It's tragically ironic that the guy screwing over the X-Men in real life is just as cartoonishly racist as the villains that try to screw over the X-Men in the comics!
You guys are so fixed on race, you forget about heroes like blade, or spawn. It's a superhero movie not political points for people, just enjoy the movies like a fan would.

@@ArcaJ It's rumored they're bringing Anson Mount back as Black Bolt in Doctor Strange 2 so that's good news. But i think they're gonna retcon Inhumans show out of the MCU and honestly thank god.
They relationship between humans, mutants and inhumans could have been amazing in the comics. The inhumans were somewhat viewed better than mutant as they have a millennias old society, history, and culture, thus could have been seen as being more legitimate, civilized, and controlled. They were likely seen as Exotic foreigners. The mutants are often seen as unpredictable, chaotic elements who have can't be trust as well as an easy scapegoat. They are disenfranchised, marginalized, and fear fellow citizens.
I completely agree. And hey, this can completely work in the movies, where they can stage a really cool arc, where it is inhumans vs. mutants vs. avenger and other super heroes.
JamCal-X Yeah was partially why the Inhumans could never replace Mutants as an allegory for minorities. The Inhumans were isolationists who created an entire slave race (Alpha Primitives) just to serve them. Having those same characters basically gas the local minority allegories to death had loads of unfortunate implications. Really when you remember that Magneto was a Holocaust Survivor it should really tell you how tone deaf the editorial behind these decisions were.
@@ryancarson6962 the inhumans seem more like a metaphor for wealth and power. It may do nothing or it may turn you into a disgusting monster. It may make it so looking at others of society without wealth and power as being lesser people.
@@conserztasfia0078 But where he got that amount of adamantium? I thought all of it was destroyed in X-2 and the rest in The Wolverine. That's a cool theory still. Well who cares, X-movies are full of plot holes and they still can be entertaining.
Now with Ms. Marvel on the way, you can now expect this show to be retconed when Marvel Studious reboots and recast the Royal Family when time comes. Also, still can't believe this is on freakin' Disney+, I would've banished this to the shadow realm.
Who's to say that they keep Ms. Marvel an inhuman? They could as well make her a mutant or eternal. Or keep her an inhuman and never mention the royal family ever. Were they ever mentioned in the shield show?
even tho Kevin Feige wouldn't know a good marvel story line if the original founders of marvel came in and beat his ass because he is doing nothing to make Marvel into a better movie company, he is recasting male characters and female characters as reversed gender roles and ruining the name of Marvel. For Example he was the one who hired that hack who turned Captain America into Captain Hydra then because the board told feige if you don't fix this your done he turned around and threw the hack under the bus like yeah i hired him but its his fault. he was also behind a few other shit shows of Marvel's comic past that made stan lee shake his head in disbelief. another example feige is trying to ruin the Eternals and The Character Adam Warlock by gender swapping the character into a female for the movie version js Kevin Feige wasn't the one who realized and Bob Iger always knew gotta waste money to make money otherwise the russo brothers again who ruined infinity war by having the film pulled a less than a week after release to take away the Power stones glow which was the only way that Thanos actually overpowered the hulk and said oh because thanos is naturally stronger than the hulk thats how he beat the hulk when thats a factual lie the only way thanos could ever overpower the hulk is via an enhancement or something like that my point has been made don't like it to bad because its actual fact
Unfortunately Multiverse of Madness was a terrible movie made for the sole purpose of basterdizing a decent character into a cartoon supervillain to justify writing her out of the series and writing in the X Men. Because the MCU is managed by clowns who can't stick to a consistent, competent writer to develop a consistent, competent story.
Just to be clear: Inhumans, an elitist royal family, gassed the minority allegory of their universe and replaced them. Hmmm... what does that sound like?
Maximus had some great loki-like momemts. Just wish his character had been better written at the end. He had the potential of a great anti-hero. Or reedemed villain. The mcu is full of wasted potential.
I was never a fan of Inhumans in the MCU anyways because it felt like an X-men/ Thor rip off. I never really liked the characters and the only real thing they add is Inhumans but again they're just the same as Mutants.

