Is there a cheaper way to do it if you want to do a lot? Like a year pass? I thought the people who did the TA just bought one pass that was good for all huts.
The Great Walks huts act in a different system because they are so popular. The other huts are much cheaper and a hut pass can be bought. TA doesn't go thru the Great Walks treks just because you have to book your stay well in advance. But there is a possibility to camp, too, on the Great Walks, that's cheaper!
@@HM-gk3rq Yes, that's the misconception I also had. TA isn't actually "The Best Of" of NZ hiking, it's just a trail connecting the whole country. It does have great trails and sections but it doesn't connect them all.
@@MaiuLunekund You need to go to the tracks on the west coast of the south island. Great views, cheap and dependent on times most tracks are relatively quiet in regards to other trampers. I was bought up on the coast there are heaps around. The Creosus old mining track out of Greymouth is a good starting point and can be walked in two days comfortable with Great views especially around September. You will need to get a hut pass that are cheap.
The Great Walks are becoming increasingly popular. They are expensive to maintain, are not run to make a profit and are in fact heavily subsidised by the New Zealand taxpayer. The Department of Conservation are in addition expanding the number of Great Walks at some considerable expense.I did the Routeburn this year with my son and took a cheap lightweight tent, shared the load and camped , which is much cheaper, at two incredible sites. Tent, mat and gas stove added an extra one and half kilos each to our packs but was well worth it. Not being disturbed by snorers, people arriving late or leaving early or being forced to take the least accessible bunk at the end of the day because you are either slower, older or both made the whole experience magical.
I totally agree, camping is much cheaper and also more enjoyable because the huts are quite big and crowded. I also understand why the prices are so high! That still doesn't change the fact that they are high, but I do not blame anyone for them.
Beautiful videography and narration. A most enjoyable video. The watercolors and drawings were awesome as well - another way to capture memories. Be well, stay safe. Cheers.
Great vid. About 3/4 way through you used a water purifier. Some good news; no need. The back country rivers (and especially tributaries) in NZ are pure, wholesome, and germ free. If you are in a farmed area, there may be gardia and other gut-wrenchers. But the back country is pure water.
Key summit! I did that walk up from the car park with two girls from Italy and Spain. They were cool but I hardly knew them. This is like May 15. All the puddles were frozen, beautiful day. Cloudless. After the main bit we went to where the marker/sign thing is to have a look. Then without deciding, we all just stopped talking and sat down, looking around and taking it in. Surrounded by the peaks. An hour passed. By the end, none of us wanted to break the spell. Timeless moments. That is the moment NZ got me :-).
Another well narrated and documented adventure and a big thank you from this North Island Kiwi who will be adding this track onto the Caples (5-6 day hike) and posting in December-19. What were the tablets you added to your water and how do you manage GoPro battery life and memory storage with days of videoing, please? Love the food comparison, it is a choice between light and boring or tasty and heavy packs hiking.
Another awesome section of your hike....Wow Maiu ,, your passion for the trails has become very impressive !! Yourself and Mom have become world travelers.....The hut systems are interesting ,, would be a nice change ,,once in a while....only hut system that I am aware of here in mid-America is nothing like those ,, not only the fancier guided huts ,, but the travelers huts look very nice ,,especially to a tired body.....even with a bit of weather ,, this trail looks amazing ,, can only imagine what shines beyond the clouds........OMG !! .. The YT video is not worth Maiu falling..Please be extra careful when filming on trail , I really enjoy what you are sharing ,but would hate to hear of an injury (or worse) because of not having attention to trail....and YIKES !! Stay back from the cliff edge !! (You gave me a panic attack)...lol... I don't think Mountain House makes "Wine And Cheese" trail packs...Do they ??.........Your Trail time and travels with your Mom are amazing..................Stay Safe and God Bless.........
You both are still looking good .. Salute and Respect on what appears to be quite a strenuous hike. And from what I saw, all of your sketches are great 👍 (but then, I cannot draw to save my life 😊). Beautiful Countryside .. looks like a very well set up Trail. Am looking forward to your next Posting .. Take care 😊.
Gorgeous county and what an experience, you will have to post the full details of what, how to book in advance the shelters etc. And at 19:03 what a lucky escape you had there. Be safe and take care Maia
When my husband and I did this hike on our 30th wedding anniversary we had fog and drizzle develop at Harris Saddle... we walked the Routeburn from the other direction, and got a glimpse of the whole valley briefly before the fog settled. It is a wonderful walk in a beautiful area.
another good vid,, you will have to come back over for another go,, there are several sidetracks and bits i think you would enjoy away from the main track and all the people,, no fancy huts though lol
Another great hiking adventure with your mom and yourself. Very expensive hut for a nights stay , but however, a great video. ( how is Luna ? ) Thank you for sharing and best regards always. Steve from North Canada.
Wow! One day I hope to go there. Since I sent you that challenge & posted on my channel, so many ask who’s this Hiker In Estonia? Power of UA-cam. Thanks
I am really loving your NZ series it’s such a gorgeous place! We go over to NZ to hike in 2021 when I turn 40 & my son turns 10 - he wants that to be our big birthday present for us both. That beef jerky your mum had is my favourite one, I like the BBQ flavour one. Also I have been meaning to ask, what brand umbrella is that you are using?
God they didn't miss you on those beds in that hut, a $140/night per person, that's a bit steep but to be fair they have to maintain them, & they are out in the sticks but even so, I feel $80 would be appropriate.
Im shocked at the prices . I expect you didnt meet to many people from NZ on the trail . Most people from NZ have an aversion for paying to admire their own country. I can watch video,s for free and save my money. I have never walked any of the great walks mainly because Im never organised enough to book a head of time.
The high prices are for foreigns. I know that locals get them cheaper. But yes, if I will go back I'll definitely hike other trails and keep away from the Great Walks 🤷♀️
@@MaiuLunekund I did a bit of investigation , this year was the first year that they had the price differential for locals. The net result in one year was that locals using the tracks jumped by about 13% , it means that NZ children have the chance to see/ enjoy their own country. Nothing against tourists but i like the idea that NZ children have the same opportunity that I had when I was young. Some of the huts are free for kids. www.odt.co.nz/regions/more-kiwis-great-walks-after-price-hike-foreigners

You would be interested in the "how to" video? I thought that the Routeburn has so much info online that mine would be redundant

Good to see you are enjoying it. I seem to remember the weather in March was quite nice.
We were very lucky with the weather indeed!
Maiu, It's a great Idea to do some quick watercolors before leaving your hikes--Really records things properly and more interesting.

I remember doing that track when i was in cadets at school. I was 16, middle of winter in army fatigues. 3 ft snow everywhere.

Spartan Candy Tea is a great idea

What months/dates did this great walk take place?
We hiked it at the end of March!
loo with a view 😎
BTW I flew in May 2nd because the season was ending... $15 a night in the huts :-).
Why did you put that in your water ? Should be clean as to drink as is.
oh yeah, and THERE it is, 30 - 40mm of rain per hour .... THAT's Raining in NZ ;-) ... I hope you didn't get caught out in that unprepared.
