Thank you this is my favourite walk now a 74 year old have done it 3 times in my 40s with a group of ladies 50s a special friend and in my 60s with my husband. As soon as you start walking it is so special the peace, the mountains, forest etc etc etc. love the people you meet. It beats a holiday sitting around a pool. Or queuing up for your meals on a cruise. Take care you two look forward to more.
Thank you Kathy 🙏 Sounds like you've had some great trips and lots of memories on the trail. Would have loved to see what the track was like back then!
I think I've watched this about 10 times. Still Awesome. Only thing better would be to see in person so 7:30am yesterday (on the dot) booked my bunks for April 2024.

So glad to hear that Hamish! ❤️ We did the Greenstone Caples Track the weekend before the Routeburn and that was a good hike as well. Really enjoyed walking through the big open valleys

Great video. Enjoyed the comments. I walked the Routeburn in 1990 when it was a less well developed walk . There were no Great Walk’s then. NZ has become so fashionable to walk. A great side track at the end is Key Summit. This is also a lovely day walk from the The Divide and gives great views.
Would have loved to see the trail back then! It is understandable why NZ is so popular for walking, it is such a beautiful country. I do believe the Great Walks sometimes make it too accessible and people can take it for granted/not prepare correctly We started doing the Key Summit track, but we had a lot of low cloud cover and couldn't see anything, so decided to turn around. Next time!
@@ChrisandDanya On the right day Key Summit is magic. You can combine it with the Greenstone Track with a night at Howden Hut. Sadly I may never walk it again, but each generation has its opportunity. I enjoy seeing your adventure as it reminds me of my time. The country doesn't change just the people. Another great walk is the Overland Track in Tasmania.

We did the Greenstone Caples Track the weekend before the Routeburn, just haven't edited the video yet 😅 We did the Overland Track early in our hiking journey; would love to do it again in winter for a change!
Unbelievably beautiful walk and views. I’m planning my NZ trip and this just went to the top of my must do list. Thanks for your brilliant video work, it really helped.
It's definitely near the top of our favourite hikes in NZ. It's very achievable since there is not too much incline and the distances are relatively short. There is so much to love, can't recommend it enough
@@ChrisandDanya I have to ask, in a planned 3 week trip to New Zealand, which hikes do you think should be on the must do list. Right now I have the Routeburn Track, Hooker Valley Track, Ben Lomond Track and Tongariro Alpine Crossing, though I’m still working on my list.
How long do you have in the South Island and the North Island? We haven't done much in the North Island besides Tongariro, but Egmont National Park looks amazing In the South Island there's almost too much to choose from. Thank you for such kind words Catherine 🤗 It means a lot to know our videos are helping to inspire others outdoor adventures ❤️ Let us know if you have any questions about any of these hikes!
You could have also taken the Green stone Tramp and just taken the little rowboat across the lake to get back to Queenstown. A few more days but a lovely valley walk. You did present a nice video of the tramp(hike), thank you.
We should really start referring to it as tramping while in NZ 😅 The Greenstone/Caples was the first multi-day tramp we did in NZ, we really enjoyed it!
You guys are very fortunate to get through the Harris Saddle area without heavy snow. October can be very fickle in the off season. I have walked that area with the lake frozen over and avalanches off the Harris bluffs. Nice to see professional video of walking the track. Us Kiwis call hiking- Tramping. Thanks for sharing .
Thanks for watching Bruce!! We were very fortunate to not have much snow while crossing the Harris Saddle. There wasn't much snow last winter and the last few weeks were very warm and sunny
Yep, we stayed in the huts! It was the weekend before so all the huts were staffed with wardens already. The huts are actually open year round, but they sometimes take bridges out for the winter which makes doing the tracks harder/more dangerous
We did it at the end of October about a week before the Great Walk season officially started. It wasn't very busy because it was still during Covid and international visitors were still not allowed in the country. I believe it's normally very busy during that time of the year, even though the Great Walk season hasn't officially started.
