- How To Create Custom Overlays For Your Stream In Canva. One of the most asked questions I get is about how I create my graphics for video and streams. I'm an Adobe Creative Cloud user but in this video I'm showing you how to create live stream overlays using FREE software like Canva for Ecamm live. This would work for something like OBS, as well, but this is a specific canva tutorial for Ecamm Live that is only available for Mac.

So Canva doesn’t do live-streaming right now. But you can definitely incorporate it with the strategy. What are you using to go live now?

Excellent instructional video. Do you have instructions regarding adding the overlays to OBS?
Similar to Ecamm, OBS has Scenes and then Overlay. If you're on the scene that you want, you then go into the overlay section and click on the + to add a source, which would be an image or your overlay file.

This is DOPE but I have a Windows PC. Ecamm doesn't work with windows Any alternatives for Windows?
Same rule would apply for OBS or VMIX. I'm not sure about the "cut out" part, though.

I am having trouble with getting rid of the background, could you name a few more apps that allow you to erase the background please?
Canva now actually has background removal within the app itself. You could also try something like remove.bg.

So unfortunately you can’t do this IN ZOOM without another software like Ecamm live. Ecamm Live has a function called Virtual Camera that outputs all of my overlays and production to Zoom!

Because I’m not a graphic designer, the time that would take me to design that in Canva, I’ll just design it in ECamm.
I get it. It’s all about what works best for your needs! I do everything in Adobe but every now and then, Canva comes in clutch

Great video Walter. My question for you can I create that same type of template in Canva and use it in Strem Yard? Or are the designs you have made specifically for Ecamm? Thanks for answering my question.
These are designs I've made specifically for Ecamm but the same would apply for Streamyard because they utilize overlays, as well. When it comes to guests or panels, you have to size it based on their setup because they don't have the option to overlay video like in Ecamm or OBS.

How do you do add animation before the video starts? I saw one where they had curtains open before the video started
Great question. It depends on the platform you're using. Canva now has a video option where you can add animations or transitions if you're using it as a video editor.

Thank you so much for commenting. So it depends on the software that you're using. Personally, I can add mine in Ecamm and it's baked into the video OR you add it in post production when you're editing your videos.
@walter jennette I was able to get to the end of the video and wasn’t able to make the overlay transparent because my THINKPAD doesn’t have the command key and insta alpha IS NOT AVAILABLE on the markup tool once downloaded as a PNG so I’m stuck. Can you give me some advice or tips ?

So can I have an overlay during N active zoom interview?
Yes you can. I personally use Ecamm live, which has a virtual cam feature so I'm able to push any overlays or graphics going on inside of Ecamm live out to zoom!
I can't figure out the markup tool do you have to download a app?
Markup is for Mac but it's not a separate app. When you take a screenshot or open a picture in the preview app, there's a highlighter icon. That's the markup tool.
Hey Walt, I was wondering if it's possible to make a custom clipping mask in Canva?
I don't think you can do custom. You can use the shapes and frames already provided in Canva, though.
Would this work with StreamYard?
Ideally...yes! You would just have to know how to format it with the way the camera works in streamyard
So when you have a guest would you just as the guest name In cava and being it back in the ecamm?
Well, it depends. Either I'll go ahead and make the guest name as part of the overlay to eliminate having to do it in Ecamm. Or if it's an overlay I'm going to use all the time, I'll leave it blank and just create a new text overlay each time for a different guest in Ecamm.
Where do you get your graphics from for your live streams and videos?
Entire video out of focus. Lol. 😂 Post it anyway!!!