The thing with Medusa’s hair being shaved is that it could have been a genuinely emotional moment if it happened later in a better show. As for quality Inhumans in the MCU? I think Agents of SHIELD does them justice
Digimaniac X Yeah, I legitimately enjoyed the inhumans in AoS, they were interesting and felt far more distinct from the X-men than how they were used in other stuff. Everywhere else I saw the inhumans... I don't know, they felt goofy and weird and... well boring. Partially because they were basically being shoved down my throat in the hopes I'd like them better than the X-men, which I grew up with. Honestly the distraction ploy was so transparent I coudve used it as a window. In AoS, though, they were interesting, they were (compatibly) believable. I loved Lash, Lincoln was fun in both the seasons he showed up, and Sky discovering her powers/lineage felt meaningful and sound. And this is coming from someone who didn't particularly like what AoS did after a while.
I thought the Medusa's hair thing was funny because they really don't establish a good reason why she cared so much. If she were to use it for everything for at least a couple episodes, then it got shaved off, I feel that would work better. But it came off as a bit too funny for me.
What got me with the Hair thing was "umm Why doesn't she Just Choose to Grow them back? Her whole thing in the Comics is how she Can Flawlessly Control her hair, Including Length, we Regularly See her Hair pass from Like 2 Meters in Length, to Like 20 in the Span of one Panel, what's stopping her from turning that less-than-a-Centimeter Stubble into a River of Red Locks to strangle the Dumbass who thought that would work?"
Nah apparently they'll reintroduce them on the Ms. Marvel Disney+ series. And according to few rumors, Quicksilver's actor might be the new Maximus for that show.
@@uncannydcmarvelous5732 no, quicksilver should return in Dr. Strange multiverse of madness as a resurrected quicksilver and he should have all his memories from the past. It could happen, characters I comics never stay dead forever, so it's likely quicksliver will return in some way
When Inhumans was introduced in Agents of Shield, I was so excited! I’m not a comic reader, so I thought they were so cool in AOS, Daisy Johnson’s development and character arc, Hive’s history and influence into Hydra, the equivalent of the terrigen bomb going off into the ocean and causing new Inhumans to emerge in the world, Yo-yo Rodriguez and her transformation. But then Inhumans the show came and barely had any connection with it. I was so sure that they were gonna meet with Shield sometime soon, but never did. It’s sad how AOS did a much better job at handling the Inhumans than their actual show was.
Fun Fact: AOS and Inhumans wasnt made by Marvel Studios(Kevin Feigi) but by another separate Marvel company ran by Ik pearlmutter who pretends to be all connected to the films when in reality Marvel Studios doesnt even consider them canon.
I could only get through the first episode and the effects of Lockjaw and his teleportation were the best part of it. And the fact they cut off Medusa's hair was very obviously for budget reasons.
MAXIMUS WAS RIGHT!!!! Also SPOILER ALERT: The big reveal in the finale implies that Black Bolt had been stockpiling weapons for some kind of was against Thanos presumably in Infinity War and eventually Endgame. That would have been very interesting to see how he knew Thanos would be coming to Earth before everyone except the audience, his confrontation with the mad titan, and an army of Inhumans fighting in the final battle. What might have been...
Honestly, the more hindsight I have for this series, the more angry I get at it as a whole. Even though they wrote themselves to be continued, they burned way too quick through all their characters, killing off many. It was obnoxious especially as all the characters and their abilities were underused in the first place. It was trash but it had potential. I think they could reboot them in a FF movie as the antagonists turned allies by the end, or they could do a Disney+ show... but no more shoestring budget junk! But even so, this show had a pretty big budget, it just seemed like heads were taking a big paycheck out of it rather than investing it into the show!
The problem of this show was that it was made by people who didn't understand the Inhumans and didn't really care to tell the story in the writing. Agents of SHIELD operates on a shoestring budget too, but they got writers who genuinely care about the story and they have made it work for 7 seasons to the point that Agents of SHIELD is the highest rated MCU TV show on Rotten Tomatoes. If the Inhumans story had been given to the Agents of SHIELD writers, there's no doubt in my mind even with the low budget, those writers would have made it work. The Inhumans is the victim of bad writing, bad business decisions, and little care for the product, the only people who seemed to actually care are the actors who desperately tried to imbue ethos into their characters and elevate the horribly stale dialogue, if nothing else, this cast deserves a second chance.
The cast (at least Black Bolt, Medusa and Maximus) were really excited about the idea of doing the Inhumans justice, but they got SO screwed. Shame really, all of them could have done great job (just read/listen some of the interviews around the time, Anson Mount created an entire language, and he did it himself, cause Marvel promised him a linguist and they cheaped out at the last second, so he -because he wanted the sign language to be original- had to do it himself)
Nothing Kathleen Kennedy was ever accused of doing or being will be as bad as what Ike Perlmutter has actually done to Marvel properties. Ike is also a god awful person who people HATE working for.

