T Brown, I didn't do too good though :)

Do you have a video of Ripoff? I loved that as much as Asteroids and it allowed two simultaneous players.
Unfortunately I've never had one, sorry!
@@LyonsArcade I found one.

We've been taking it easy :) We'll have some new stuff up tomorrow, though... you'll like it!
Id rather have shields than warp. Warp is a crap shoot
Yeah me too, the Warp is kind of useless to me!
How much is that worth!
The last one we had was $1200.
I have this box but not working i want to saled if you intrested pls write me messages!!!!!

I approve of your comment! Destroy woke supremacy! George Carlin was right, he said PC culture is fascism with a smile, or something to that effect.
