I also forgot to mention this in the video but when Chappell is kneeling and looking up at the end of her performance, it's likely a reference to the 1865 John Everett Millais painting of Joan (the same painting Kate Bush took inspiration from).
many people think that her look wasn't referencing Joan of Arc but rather Julie d'Aubigny and i am inclined to agree. the backdrop isn't a castle but a convent (that's why there are many crosses), because Julie burned down one to steal her lesbian lover. if you don't know who she is, i highly recommend you to look into her story, she is an icon!! strange æons awhile ago did a video on historical lesbians figures (the wild stories of historical gay nuns) and Julie was one of them, maybe this video would be a good starting point
Oh that's an interesting piece of lesbian history! Thank you. However, I think the armour and the military theme are more suggestive of Joan - maybe it's even a mix of both?
@@SapphicUnderground I agree! Although one can explain the military themes: Julie was a fencing master and fought many duels, but visually the knight armor is more reminiscent of the middle ages, not the end of XVII century. It's also possible that Chappell's look was a combination of both or neither historical figures. This is the beauty of art: every interpretation is different and valid. I enjoyed your take on Chappell's VMAs performance!
D’Aubigny was a bisexual actress who did not live during the Middle Ages. A great deal of her stories were invented by a man who lived centuries after she did, and the convent story was apparently inspired by two letters recounting the events of a young nun who started a fire to better escape and join her male lover. Nowhere is D’Aubigny mentioned in those sources. Ironically enough, her popularity in lesbian spaces (weird, when there are lesbian figures who don’t get half the same attention) seems like it’s the result of the same fascination that those people had ages ago. I’m obviously not Roan but D’Aubigny is not who I’d want to emulate - the Joan of Arc imagery is simply that much cooler.
I love the imagery of the men fighting each other around her too. She has to fend them off but it's evocative of the patriarchal violence that destroys itself while she breaks free.
OMG, IN MY POV, HER SHOOTING THE CASTLE IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WAR, RIGHT? THEN BACK BEFORE IT HAPPENED, IT LOOKED LIKE SHE WAS TRAINING HER MEN IN MY POINT OF VIEW? UNTIL IT LEAD TO THE WAR. BUT IDK IM OBSESSED WITH OVERTHINKING THE PERFORMANCE
With the way she was moving their swords, or that part where she was fixing their posture. But in the end, I also thought about of the men getting finished off by themselves.
@@zachhh1217 Yes, good point! there is some phallic imagery with the swords, which yes, she can wield on her own. She even rejects them and gives it back. But it's still not coming from a place of personal hatred for her. she does give a soldier a little hug when she sits on his leg, but she does walk away to do her own thing. She's such an artist ❤️

Meg and Halseys performances were great and those alone would have been a huge change of the VMAs quality in years, but Chappells turned it into what feels like a revival of quality performances in award shows since probably kendricks performance at the grammys (or beyonces but she always does incredible)
Considering how fans treated her badly after she postponed shows to train for the VMA"s recently it's very thoughtful and kind of you to say you hope you are not crossing any boundaries. I appreciate that you're concerned about respecting Chappell's boundaries. I think in general, discussing art and what it means and the themes it's about is totally fair game. It's just when it turns into speculation about the artist's real personal life that it gets gross. I think this video did a great job analyzing the layers of the art and is very much within bounds. Thanks for the video!
I think people misunderstand chappell when she says don't yell at me from cars, try to kiss and grab me, or get mad at me if I deny a picture bc they automatically think she wants no one to interact with her/her work ever and that is simply not what she's saying 😅 I saw her out and about fairly recently and was almost shitting my pants but I said "hey, sorry to bother you, but I love your music, you're doing great!", she smiled, said thank you and complimented my dress. Imo if you're respectful and are just interacting with the character and the music in a regular way, it should be fine.