As much as I like the MCU, I hate that Disney and Marvel Push those versions as the defininative version of the characters. The Comics get ignored and all the animated shows take on the MCU art style, are written poorly and animated cheaply. As a side note, How does a multi billion dollar corporation put out zero animated movies. WB is killing it, Disney is killing me.
See, at the start of the series Maximus was easily one of the best villains of the entire MCU. He was clever, charming, relatable and had a very valid reason for wanting to achieve his goal. So while the whole "secretly looking for more power" thing was added later, it's pretty apparent it wasn't really part of his original goal and it was something that was simply added to the show once they realized just how much more likable he was than the actual protagonists, who are all a bunch of racist elitists. _And they don't change._ The proper way to handle things (and indeed, the one the whole setup of the show seemed to be building towards) would be to have the heroes learning humility by being forced to work alongside humans while showing the villain increasingly lose sight of his original goal once he takes a liking to the power and sees it threatened. Instead, the show has the "heroes" ocassionally make friends with one or two humans for personal reasons but still see themselves as superiors until the very end and showing no signs of intending to be better leaders to their own people, while the villain just out of the blue starts behaving like a caricature for no established reason (other than the aforementioned "making the heroes look better in comparison" deal). I still didn't hate the series either. There are a few good characters to root for here and there, and some fun interactions. Also, there are a few actors who definitely care for the characters and the story (did you know, for instance, that the actor who plays Black Bolt created his own full-fledged sign language for the character?). It's really a shame that it all was handled so poorly.
The thing is... that's actually how it is in the comics. The Inhuman royals are in no way likable. Medusa even started out as a supervillain. For the most part you were not suppose to like them. Inhumans was an American comic with a royal family in it. Americans in general do not like royals and can not relate to them. We just like to see them fall. The Inhumans as a faction were created to fall for entertainment. At some point that was forgotten.
He's literally called Maximus the Mad. In fact, this part of the show is actually lifted pretty directly from a comics storyline. It's entirely intentional and planned. The Royal Family... and Black Bolt in particular... have always been presented as pretty dodgy characters. Again, it's one of the reasons why the Inhumans property is nothing like the mutant one and never should have been forced to act as a substitute.
@@raptor4840 No, they don't. Americans loathe monarchy as a political structure but treat the Elizabeth II and co. as an old money version of the Kardashians. And, in any case, obsession and hate aren't opposites at all.
You can tell he made this before "The Eternals" came out. Although ironically, I think THAT was a great example of a feature film that would have been much better as a TV show.
@@concept5631 Yeah.... I have mixed feelings- I can relate to feeling overwhelmed by it and feel that way sometimes, but I still rather enjoy the MCU. I used to enjoy reading comics but didn't have a ton of time nor patience to read them as a kid, so I wasn't as well read in comics as some of my friends. But now... I used to own a book from the David Letterman show that boasted: "It's like watching TV in convenient book form!" The MCU is like "reading comics in convenient video forms!!!"
Another thing about Perlmutter: he owns a toy company. He wanted to make a movie with a lot of characters so that he could make a lot of toys. Since they didn’t have the rights to the X-Men, he decided to use the Inhumans. Also, Marvel is making a Ms. Marvel TV show for Disney+, so there is a chance the Inhumans could make a return in some form.
I have this crazy fan theory that by the time Ms Marvel comes out, Marvel will have decided that Inhumans aren't commercially viable and it's not worth reminding people of the TV show and so they will make Ms Marvel a mutant. This is my graveyard theory, if it comes true I have no idea how I will react.
Perlmutter's toy company, Marvel Toys (formerly Toy Biz) went out of business in 2007, before the MCU even started. Toys based on Marvel properties have been made by Hasbro since then.
The thing is, Supergirl, Catwoman, and Elektra all bombed not because they had female protagonists, but because the films themselves were poorly received by critics and the audience.
It's so funny looking back on this video now when not only did Marvel get the X-Men back, but the moment they did they basically gave the entire social hierarchy and customs system of the Inhumans to mutants for the Krakoa era and then did a miniseries all about Black Bolt killing basically every Inhuman that wasn't still on Earth
Haven't watched yet, but I also feel the idea of the Inhumans "replacing" the Mutants during Disney's embargo of them in other mediums, may have had an impact. Since, the X-Men are deeply beloved by Older Fans, the Inhumans kinda felt like a slap to the face. That's just what I remember from YT comments back when the Inhumans were leaked getting a film in the MCU lineup.