Absolutely majestic and (once again) beautifully shot & edited. Looks like you had it largely to yourselves-an upside of COVID perhaps? Thanks again for sharing this with us....hopefully it will be our turn next year.
Trail wasn't too busy! We did it the week before the Great Walks season started, so there was definitely not too many people on the trail. We're heading to the Kepler this weekend, then doing the Rakuira the following weekend. Thanks for watching as always Alan! The continued support you show each and everyone one of our videos really means a lot to us, thank you
That scenery is unbelievable! I knew the Routeburn was meant to have some pearler views but that was just next level. Already hanging out for the rest of the series 🤘
It's insane how such an easy hike has such beautiful views. We're doing the Kepler Track next weekend, the Humpridge Track the day after and then the Rakiura Track the following weekend. Excited to see what those trails have in store! Cheers for watching mate, appreciate it!
In this video we were using Panasonic G9 + GoPro 10. We've since upgraded to Panasonic GH6. We use the Leica 12-60mm f2.8-4 and a wide angle 10mm f2 lens
Beautiful photography, what is the camera gear you use? I did this track around 50 years ago (i am old!) .Of the Great Walks, this is my favorite, but each walk has it's own special beauty. Thanks for sharing
For this video we used the Panasonic G9 with Leica 25mm f1.4 and Laowa 10mm f2 We also used a GoPro 7 for some shots. This Great Walk definitely has the best ease of walk to views ratio. We can't wait for the season to start shortly, we have so much planned for this Spring/Summer! It's too bad the Heaphy bridge won't be fixed for quite sometime. It would be nice to be able to do that entire walk, but we may still do parts of it
Amazing video, i remember doing this with my girlfriend 3 years ago (20 years old) we turned up with sneakers / converse and a backpack full of tuna and peanut butter sandwiches. Somehow made it through the thing despite almost getting a search party launched on us. Absoloutely life changing experience.
Yep, it's easy to take these hikes for granted! The important thing is you learn from them 😊 We were all beginners at some point, we've definitely made our fair share of mistakes as well 😅 On the Kepler Track we saw one guy carrying a roller backpack 😂 Thanks for watching Marty! 🙏
Once again guys, great video. Feeling jealous, I'm watching this from Perth in Quarantine! Would love to know If Danya would do a breakdown of the clothes, shoes and packpack she uses on her trips? Thanks
Glad you made it back to Perth safely! We are hoping to return for a visit soon, but it's hard to time when the NZ and WA border openings keep getting pushed back. We'll definitely make a gear related video! I think we've dialled our kit in pretty well and it shouldn't be changing too much in the near future
Wooow guys! Amazing video😍😍😍😍 We really want to go to NZ as soon as possible and this video makes us want to go even more. You are a true inspiration to us 🙏
@@ChrisandDanya Ah that's so lovely to hear! NZ really is, o my. All your videos are gorgeous. 🤩 We can't wait to go to NZ and explore all the beautiful hikes. Take care! 🍀
Thank you for the video! Its amazing! I will be in NZ May 15-30. I have hiked the Kepler Track and am deciding on which hike I want to experience this trip. I am loving the look of the Routeburn Track. How much does it cost to stay in the huts? How many nights did you stay in the huts?
Kepler is a fantastic trail! Love the ridge walking on day 2. I think Routeburn is equally as good, if not better. I think it's $35 per night to stay in the huts. Generally it's hiked over 3 days with 2 nights in the huts. First night would be either Routeburn Flats hut or Routeburn Falls hut and the 2nd night would be at Lake McKenzie hut. You can also link up with part of the Greenstone Caples track if you want to make it a loop. That would increase it by 1 or 2 nights
@@ChrisandDanya yes I love Kepler. I hiked that on my last trip. It snowed 14” the day before and we hiked. Yes the ridge line was best part. I will def check out routeburn.