Interesting analysis! My interpretation of the performance is probably more simple, I think it's just a visual representation of lyrics of "Good Luck, Babe!", the knights surrounding her representing feelings/thoughts and the struggle with accepting your sexuality. The way how she interacts with the knights represents different stages of coming to terms with your sexuality. Denial, internalized homophobia, heteronormativity, but also acceptance. At one point she pushes them back, she fights them, then she also dances with them and goes with the flow, she sits on the knee, and then it all ends with the knights fighting each other and falling down to ground while Chappell being the only one that survived.
She looked F I E R C E, mama!!! My jaw was on the floor when I saw those pics and her incredible performance. Mary, I am still stun-locked and in awe. She's truly such an intriguing and powerful individual. 🔥🔥🔥
this is such a valuable artistic and visual analysis!!! i thought that the burning castle was maybe only meant to represent her burning the memories and love from her failed relationship with the girl she’s singing about. but you added another layer to this that gave it so much more significance. thank you so so much. i think one of the reasons this performance/theme was so impactful was because she did it with complete earnestness. it wasn’t ironic or comedic or campy like so much of her art that we’ve seen so far during her rise. it was serious and elegant and powerful and almost dark. and such a departure from the aesthetic we’re used to from her. i think maybe she was trying to show that she’s not just a gimmick, or locked into form, or a piece of entertainment at an award show. instead, she’s going to take control of her narrative, show us her range, and stand out from the crowd. when u said she is burning down the system or powerful structures, that also made me think that maybe she is also burning the music industry that is hurting her right now (such as the mental toll of fame and the creepy fans). this is her reinforcing her own power and demonstrating that she can defend herself against these forces that have taken over her life. thank you so much again for this brilliant video!!
I think your analysis is pretty solid - one detail I would add is that if she's meant to be playing Joan of Arc, then I suspect that this is an analogue to the Siege of Orleans. Joan helped break the siege on the city that had been under attack for nearly a year.
[Your "don't forget to subscribe" pitch is the best I've ever heard] I find no reason to take exception with any element of your interpretation here. The connections are clear and the interpretations well-supported by evidence. We know from Genesis Webb's Interview magazine interview that just came out that CR's original idea was "knight," and I see no reason to believe that this choice was "I just thought it was hot" (Jimmy Fallon intervew); this was clearly a more serious concept that she stuck with even though it had to go through three iterations to pass fire-safety muster (Webb interview). So, I think you've made a strong case that this is another visual spectacle with something to say to anyone who wants to think about it and look some stuff up--like the Osheaga nun costumes, like the Statue of Liberty and the speech. Thanks for this.
She has trained us (the fans) well. At 2:50 you mention respecting her boundaries. How refreshing to acknowledge an artist's humanity and make a commentary from a place of respect. People can say what they want about her declaration of boundaries, but it worked. She put us on notice, and millions of us have complied beautifully. XO P.S. Love the Steve Nicks album cover!
REBEL HEART era was just incredible for Madonna and deserved more love in 2015 Joan of Arc is just fantastic as a metaphor and showcase of femininity and masculinity, faith and trust ....and how that can destroy you and rebirth you! Madonna being bisexual and open about her gender and sexuality I adore that when she was near 60 she still went all out a decade ago and gave full on warrior queen as a metaphor for herself being perceived as a witch (the negative connotation of such) and the media today too....it's fascinating ....Xena Warrior Princess I also draw comparisons to too 🖤❤️🔥⚔️

I find your interpretation very interesting! If I may, I'd like to give you mine too, which I think can perfectly blend into yours. Listening to you, I totally see the political message and imagery of the performance but I think it can also have another layer of interpretation, more directly linked to the lyrics. What if the castle represents the love interest from the song? Like Chappel literally setting her on fire, despite the girl repeating that she's heterosexual. Chappel is burning down the fortress protecting that girl, breaking through all her self defence mechanisms set by herself (and society) because Chappel knows the girl is lying to herself. The knights around Chappel reprensents the "hundreds boys" the girl kisses and seduces to try to forget her and to convince herself that she's not into women. And I don't know if the ending with all the hands around Chappel was intentional but it is so onpoint because at the end, the girl HAS to admit she still wants her, that Chappel was right all along. This is what I find so clever with this performance. I had a totally different vision of the message Chappel Roan gives here and yet, I now find yours totally on point and totally corresponding with the performance too. And THIS is what I love about music performances and shows like the VMA. To see an ARTIST giving us something that can have multiple interpretations that can co-exist at the same time.