THIS. They tried to make the inhumans into the discount X-Men and most X-Men fans wouldn't give the inhumans a chance. Marvel tried to erase history so most older fans decided to break from this retcon era.
So you mean to tell me that Ike wanted the ONE character that would never agree to the Markovia Accords, to be the main hero supporting it?! One of many reasons I can see why they rid themselves of him 🤦🏾♂️
Wouldn't he tho? The whole point of the hulk is that it's a uncontrollable beast and banner doesn't like being him, so it would make 100% sense he wanting to be watched over. Now im not saying that the guy isn't a prick for not wanting to put RDJ because it costs money to be good but you get my point.
@@Deluxe20_TFMA You have to remember, despite how much Banner hates being the Hulk, he hates the idea of the government using the Hulk even more. His character is about trying to keep the secret to creating an unstoppable army of walking nukes away from people, and signing the Sokovia Accords is basically giving yourself over to the US military.
If anyone is wondering, don't worry, Medusa got her hair back in the comics. It wasn't even cut. She briefly lost her powers, her hair fell out as a side effect (which at that point was probably a good thing since she'd otherwise be dragging a massive mound of dead hair), got her powers back later and her hair immediately grew back. I just find the idea that it can be cut at all kind of confusing. In the comics, it's been shown to be strong enough to carry her entire body weight by itself and, yeah, brought down a space ship. It's pretty strong. Surely then, it's strong enough to survive a pair of scissors? Admittedly, I never watched the show so I might be wrong. But those of you who did, was it genuinely just shaved off like traditional hair? If it was, that's got to be something unique to the show which just further demonstrates how underwhelming the powers were in that show.
Medusa's head was shaved by Maximus at one point in the comics. In the late nineties (?) marvel knights run. I think they were trying to callback to that. The difference being of course, that that was well written and had emotional impact.
The show is really hard to get through on a rewatch, but I really did enjoy it back in the day, and it's not horrible, it's just the worst product of the MCU. That being said, AoS did the Inhumans a million times better than the actual Inhumans show. Although I loved the casting for Medusa, Black Bolt and Maximus and I hope they keep those actors.
WhiteRaven696 I did. The “heroes” enforce a brutal caste system where if you don’t get powers after Terrigenesis or do get powers but aren’t considered “good enough” you are forced into slave labor for life. What doesn’t help is that the Royal Family are extremely unlikable, for a key example here just look at how they treat Mordis, a Inhuman who was locked up for life simply for accidentally killing people after Terrigenesis, and trust me you WILL hate them after what you see. Overall the “heroes” were unlikable and the supposed “villains” were infinitely more likable and sympathetic. If you enjoy it, good for you, but as for me I see pretty clearly why this series failed: it’s because no one wanted to continue watching these characters at all.
The problem with this show was never the casting, this show had a great cast of actors that could have made for incredibly compelling TV, unfortunately the actors were saddled with horribly stale and boring dialogue, and writers who clearly didn't know what kind of story they needed to make. Characters were written all over the place, you can see the actors trying to desperately inject ethos into their characters and try to elevate the story, but they can only do so much. We could have gotten a political intrigue sort of show, yet they drop any pretense of that.
Great review! Don't know if you've seen it, but Agents of Shield in several seasons does a far better job of exploring the "mutant hysteria" angle with Inhumans than the actual Inhumans movie ever did.
I can confirm that everything Drake pointed is in fact true. I used to follow the behind the scenes of Inhumans years ago not because I was a fan but rather cuz of Ike Pearlmutter's push to have it replace X-Men. It was a complete disaster and I watched Inhumans crash & burn at the end of it. What's sad about it with the TV Show failing they actually screwed Inhumans' chance from reaching out to a more mainstream audience. Inhumans was never like the X-Men and should of never been treated as such. It already had its own identity and they should've stuck to making a movie with Vin Deisal like they had originally planned. Now it's unclear if the MCU would ever give them another shot. :/
@Deathmare235, he wouldn't talk? Black Bolt is a character who doesn't talk for obvious reasons unless he has to, and it's not uncommon for the same actor to play two different characters.
What a fascinating time period of Marvel trying to find a replacement for the X-Men by using the Inhuman’s that failed miserably. I think the reason why it failed is because people didn’t want something related to the X-Men, they WANTED the X-Men wholesale.
