This happens because the CPU is not receiving enough voltage to keep those low idle clocks, so this results in crashes and most of the time random reboots. On my 5900x I actually couldn't undervolt the cpu at all because no matter what negative number I used I got random reboots. With my 5950x I found -12 to be 100% stable. I just upgraded to AM5 and a 7900x yesterday so I'll give -20 a try but I'm pretty certain I'll get random reboots at idle and I'm sure I'll have to drop that number to something like -15 or -12 again. Honestly, I'm not really worried about performance gains over stock because I'm getting a 5.5Ghz all core boost as is, so I'm just looking for lower temps since in Handbrake I'm getting temps in the low 90s.

isn't is just better if you buy 7900 and overclock it to get almost same performance as 7900x ( considering you are using same cooler you would use on a 7900x ) when you need that extra performance, otherwise just let it be limited to 88w and enjoy the efficiency ( source - gamers nexus and LTT)? am I missing something here because according to me, on same coolers and setup, overclocked 7900 = 7900x. both score around 30k on r23

Doesn't setting a specific clock frequency limit the CPU to that frequency always? And if so isn't it better to have the CPU freely use it's power capabilities of boosting whenever it needs to or does it not interfere at all?
It does limit the CPU max clock but makes it realy stable. It really depends on your usecase, which is why I show both a dynamic UV option and the static one you mentioned! :)
Nice video man, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. One question tho, how do I stop the freaking cores mhz spikes everytime I open an app or browser.. my temps go from 45-50c all the way to 65-75c, its so annoying because my fans will ramp up randomly every time I try to do anything rather than gaming on the pc.

I set the max temp limit to 80°C for my R7 5800X3D, before was set to 89°C Hope will reduce the temps overall, ingame temps are 62°C-79°C, all core boost 4.54GHz, room temp 24°C. I want to experimemt with this what happens if inreduxe to 78°C.
Very interesting! I acually have just bought an used PC with a 5800X3D, I'll be testing it out and releasing an Undervolting tutorial for that one soon!
@ImWateringPSUs So I set the max temp to 74°C and the results are: in CinebenchR 23.2 I got 15239 pts. Max temp: 89.5°C, 126W power draw. Max cpu boost 4441 all core. I get the same score also when I set to 89°C Max temp but then the cpu goes up to 92°C. The difference is that while I'm running cinebench the cpu core throttles down to 3593MHz from 4441MHz all core when the Max temp limit is 74°C but I get the same score.
What programs are you guys running that is keeping your 7900x at high temps? I tested my 7900x with an Arctic 280mm, Artic 360mm, and a Deepcool LT720 and I hardly ever see the temps go above 70c while using an aggressive fan curve.

I didnt trust this at first but I gave it a go, thermals limited to 80c, and minus 20, yet im getting better cinebench and blender benchmark performance vs stock? I dont get how running my cpu at a lower thermal and power limit improves performance ?
okay after a bit more research I understand, its not just reducing the voltage, its reducing the voltage relative to clockspeed, so as an example at 4.5ghz it normally expects 1.1v and a t 5.5ghz it expects 1.4v as an example, undervolting is reducing the voltage at specific clock speeds so the -30 shift at 4.5 is 1.07v and at 5.5 is 1.37v with a -30 offset, and the reason it improves performance is your producing less heat at the same clock speed so you can maintain the clockspeed, you just have to get lucky that your cpu can handle running at lower voltages. This also means if you leave your max temp at 90-95 you can get more performance, or you can reduce temp targets to save power
I currently getting 65-75c idle and only about 80-85c gaming on games like red dead 2 at all ultra maxed out settings I want to keep frames as much as possible but lower temps with still about 5.2-5.3 ghz is this possible
Need help. Just tried these settings. Saved and exited BIOS. rebooted and red light indicator on motherboard w/ black screen. How can I revert these settings? 😕
Set the overclock at like 4900 and voltage to 1.90. I can restart and all normally while getting good temps. If you need help just reply and I'm willing to help. It's not talked about enough.
I assume you fixed this already but just for anyone else facing this issue. Turn off the PC and plug the power off. Take out the flat CMOS battery out of your motherboard or press the reset button if tour mobo has one. Wait for 1 minute, put the battery back, plug in your PC and reboot. This should reset the changes made to your BIOS.
Would this also lower the fan noise? I have the same CPU, and it's insane how often my cpu sounds like an airplane when I'm just browsing the web, and stuff.