I concur, there are Joan of arc tones but if you know anything about Julie D’Aubigny, she set fire to a nunnery that her lover had been sent to, therefore I think it leans more to Julie than Joan 😊
The best part is that "Good Luck, Babe" is clearly about a lesbian saying "bye bye" to a girlfriend that wants to marry a guy someday, or at least that's the opinion of the singer.
tbh i was a little disappointed at first. i thought she’d have a princess love interest or someone with her on stage. it would’ve been so refreshing after we had an evening of straight female artists kissing women and scissoring on stage for shock value but after watching your analysis i appreciate her performance much more. maybe she just didn’t want to be cliche who knows
@@christinakerovecz9018 eyeroll. she's never had a relationship with a woman. she just constantly uses the implication of sapphic love to cone across as 'edgy and submersive'. performative lesbianism is a form of female objectification. women aren't just objects for other women to use, to look or feel 'cool'.
I don’t know how subversive she is when she’s been feted by audiences and critics alike for at least the past year and the VMAs have obviously spent big on the backdrop, background dancers etc. But it’s great that she’s getting her just desserts as a really creative and powerful artist.
Joan of Arc's gender non conformatiy came from her at first wearing men's armour because after all, she was going to battle, and the army gave her whatever they had. She kept wearing it while imprisoned as a means to protect herself from getting assaulted by the prison guards. The church used this against her when she was charged.
All well and good but Brimheim (also lesbian btw) did the Joan thing first (Poison Fizzing on a Tongue video from about 3 years ago). Hardly unique. and I would be unsurprised if CR and her creative team had found inspiration in that video. But I suppose someone has to bring it to Americans, so there's always that. And CR's track is an absolute belter.

"The change [Roan] wants to see in the US in this election year, she says instantly, is “trans rights. They cannot have cis people making decisions for trans people, period.”" ( _The Guardian_ 9-20-24)
ok while i love chappell and her vmas peformance, i dont think its right to say that christianity is homophobic bc it’s not, though some other christians interpret that and think that. god accepts anyone and everyone regardless, even chappell. i can see how chappell growing up in a church could’ve affected her, with her being gay but that is only because of the more so conservative christian’s that she grew up with in the midwest. once again, not all christian’s and christianity so please don’t stereotype the whole religion
The only thing I don't like about Chappell Roan is that she lies about being "poor" and "broke" when her parents are multimillionaires who own an empire of clinics. I don't understand why artists need to lie about having rich parents - I guess they want to seem more relatable, or fear getting labeled "nepo babies" but I think it's worse to lie about it, the truth always comes out.
the thing about selling superficiality and arrogance is, you can't really be upset when your artistic expression is too complex for the masses to grasp lol.
I love chapp but this performance was extremely underwhelming. I think she was a bit nervous which makes sense. But there was nothing special about this performance,
Okay, no-one else mentioned it so far, so I will. There was a Taylor moment when Katy Perry was giving her Vanguard acceptance speech. Taylor was fine until KP gave a shout out to the LGBTQ community. At that point her shoulders slumped and she got serious. Tearful, actually. After that, she perked up a bit and startled when KP mentioned that you can be "kind and c--ty". She turned to Jack, who pointed at her as if to say, "that's you" and she nodded and turned back to face the stage. This has been discussed at length several places, and there is film out there from both in front of her, and from behind her and Jack. It's been interpreted as her sadness at not being able to express herself as she would wish to, and her identifying with the community mentioned, with Jack's acknowledgement. IDK, see what you think.

Amazing thank you
I thought the fire represented a burning intense love.
Lesbians are so passionate man
Can you do a talk about the lesbian show "a league of their own"?