9:26 animator and VFX graduate here um yeah no your right that is very very not right .1 the sky is clearly a dome with a sky image mapped to it .2 when real footage and CGI elements are combined in a moving camera shot the live footages movements are replicated in 3D so they both are moving at the same pace here though wow it looks like they just guessed where the actors should be they don't match the moving environment at all infact it looks like the physical camera filming the actors was static when shooting but the 3d camera moves a lot more .3 in all vfx projects Film or TV there is always colour grading and colour correction to make sure the colours match all elements here though nope not at all
You nailed it at 11:50 - it wasn't a great show, but it was NOT as terrible as everybody makes it out to be. That said, Perlmutter is trash and completely messed it up. Even an alien who has never seen humans before could tell Don Cheadle & Terrence Howard apart

It’s a shame that some of these actors are actually good but are overshadowed by incompetence of directors and CEO’s luckily the blackbolt actor is in doctor strange
In retrospect it's kind of surprising they didn't try to ram an Inhuman or two into that game, too. Would've been extra funny too considering how important the X-Men are to that franchise.
A couple of thoughts on the Inhumans in general, keeping in mind that I really did enjoy the video: I think the Terrigen bomb was a really neat idea. The whole idea of taking something that is *usually* voluntary, and thrusting it upon people makes for really good storytelling. Without it, we wouldn't have gotten Ms. Marvel. One arc in her book tackles how different people react upon finding out they're Inhuman/Nuhuman. Is it their duty to help people in a very Spider-Man, power and responsibility sense? Are they better than humans? Do they deserve to be ruled by a royal family, or is that outdated? Medusa and Lockjaw play an important part in some of her early stories, and even Wolverine passes her name on to Medusa when he suspects she might be Inhuman after working with her (I feel Wolverine has often been a Mutant who is usually pretty chill with other super groups, depending on the story of course). I think the iteration of Secret Warriors with Ms. Marvel, Quake, Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur, Inferno, Karnak, and Magik was really good as well. It highlighted the tensions between Inhumans, humans, and Mutants. Magik served as a great ally despite being a mutant, and gained the trust of the other Secret Warriors, and there were both moments of cooperation and moments of conflict with the x-men. I think these tensions are exemplified by the Exiles character Khan. She mentions that the Inhuman colony in Jersey City is threatened equally by humans, mutants, and sentinels. And really, looking back on it, even in the late 60's there was still some element of the Inhumans not being accepted by humans. There was an issue of The Amazing Spider-Man where Medusa came down to Earth to see if humans were ready to accept her. Now, being a Silver Age Spider-Man story, of course 90% of the conflict was due to misunderstandings, but I think that kind of came with the territory at the time. But I thinks it makes sense why they would be feared as well. Just because terrigenesis is voluntary/planned, doesn't mean it's not an important part of their culture. And it's this aspect of their culture that gives them their immense powers, which are feared by the public. And that dynamic is something I think the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. show handled pretty well (and obviously The Inhumans didn't) sorry everyone for the kinda long comment, and also this is not in any way a direct criticism of Drake or the video, just a few thoughts in the defense of the Inhumans as a concept
Death of X really didn't help matters, either. I remember people being pretty pissed that they were replacing Mutants with Inhumans. The books (Including All New Inhumans) were good, but thanks to Marvel refusing to market these stories (and the screw up that was this show) All New Inhumans got cancelled. I got into these people thanks to channels like this talking about them, and the "Inhumanity" run of the Inhumans. It was cool, as was the Karnak solo run. I think Perlmutter REALLY upset some fans hardcore when Death of X happened. Any one else find it funny that Ms. Marvel books would have these small banners for the show on the second page?
Really there isn't a difference between mutants and inhumans other than how long they have been around and the trigger in question. I want to take the X-men's living island, have it crash and merge with the inhumans capital then teleport that into Camelot and sever the connection between Camelot and our realm. The story is going nowhere, mutants and inhumans are basically the same thing, and neither would stick out at all in a place so full of magic as Camelot.
Trust Magik? Are you mad? You have seen what she did to that in Secret Warriors! Also I really appreciate that Karnak found a kindred spirit in Lunella of all people.
Joey Tabora The issue there is that the Terrigen Bomb just made the Inhumans a blatant poor man’s Mutants due to how blatantly obvious it was and only took away what made the Inhumans unique and different from the Mutants. Yes Kamala is an Inhuman but that had little bearing over her character and really you could change her into a Mutant and nothing would really change. Seriously everything with the Terrigen Bomb has already been done by the Mutants in infinitely better execution. And the whole discrimination angle with the Inhumans is NOT a good idea for a variety of reasons. One of which you stated in that Terrigenesis is *VOLUNTARY*, keep in mind that they were meant to replace Mutants, who were applicable allegories for things like minority groups and LGBT people and you see the problem, they could CHOOSE to be normal people who wouldn’t be discriminated against which can not be applied to minorities who are discriminated against because of what skin color they were born as. And with alternative sexualities due to how Terrigenesis works if you tied that into being an allegory for gay people for example it would bring the implications that you were turned gay by outside forces, which would be very offensive to gay people. And if you didn’t want to be turned into a fish man you could just be like Karnak, an Inhuman who NEVER underwent Terrigenesis and has proven to be capable without it. And keep in mind that Terrigenesis can result in cases of body horror and power incontinence which would actually be THEIR fault because unlike the Mutants they choose to do this. So overall they simply don’t work in the role of marginalized groups.