What is a good idle/full temp for cpu? Thanks for the tutorial.
Idle anything under 55 in a warm environment is pretty good. Full load anything under 90C!
isn't is just better if you buy 7900 and overclock it to get almost same performance as 7900x ( considering you are using same cooler you would use on a 7900x ) when you need that extra performance, otherwise just let it be limited to 88w and enjoy the efficiency ( source - gamers nexus and LTT)?
am I missing something here because according to me, on same coolers and setup, overclocked 7900 = 7900x. both score around 30k on r23
I really recommend this approach! Minimum effort for getting the maximum out of your ryzen! Set curve. Good content!

Hello. For motherboard Asus B650EFgaming? Where is the tutorial? Thanks
The settings are the same, if you’re confused by the naming try to cross reference with other videos from my CPU undervolting playlist!
Will this hurt the lifespan or help it by doing this? Any info on this would be much appreciated.
I'm using a 7809x3d. The msi pro b650-vc wifi doesn't have the cpu ratio mode
Doesn't setting a specific clock frequency limit the CPU to that frequency always? And if so isn't it better to have the CPU freely use it's power capabilities of boosting whenever it needs to or does it not interfere at all?
Im wondering the same thing
It does limit the CPU max clock but makes it realy stable. It really depends on your usecase, which is why I show both a dynamic UV option and the static one you mentioned! :)
Nice video man, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. One question tho, how do I stop the freaking cores mhz spikes everytime I open an app or browser.. my temps go from 45-50c all the way to 65-75c, its so annoying because my fans will ramp up randomly every time I try to do anything rather than gaming on the pc.
I’m really happy it was helpful! Thanks a lot for taking the time to leave some feedback! I set the max temp limit to 80°C for my R7 5800X3D, before was set to 89°C
Hope will reduce the temps overall, ingame temps are 62°C-79°C, all core boost 4.54GHz, room temp 24°C.
How does it works for a 7900 non-X for example ?
What programs are you guys running that is keeping your 7900x at high temps? I tested my 7900x with an Arctic 280mm, Artic 360mm, and a Deepcool LT720 and I hardly ever see the temps go above 70c while using an aggressive fan curve.
I was using Prime95
When I am exploring in Chrome and using Windows folders my temperature is 52C° stock, but when I am playing Left 4 Dead 2 in 4K and using OBS for stream it reaches a temperature of 85°, is it normal? would a 7800x3d run at 48 ratio with 1.2v? i'd set the min cpu state in power options to 100% and then basically all cores would not drop lower than 4800mhz

Have you found this motherboard incredibly slow to boot? Just got one and updated firmware but man it takes for ever to POST.
I’ve heard about it, but to be completely honest mine used to boot fine. I think a lot depends on the RAM!
Its the ram trying to find the best sets to load without faults, you can turn this off in the bios.
Memory context restore.. change from auto to enabled. Reboot a couple times. Should be better after that.
I tried these setting but keep getting blue screen of death.
I’d say you need a less aggressive offset, little bit of an unlucky CPU
i tried mine with 1.1 volt and 5.1ghz and its stable, also i get it stable with -30 curve optimizer
can i have your cpu

Set the overclock at like 4900 and voltage to 1.90. I can restart and all normally while getting good temps. If you need help just reply and I'm willing to help. It's not talked about enough.
I assume you fixed this already but just for anyone else facing this issue. Turn off the PC and plug the power off. Take out the flat CMOS battery out of your motherboard or press the reset button if tour mobo has one. Wait for 1 minute, put the battery back, plug in your PC and reboot. This should reset the changes made to your BIOS.

Yes but a stable clock speed increases productivity performance since it avoids throttle and gives you higher 1% lows in game
has annyone acaully done this with their 7900x? i was going to try it but i want to see results in gaming and productivity, i dont know why he didnt do that
Hi, if you wanna see the gaming and productivity tests, they’re in my PC build videos. I try to keep my tutorials slim :)
Mine 7900X Is set to negative 30 and 85C max temp. All tests show better performance. Before it run on 95C default, and now on 85C max. But some youtube channels suggest also to set max power draw. I wonder why is that, because setting the max temp to 85 instead of factory 95 already reduces power. So do I need to set the power too or leave it like this?
Max power draw is useless and actually counter productive to set :)