Thank you for your wonderful videos. These have been helping me immensely while planning my hiking trip to New Zealand. I am booked to hike Routeburn Track in early March and a little worried about the part (I think Harris Saddle) that looks very exposed to altitude. I was wondering how long it takes to hike through that section and did the trail feel too narrow? I am a regular hiker but tend to get a little nervous during very exposed sections.
I believe the Harris Saddle is the section from Routeburn Falls Hut to the Harris Saddle Emergency Shelter. That section is wide open and very beautiful. Track is really well maintained and you won't have any issue unless some bad weather comes in, or there is snow. The section leaving the Emergency Shelter to Lake McKenzie Hut crosses the exposed Hollyford Face. That section is very exposed, but the track is still very well maintained and you've got the mountain to your left/back at all times for protection. We were up there when it was very windy and it was completely fine. The track never felt too narrow or sketchy. You'll have an absolutely wonderful time and that whole section from Routeburn Falls hut to Lake McKenzie is stunning 😊
@@ChrisandDanya thank you so much. i truly appreciate it. i also watched your Mueller Hut hike video (Mt. Cook) parts of it feel a little sketchy? (would not attempt on a rainy day).
I'd say the only part that is a bit sketchy is where it turns to skree near the top of the Mueller Hut Route, probably wouldn't want to do that part in bad weather. Although to be honest, you probably wouldn't want to do any of that track in bad weather because it's very exposed
@@ChrisandDanyathank you so much once again for your patience and answering all my questions. i watched almost all of your beautiful videos. I see that you have already been to Japan for some amazing hikes but if you plan to come visit again (I live in Japan), I would be happy to answer any questions you may have :)
We hiked it at the very end of October; the weekend before the Great Walk season started. Wasn't much snow around because we had a very mild winter that year
Hi guys first of all thanks for the amazing video , I booked the lake hut on December 23rd, as it was the only hit available, I'm just wondering is it possible to start from routeburn track shelter and make to lake campsite in oneday?
Thanks for watching 🤗 that's great you got a booking! The distances on the Routeburn are relatively short and the incline up to the falls hut not too steep by NZ standards. You also have daylight savings in play so it's light out quite late (sunset ~9pm for dec). It would be about 21 km for that first day to Mackenzie so would still recommend starting as early as possible so you can still take in all the things to see. You can probably make good time along the initial flatter section so you can take it a bit slower across the pass.
Very easy to follow and no navigation skills required, just a bit of fitness. The hardest part is securing a spot on the trail! bookings.doc.govt.nz/Saturn/Facilities/SearchViewGW.aspx
It is "weather sealed" or "splash proof", but not waterproof. I am a bit careless with it haha I've started putting a shower cap over it from some extra protection
Well the touring twins have struck again with an absolute corker of a video. The kiwi govt should be giving you pair a really good commission on the way your promoting Kiwi land. You know something Chris your one very lucky young bugger coming to Oz and meeting up with with such an incredible shela like Dana. Mate she sticks to you like a wet Tee shirt. Crikey mate seeing a young couple enjoying all the travelling and hiking you two do together really goes past demonstrating what marriage should be, but enters into that beautiful arena of what true male/female love relationships are all about and should be cherished as such. Of course there are the cloudy periods, which is only human nature, but sharing a neutral bond and enjoying this great world of nature together really epitomises what enjoying life is all about. Your hiking videos have become better and really promote what I've said above. I wish you both the all best in health, wealth and prosperity for the future.
🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️ You are absolutely right Col, I am a very lucky man! Really appreciate the kind words, it means a lot mate. Thank you for the continued support, hopefully we'll bump into you on the trail someday! Happy hiking 🥾🏔️🌄⛰️
Right at the end of October, before the start of the Great Walk season. It was a pretty mild winter and really warm the few weeks leading up to our hike, so not much snow around
Probably the Routeburn personally. Distances are eaasy, views are fantastic. The hardest thing about the hike is getting there and back and that's pretty easy to organize
I just have a Peak Design Capture Clip on the shoulder strap of a standard Osprey hiking pack. I rarely actually put my camera inside of my bag My little fanny pack around my waist carries extra batteries and 2 extra lenses since I use a M4/3 system We really need to do a video on our gear... Haha
@@ChrisandDanya That's a great idea! I always have my camera around my neck and carry a regular backpack and am forever stopped and changing everything. We do hikes with dogs and 2 kids (aged 6yo and 2yo) and just started content creating for youtube (Exploring Aotearoa) and it's a lot of equipment to juggle lol!
Definitely know the struggle! Would highly recommend the Peak Design Capture Clip, it works really well with the reinforced shoulder straps of a hiking bag. You get used to the weight pretty quick and it feels very secure. If it starts to rain, I use a shower cap and put it over the camera. All my gear is weather sealed regardless tho
Beautiful video and pacing. I understand the attempt at standard production in this video, but the music is actually distracting and kind of inappropriate to the entire purpose of these beautiful walks. It's essentially noise pollution on all this beauty. A bit of narration sans the music would have been perfection. Video is A+.
Appreciate the honest feedback Devon! Music is an integral part to all of our videos, but I understand our music choices aren't not for everyone. I agree a couple of the song choices in this video could have been better 😅 I've tried doing videos without music, but I don't find it satisfying

Thank you Adda 🙏
We did the track at the end of October 2021, right before the Great Walk season started
@@ChrisandDanya Thank you. Could you stay in the huts and use the facilities at that time or did you camp at each location?
Yep, we stayed in the huts! It was the weekend before so all the huts were staffed with wardens already. The huts are actually open year round, but they sometimes take bridges out for the winter which makes doing the tracks harder/more dangerous
@@ChrisandDanya thank you. My wife and I are working our way through your UA-cam walks - great content and great inspiration. Cheers Adam
Thanks Adam 🙏❤️
This looked incredible, thank you so much for sharing. I can't want to do this myself. What time of year did you guys go and how busy was it?
We did it at the end of October about a week before the Great Walk season officially started. It wasn't very busy because it was still during Covid and international visitors were still not allowed in the country.
I believe it's normally very busy during that time of the year, even though the Great Walk season hasn't officially started.

Thank you 🙏❤️
Absolutely majestic and (once again) beautifully shot & edited.
@@ChrisandDanya Man so jealous haha that sounds bloody epic. Enjoy!
Hi, guys great vlog. may I ask what camera gear you use?
In this video we were using Panasonic G9 + GoPro 10. We've since upgraded to Panasonic GH6. We use the Leica 12-60mm f2.8-4 and a wide angle 10mm f2 lens
Beautiful photography, what is the camera gear you use? I did this track around 50 years ago (i am old!) .Of the Great Walks, this is my favorite, but each walk has it's own special beauty. Thanks for sharing
For this video we used the Panasonic G9 with Leica 25mm f1.4 and Laowa 10mm f2
We also used a GoPro 7 for some shots.
This Great Walk definitely has the best ease of walk to views ratio.
We can't wait for the season to start shortly, we have so much planned for this Spring/Summer!
It's too bad the Heaphy bridge won't be fixed for quite sometime. It would be nice to be able to do that entire walk, but we may still do parts of it
@@ChrisandDanya Thanks
Amazing video, i remember doing this with my girlfriend 3 years ago (20 years old) we turned up with sneakers / converse and a backpack full of tuna and peanut butter sandwiches. Somehow made it through the thing despite almost getting a search party launched on us. Absoloutely life changing experience.
Yep, it's easy to take these hikes for granted! The important thing is you learn from them 😊
We were all beginners at some point, we've definitely made our fair share of mistakes as well 😅
On the Kepler Track we saw one guy carrying a roller backpack 😂
Thanks for watching Marty!