I hope the Inhumans are given a second chance, if done properly it could be soo good, trying to force them into a mutant-like role was just as detrimental for the Inhumans as it was for the X-Men

@@Vavalry Ok so I looked it up, Kevin Feige is in charge of the Marvel comics, movies and the television shows now and Perlmutter is still technically with the company but only with the business part and it appears is trying to be quietly retired completely
Really great video 🙂 There is potential in the Inhumans getting a reboot on multiple fronts. The Kamala Khan Ms. Marvel comic is still running, she's an Inhuman, so they could do a storyline about the Inhumans returning and then give em their own comic. Saladin Ahmed is the current writer of Magnificent Ms Marvel and he wrote the awesome Black Bolt series, so it'd be cool if he got to do that. Plus she's getting her own Disney+ show. Maybe they could reintroduce the Inhumans in the MCU through that and retcon that ABC show as an in-universe TV show.
if we get a good Fantastic Four i think there is where you could insert the inhumans. charcters like black panther and the the skrulls were introduced through other films but the inhumans can still have thier introduction though the FF
They could just do a Ms. Marvel movie somehow, that begs for a least a little Inhumans introduction and people are definitely gonna love her on the big screens.
Yeah I even forgot it was the same actor, I thought Black Bolt was just added by random. Fyi I never watched the show cause it's the only mcu project that *everyone agreed was trash, I even met ppl who liked Ironfist, but not one that liked Inhumans
I'm glad Drake didn't jump on the "Inhumans are only a substitute for X-Men" bandwagon. It is a common misperception on the internet, mostly by people who never read the Inhumans comics. Perlmutter my have thought they could be a substitute for the X-Men, but the souls of the groups have always been different. The Inhumans were a race and a society, mostly isolated from humanity. They would help humanity at times, but that was not their focus. The X-Men on the other hand were individuals, often discriminated against. At various times, their stories have been compared to racism and/or the gay experience. I enjoyed both sets of stories in the day, but I think I favored the Inhumans more. One point Drake should have added is now it is not the Inhumans trying to copy the X-Men, but the X-Men transitioning to the role the Inhumans played. Lately they wish to become an isolated race, often disinterested in humanity. I think it is a bad route to take, and Inhumans should have continued that role.
I don't think you fully explained the difference between mutants and inhumans here's the biggest difference inhumans abilities are tied to what is needed in the inhuman society it's not random or passed down from parent to child like mutants for example there's one inhuman who literally got turned in a door because his purpose in the inhuman city is to provide transportation for other inhumans that can be used to tell such interesting stories about destiny and choice and freewill it's what drew my attention to the Inhumans comics after watching the show agents of shield like how does one choose to do something after going through the terrigenesis process that literally defines who you are supposed to be for the greater society you're a part of its a cool concept that I hope the MCU reboots someday
I saw it, because, yeah, just eight episodes. Spot on analysis. And that Matt Fraction's quote at 5:23 summed it up perfectly. The X-Men are a metaphor for racial inequality. The Inhumans STARTED as a great metaphor for class inequality until Death of X when it turned into a clusterf*ck. Then comes the show... Which turned into the quote-unquote good guys needing to stop some powerless nobody from trying to dismantle the eugenics-based caste system and freeing slaves kept in the mines. But hey. The powerless nobody wants to be in charge of the freed slaves in the promised land, so he must be evil. That's literally the plot of the show and funny enough... every dystopian fantasy told from the antagonist's point of view. I get having a fleshed-out antagonist but when the villain's motivations are "let's topple a fascist monarchy and free the slaves from the mines on the moon!" you kinda lose the audience.
Inhumans were better showcased in Agents of Shield, because not only was it a better show, it was giving them time to build, and flushing them out more. The Inhumans show it self, which honestly not bad, definitely tried to be a more formulaic paint by numbers show, instead of sticking more to its comic book roots, and it went too fast.