She wasn’t Joan of Arc. CR was Julie d’Aubigny
I concur, there are Joan of arc tones but if you know anything about Julie D’Aubigny, she set fire to a nunnery that her lover had been sent to, therefore I think it leans more to Julie than Joan 😊
The best part is that "Good Luck, Babe" is clearly about a lesbian saying "bye bye" to a girlfriend that wants to marry a guy someday, or at least that's the opinion of the singer.
never clicked faster
She gave me a bit of Sigourney Weaver in Aliens at first…
I have a Joan of Arc tattoo on my side with a sword 🗡☙❤❧
Well done!
SHE IS THE NEW GAGA
absolutely random question did you get your channel name from velvet underground (only cause stevie's there haha) im obsessed
Subbing for instant disappointment was a bar
SHE LITERALLY LOOKS LIKE SHE IS FROM A RENAISSANCE PAINTING
Julie d'Aubigny
tbh i was a little disappointed at first. i thought she’d have a princess love interest or someone with her on stage. it would’ve been so refreshing after we had an evening of straight female artists kissing women and scissoring on stage for shock value but after watching your analysis i appreciate her performance much more. maybe she just didn’t want to be cliche who knows
Katy Perry is straight but the girl she was singing/scissoring with (Doechii) is bisexual so at least there's that
@@JordynDavis-tx7fp I think KP has said she is bisexual in the past.
Cardi B and Meg Thee Stallion are both BISEXUAL as hell, just a reminder.
Meg Thee Stallion & Cardi B are Both BISEXUAL AS HELL, just as a reminder 🎉
I don’t know how subversive she is when she’s been feted by audiences and critics alike for at least the past year and the VMAs have obviously spent big on the backdrop, background dancers etc. But it’s great that she’s getting her just desserts as a really creative and powerful artist.
I mean you can both be popular AND subversive
❤❤
Joan of Arc's gender non conformatiy came from her at first wearing men's armour because after all, she was going to battle, and the army gave her whatever they had. She kept wearing it while imprisoned as a means to protect herself from getting assaulted by the prison guards. The church used this against her when she was charged.
As soon as I saw that performance I knew it was Joan of arc
All well and good but Brimheim (also lesbian btw) did the Joan thing first (Poison Fizzing on a Tongue video from about 3 years ago). Hardly unique. and I would be unsurprised if CR and her creative team had found inspiration in that video.
But I suppose someone has to bring it to Americans, so there's always that. And CR's track is an absolute belter.
Yes, the Joan of Arc thing has been done before (even by me) and then there is:
Daughters of Destiny (film)
Jeannette: The Childhood of Joan of Arc
Joan of Arc (2019 film)
Joan of Arc (1900 film)
Joan of Arc (1935 film)
Joan of Arc (1948 film)
Joan of Arc (miniseries)
Joan of Arc at the Stake
Joan the Maid
Joan the Woman

"The change [Roan] wants to see in the US in this election year, she says instantly, is “trans rights. They cannot have cis people making decisions for trans people, period.”" ( _The Guardian_ 9-20-24)
I don’t understand your title. Do you mean “peace”? Even that doesn’t make sense. Is the title missing a word?
ok while i love chappell and her vmas peformance, i dont think its right to say that christianity is homophobic bc it’s not, though some other christians interpret that and think that. god accepts anyone and everyone regardless, even chappell. i can see how chappell growing up in a church could’ve affected her, with her being gay but that is only because of the more so conservative christian’s that she grew up with in the midwest. once again, not all christian’s and christianity so please don’t stereotype the whole religion
GRIMES already did that in 2012 who are you ppl
I didn’t understand it
but why were all the back up dancers dudes??? and why could we see her band?
she explained that in the video.
This is incorrect and you’re also a tool
the thing about selling superficiality and arrogance is, you can't really be upset when your artistic expression is too complex for the masses to grasp lol.
❤
Maybe it's her from past life
Pocahontas???
Young Shirley Jones Angela White Jose
I love chapp but this performance was extremely underwhelming. I think she was a bit nervous which makes sense. But there was nothing special about this performance,
Moore Kimberly Walker Joseph Jackson Betty
taylor swift in that outfit reminds me of jojo siwa trying to be a bad girl
She looked hot to me lol
It was basic