You are a true inspiration to us 🙏
Thank you guys!! 🙏❤️ We love your Instagram content so much!
NZ is unbelievable. It's an adventurers paradise
@@ChrisandDanya Ah that's so lovely to hear! NZ really is, o my. All your videos are gorgeous. 🤩 We can't wait to go to NZ and explore all the beautiful hikes. Take care! 🍀
NZ borders open internally in July I believe!
@@ChrisandDanya Thanks for letting us know. We will check the government website! 😱
What month did you guys go? Love the video!
Went at the end of October, I believe the weekend before the Great Walk season officially started
Sounds like a tough trip, but the landscape would have been stunning!
@@ChrisandDanya yes it was an amazing hike.
Great video 👍☺️. You did the track end of October? I will do it next January ☺️😉
Thanks for watching!
We did it weekend before the Great Walk season started and loved it!
Thank you Burcu ❤️
We are planning another visit to Japan in 2024 for 3 months, but have yet to finalize dates
Great video thank you , what time of year did you walk this track?
We hiked it at the very end of October; the weekend before the Great Walk season started.
Wasn't much snow around because we had a very mild winter that year
Great video! What time off there year was it recorded?
Thank you Felipe!
We hiked this at the end of October 2021, the weekend before the Great Walk season started
@@ChrisandDanya thanks for the great tips , Chris and Danya. 💚💚
Oh my gosh I loved this video. Is the track easy to follow? Do you need any navigation skills or bouldering skills?
Very easy to follow and no navigation skills required, just a bit of fitness. The hardest part is securing a spot on the trail! bookings.doc.govt.nz/Saturn/Facilities/SearchViewGW.aspx
Thank you, we are waiting and hopefully we can get one this time around :)
Superb Wonderful. Is your camera waterproof? Noticed it was hanging on your right shoulder even though it was raining.
It is "weather sealed" or "splash proof", but not waterproof. I am a bit careless with it haha
I've started putting a shower cap over it from some extra protection
"Moss level good, top stuff"
😂😂😂
🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️
You are absolutely right Col, I am a very lucky man!
Really appreciate the kind words, it means a lot mate.
Thank you for the continued support, hopefully we'll bump into you on the trail someday!
Happy hiking 🥾🏔️🌄⛰️
Awesome video what month did you guys do this in?
Right at the end of October, before the start of the Great Walk season. It was a pretty mild winter and really warm the few weeks leading up to our hike, so not much snow around
@@ChrisandDanya p
Which did you like better!? Routeburn or Kepler…!?
Probably the Routeburn personally. Distances are eaasy, views are fantastic. The hardest thing about the hike is getting there and back and that's pretty easy to organize
Why haven't I walked this? 😱
Highly recommend it!
What bag do you use that holds your camera? I NEED it!!
I just have a Peak Design Capture Clip on the shoulder strap of a standard Osprey hiking pack. I rarely actually put my camera inside of my bag
My little fanny pack around my waist carries extra batteries and 2 extra lenses since I use a M4/3 system
We really need to do a video on our gear...
Is this all taken handheld??
Handheld + some tripod shots
which month did you go? 😊
We went at the very end of October, right before the Great Walk season officially opened
@@ChrisandDanya nice!! thank you!!
When is the best time to do this walk?
During the Great Walk season, Nov - April
Beautiful video and pacing. I understand the attempt at standard production in this video, but the music is actually distracting and kind of inappropriate to the entire purpose of these beautiful walks. It's essentially noise pollution on all this beauty. A bit of narration sans the music would have been perfection. Video is A+.
Appreciate the honest feedback Devon! Music is an integral part to all of our videos, but I understand our music choices aren't not for everyone. I agree a couple of the song choices in this video could have been better 😅
I've tried doing videos without music, but I don't find it satisfying
Boringgggg.
Doc doesn't supply ky jelly so watch out for routeburn
🤣