Except for Ms Marvel. But luckily, most of her adventures have little to do with the other Inhumans anyway.... Oh and Lockjaw. We can never forget him.
My very first exposure to the inhumans was literally Death of X. I knew of their existence before then but the first time actually reading something with them in it was them murdering and then replacing the team who’s cartoons and movies got me into marvel comics, so I have a very sour history with them because of that.
They flopped because they were not popular and they didnt introduce the character thinking everyone knows them... And there were no stakes... Like why should i care about them...
Really good videos. I already know that Marvel wanted to distant themselve from the x-men and fantastic 4, but man they did that show just for that reason. It's like when they didn't had x-men character to Marvel vs Capcom Infinite, even if Wolwerine is a iconic character of the series.
Great video, especially since it talked about the comics for a decent amount. Another great example of you sticking to your guns about keeping this channel about the comics instead of the popular movies and other forms of media :)
I'm here for your history lesson. As someone who loves the concepts created in comics but can't seem to get into reading comics themselves I'm always interested in both the stories themselves as well as the behind the scenes business. It's all fascinating to me and I appreciate you doing all the leg work than simplifying it for people like myself.
Basically correct, but it's not a merge. As an entity Marvel Television was terminated. You can't merge nothing with something. All Marvel Television "property"/projects was/were given to Marvel Studios to manage.
As an animator I can tell you what was wrong with that shot: the lighting in the foreground and the background are off so it looks like you just slapped something over a picture of the sky and the colors of the city are dull compared to the sky which makes the city dull. Better lighting and more vivid colors could have helped this shot
I wasn't even aware that the Inhuman's was ever released. I knew that it was originally suppose to be a movie which got pushed back multiple times. And then they introduced the Inhuman's in Marvel's Agent's of S.H.I.E.L.D. but they mostly introduced original characters that weren't based on anything from the comics because they were still saving Black Bolt, Medusa, and the other main characters from the comics for a future Inhumans title. I had seen set photo's where Medusa had her head shaved and assumed that her hair would just be fully CGI. I never saw the photo of her in the wig and wasn't aware they had actually shaved her head as part of the plot... which is really dumb and makes ZERO sense by the way cause her powers would make that impossible to ever do. 1. The only way anyone could shave her head is if she was unconscious while they were doing it otherwise they'd never be able to get close enough to do it. Having Medusa just sit there while someone shaves her head without fighting back doesn't make any sense. Did she forget that she can use her hair as a weapon to fight them off? 2. Even if someone could manage to shave her head it wouldn't render her powerless. Her power allows her to manipulate her hair, she can be see growing it out or shrinking it down at will any time she wants so because of her powers she could pretty much instantly grow it back whenever she felt like it. Anyway... I never heard about the series ever actually being released. After the set photos I heard there were more production production during filming that also delayed the release of that series and then nothing for years until I found this video just now. It maybe wouldn't have flopped if anyone even actually knew it existed in the first place. I mean it sounds terrible just from the Medusa nonsense but maybe if it had a wider audience who actually saw the series it still could have found a fan base. They pretty much killed it because the series was never promoted and it spent years in production hell so a lot of people, even if they knew it was being produced, like myself, thought it had never been officially released. This is the first I ever heard about it's release in a video that just showed up in my recommendations despite being 2 years old.

JamCal-X Yeah was partially why the Inhumans could never replace Mutants as an allegory for minorities. The Inhumans were isolationists who created an entire slave race (Alpha Primitives) just to serve them.
Hopefully the ms marvel show will bring the inhumans back into the fold

But then Inhumans the show came and barely had any connection with it. I was so sure that they were gonna meet with Shield sometime soon, but never did.
BetaArtemis you are very right but I doubt it will happen
The cast (at least Black Bolt, Medusa and Maximus) were really excited about the idea of doing the Inhumans justice, but they got SO screwed. Shame really, all of them could have done great job (just read/listen some of the interviews around the time, Anson Mount created an entire language, and he did it himself, cause Marvel promised him a linguist and they cheaped out at the last second, so he -because he wanted the sign language to be original- had to do it himself)

_And they don't change._
The proper way to handle things (and indeed, the one the whole setup of the show seemed to be building towards) would be to have the heroes learning humility by being forced to work alongside humans while showing the villain increasingly lose sight of his original goal once he takes a liking to the power and sees it threatened.
It can be cut regularly but only if she allows it, which she then can use it remotely.
Medusa's head was shaved by Maximus at one point in the comics. In the late nineties (?) marvel knights run. I think they were trying to callback to that. The difference being of course, that that was well written and had emotional impact.

