It took me 12 years to register in the Canadian medical council as a doctor and I was ready to apply to work there, but they informed me later that only doctors with the green card or permanent residency can work there, I have changed my plans and I am working in Spain now, the bureaucracy in Canada is legendary.

My wife and I moved To Cobourg Area in 2015. We just now got a Family Doctor 7 years later . It is absolutely ridiculous and the Ontario and federal Governments have done nothing to fix the problem . Our Doctors and Nurses are underpaid and overworked. Universal Healthcare is a lie in Canada now.

as a solo practictioner, the fees go to paying rent, medical supplies and equipment, staff before you are paid. Nurse practioner costs have escalated with the shortage and costs of medical supplies but the payment from government has continuously decreased. The government does not want to run clinics and pay salaries because it costs alot to run clinics. Most family physicians spend 60% of their time on adminstrative work which is exhausting, this leaves less time for patient care and then there is the time to run the business side of the practice. Reviewing charts and results from 1500 to 3000 patients everytime they have a test or go to hospital or another facility takes time and it is unpaid under the fee for service model. The government hasnt allowed physicians to join the FHO system in Ontario because it costs them more so there is no pay for the admin work, only $35 per patient you see in the office. Alot of services and procedures are no longer covered.

The reason so many doctors are leaving is because their overheads in the clinics are exceeding income, staff costs have gone up, rent has gone up and equipment but over the last 10 years fee payments have gone down. In addition if you bill the government for fee for service, at least a third will be unpaid, then you have to get a billing company to chase after the government to get pain and they are unreachable. Alot of clinics are closing down because their costs of running a business is higher that what the government is paying. this is in addition to burnout from being overworked with the number of patients you have to take care of- a family dr looks after 1500 to 3000 patients and has to review reports and tests from every place the patient goes too and this administrative work is done after hours and is unpaid in a fee for service model. $35 per patient seen does not cover these costs.

I am absolutely gutted watching this. Growing up we were fed the propaganda that doctors are overpaid and didn't want to see too many patients due to salary cap. But the reality is that there's so much more than they can handle. My wife and I were using virtual visits which helped a lot during pandemic but now they cut that. Our virtual doc has no practice to fall back to. We have no doc to fall back to. They say its to encourage doctors to see patients in house, but how does that work when Find a Doctor service cannot find us a doctor within a 2 hour drive. Which is why they referred us to virtual. The decision makers are intentionally tanking our medical services.

It's pretty simple, they should not be entrepreneur, running a business is a job all by itself, it just make no sense.

We, also, need to fast-track accreditation of new immigrants that were doctors in their country. A G7 country (like Canada) should

Drs are humans! We need more Drs but not only Drs any medical personnel ! Our immigration policy does not help Drs from other counties that want to come to Canada ! Once a foreign Dr comes to Canada they are asked to practically go back to school to prove they are “Drs” 😵‍💫I worked w a Dr from China that is working as an Optician because it will take too long to prove that she is a dr! not fair😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

I have a family doctor, but can’t get an appointment with him. He’s booked until January and they aren’t opening his calendar for the New Year as yet. I was told to go to the emerge. That was in early November.

There are many internationally trained doctors and dentists who are highly capable but can't get past the licensing process which takes too much time, too much money and too much paperwork. If the licensing process is improved, the supply of family doctors can increase which is great for people and the government benefits with higher tax revenues too.

The short sightedness of Canada's immigration policy. Bring in thousands of people but don't prepare for them.

My family doctor, who's now retired, was by far my best experience in all of health care. Shout out to Dr Hartman from Edmonton. After experiencing health care after having a family doctor all my life. Its like night and day, those medicenter rando docs just dont do it... a nurse practitioner could be used in that role - and they would do a comparable is not better job.

Why is so hard to find a psychiatrist in canada who isn't primarily a drug dealer for R&D at Bayer?

  • @AmanSS890

They see 40-50 patients a day they have to rush through the paper work make Shute they get everything right and also not screw up on top of that. I do t blame people for not wanting to be a family doctor. Most doctors personal lives suffer because of the work stress

In my point of view, it seems a money game. GP wants more money for the work. Gov't is not accepting it.

So many Canadians studied abroad like Carribean Med school... When they come back to Canada, only a few got match to canadian residency program.. Most of them are in the US now where they match for residency. They are also paid well because US healthcare is a billion dollar industry.. Canadian Healthcare is a billion dollar debt.. 😟

Sounds like the paperwork is the problem. I can relate because this looks like my day too.
