I got to play one of these when I was shopping for my intermediate flute! The contrabass flute I played was really easy to get the sound out, even easier than the alto flute I played 6 months prior
@@GinaLuciani SUPER well, has almost a threatening feeling! The flute, at least on video, sounds a bit like a bassoon mixed with an almost brassy sound; not at all what I expected from a flute! Thanks for sharing it with us :)
Great video and vibrato! I love low and very low register sounding instruments. Such a pleasingly haunting color. I particularly love (and have) bass, contralto, and contrabass clarinet’s. Absolutely amazing tone color. Thanks for sharing
When I tried the subcontra a NFA all Eva Kingma said to me was "normal flute embouchure" and I quickly made a good sound. Now, I don't know what she would have said to me had that first instruction resulted in too tight an embouchure for the instrument, but all this "you need to relax your embouchure for low flutes" I don't like. At the very least this depends how you play C flute to begin with. That said at WIFF when showing the contra to kids, the first kid could not make a sound and I could not help her. One of the other players in our club who does contra told her to forget about having an embouchure completely and just pretend she's blowing on a bottle, and just like that she made a sound, so it's not so simple. Both schools of thought may have their place.
My dad only plays the regular concert flute in C, piccolo, alto flute and bass flute. He was a studio musician who played all the clarinets, saxophones and flutes and oboe.
I remember learning (and struggling) to handle the contrabass clarinet at music college, and a colleague advising to "think as low as you can". That did it -- then I could play it!
I've got a C foot, B foot, Alto, Bass, and a Piccolo. I certainly don't need a Contra Bass. But BOY HOWDY, I want a Contra Bass flute. I could take it to a BART Station and busk, in all that vaulted, concrete. Just the thought makes my hair stand on end.
As a composer, I'm really wondering about the specific musical potentials of the contrabass flute. Is the tone in the low register strong enough to be used in ensembles other than flute choirs? I wondering how telling it'd be e.g. in an orchestra doubling the cello section. Also, I was interested to hear you play phrases of reasonable length. Knowing how much more breath this takes than a C flute, how long a phrase is possible compared to the C flute?
i wonder what the "headjoint" sounds alone, also someone should make a "contrabass orchestra" with the contrabass flute, clarinet, saxophone, and trombone
Just wanted to let you know. Some of your links are not working. Also flute center doesn't offer free shipping on low flutes with codes. They said because they are heavier. Also I totally love that you did this video. You play it so beautifully.
Hey Trish, thank you for letting me know! I just found out the other day about the low flutes so I'll make sure for new videos to add that in. Which links weren't working for you? Again, I really appreciate you letting me know!
@@GinaLuciani ok maybe it's just my computer. it seems they worked when I copy and pasted them here. not sure why they work in the comments and not above on your post. Weird. Anyhow. I love your stuff. I'm purchasing a low flute just not sure if it will be alto or bass. I have basses on trial right now. so in love with the low flutes.
That’s a Wiseman case ain’t it? They’re so well made. I got a custom combined one for my Mopane B footed C# trill keyed Abell flute and Yamaha 62 piccolo both in one piece. Would love to try a contrabass flute again. Low notes are so awesome!
Dig this; the lowest flute is the C hyperbass flute, which is 4 octaves lower than the C standard concert soprano flute, 3 octaves lower than the C bass flute, 2 octaves lower than the C contrabass flute & an octave lower than the C double contrabass flute, or sub contrabass flute. Amazing, isn’t it?
Yay. I found someone else who actually knows this. i’ve done a lot of research on the Internet on low flutes so I know a lot about them. The hyperbase has a really cool sound.
Heey Gina Say i watch some Videos from you für 12 hole ocarina and i want to ask if you can make one for the gerudo valley from the legend of zelda??! You did some already like sarias song etc... You explain very good 😉👍
That’s a subcontra bass flute, I suggest you look at flute bands from Northern Ireland, in these bands you have picc g treble concert alto bass contra bass subcontra bass and double subcontra bass. Check out Eva Kingma flutes, by the was in LA there is a flute group that has a double subcontra bass flute.
Flute Street from Toronto, The Metropolitan Flute Orchestra, and Peter Sheridan's flute groups from Australia also have this very rare flute in their ensembles.
Normally sinks, toilets, and baths work better if we leave the plumbing in the walls. This flute is about as cheesy in gimmicky as the flute scene in LA.
Our flute ensemble now has two contrabass players. We are so excited!
That's so cool!
Great vid! Thank you for making one like this, it's so hard to find quality recordings of this instrument. Fantastic playing as well!
Didn't expect to see you here!
Your the best
we all know that was Henry sad theme

Yeah. The contrabass has a very relaxed embrochure. It should be much more relaxed than alto and bass flute playing for sure. 🙂
You played it so beautifully!!!!! I'm so happy for you!!
Thank you!
Somber yet thoughtful sound. Very cool Gina!
The song at the beginning was the Batman The Animated Series opening theme! Love that’s the song you chose :)
You got it!! I thought it worked well on this flute

This is one hell of a big piccolo!

I really love my Kingma contrabass flute. Amazing explanation.
I remember learning (and struggling) to handle the contrabass clarinet at music college, and a colleague advising to "think as low as you can". That did it -- then I could play it!
My high school has alto and bass flutes, I became sort of the low flute specialist for a while. I dream of the day I get to play a contra
a great stocking stuffer! Dear Santa.....
Your stockings must be really amazing!
Thank you' for a great and super informative video' about this amazing Instrument!🎼
One of our flute ensemble members owns a Pearl contra bass flute. It’s such an awesome instrument!
I have the pearl flute contrabass and its amazing did a whole project with it and worked well .I wonder how much better that the Kingma is
Such a cool sound! 😎🤩
That is so amazing!! I play the Native American style flute and my favorite sounds come from the contra bass instruments❤❤ excellent presentation!

Wonderful sounding instrument
Beautiful instrument! It would be great to use in background music for a movie or documentary.
I never seen something like that interesting I got to take that the flute I rented back and ask about this I'll be taking lessons
It's pretty cool!
Was the tune in the beginning the theme from Tim Burton's Batman movie?

Please don’t forget to post a contra’alto or contralto flute in G, an octave lower than the alto flute. That contrabass flute in C is awesome, yo.
I would love to have one for scoring, but um that price lol.
I know :(

The numbers on the parts of the instrument...it's like assembling Ikea furniture
For real tho 😂
Now we need a subcontrabass flute haha
there is one!
Awesome 👍🏻👍🏻

You can add me to the list of contra players in the LA area :)
In the Hall of the Mountain King Kong
I know, right!
8:02 To the point
It is certainly cool, but I’ll stick to my bass clarinet for that bass sound.
Voltade ter uma Flaulta dessa
I have played contrabass for concert band just not alto or bass.
9:07-9:33
henry sad tunel theme
And then there’s the cello, which goes as low as that contrabass flute, and as high as the piccolo
Cost?
There's a UA-cam video about a flute choir, in which the director explains that the contrabass costs as much as a car!
Regular flutists double on pic.
Contra flutists double as car jack.
hahaha love that