same here, though I also want to see the same actress as Crystal in addition to Medusa, Black Bolt & Maximus
AOS did an awesome Inhumans and Ghostrider Reyes
@@ryancarson6962 agreed. The protagonists were 100% the villains of the story.
I wonder how they would’ve done Vin Diesel since he already does Groot
@Deathmare235, he wouldn't talk? Black Bolt is a character who doesn't talk for obvious reasons unless he has to, and it's not uncommon for the same actor to play two different characters.
What a fascinating time period of Marvel trying to find a replacement for the X-Men by using the Inhuman’s that failed miserably. I think the reason why it failed is because people didn’t want something related to the X-Men, they WANTED the X-Men wholesale.
9:26 animator and VFX graduate here um yeah no your right that is very very not right
.1 the sky is clearly a dome with a sky image mapped to it
.2 when real footage and CGI elements are combined in a moving camera shot the live footages movements are replicated in 3D so they both are moving at the same pace here though wow it looks like they just guessed where the actors should be they don't match the moving environment at all infact it looks like the physical camera filming the actors was static when shooting but the 3d camera moves a lot more
.3 in all vfx projects Film or TV there is always colour grading and colour correction to make sure the colours match all elements here though nope not at all
You nailed it at 11:50 - it wasn't a great show, but it was NOT as terrible as everybody makes it out to be. That said, Perlmutter is trash and completely messed it up. Even an alien who has never seen humans before could tell Don Cheadle & Terrence Howard apart
I have to say, I loved most of Agents of SHEILD, and I think they handled the inhumans well enough.
Yeah your right i thought the inhumans shows was not even in the mcu and it is SHIELD
imagine AOS with Disney + money and actually made by Marvel Studios and kevin Feigi instead of Marvel Entertainment that was run by the hated Ik pearlmutter.
It’s a shame that some of these actors are actually good but are overshadowed by incompetence of directors and CEO’s luckily the blackbolt actor is in doctor strange
4:02 - 4:34
No mention of Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite? Okay...
In retrospect it's kind of surprising they didn't try to ram an Inhuman or two into that game, too.
Would've been extra funny too considering how important the X-Men are to that franchise.
And to a lesser extent LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2
I keep forgetting that's a thing, it was a bummer to not play as Wolverine in both Lego and MvC
Love your profile pic lol that's a deep cut
And the crap tastic marvel cartoon and the Axis Retcon who cut the tie between Magneto and his children.
The Illuminati from MoM was my hope for black bolt but they ducked him over again
A couple of thoughts on the Inhumans in general, keeping in mind that I really did enjoy the video:
I think the Terrigen bomb was a really neat idea.
And that dynamic is something I think the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. show handled pretty well (and obviously The Inhumans didn't)
sorry everyone for the kinda long comment, and also this is not in any way a direct criticism of Drake or the video, just a few thoughts in the defense of the Inhumans as a concept
I really enjoyed that run of Secret Warriors myself.
For some reason, my mind read “Eternals” instead of “Inhumans” and I thought I had teleported into a different timeline.
Maybe I’ve been living under a rock but this is the first I’ve heard of a inhumans show
Your definetly living under a rock🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
ehh... when the shows never seem to match the same magic as the movies, who needs to keep up to date?
Your living under a rock
Guess that tells you how much people cared about it
@@julianxamo7835 to be honest i've never cared about marvel live-action shows
The reason is the cool inhumans were on Agents Of SHIELD.
Maybe, but Quake wasn’t initially Inhuman. Thanks to AoS, her origin was retconned.
@@benwasserman8223 plus her entire look, originally she resembled Angelina Jolie in that Hackers movie with that short hair cut.
I honestly didnt think it was possible for a Mcu property to sink lower than Thor and the dark world but inhuman found a way .
I like thor the dark world it was not bad movie but not good as other marvel movies
I can really imagine a lot worse than thor the dark world. I find it okay
I mean what do you expect from a show written by a cheapass racist out of spite
**cough** Iron Man 2 **cough** Iron Man 3 **cough**
@@logan6034 Both of those movies are better than dark world if only for the sole fact that they're actually entertaining to watch and not a snore fest.
0:10-0:20 Captain Marvel: Am I a joke to you?
I gave up on this show after the first episode. This should've been a big budget movie, not a bargain bin TV show
I tried, I really did
But when I woke up it was halfway through the second episode
Inhumans as this intense dramatic game of thrones with superpowers thing sounds really cool, and a good way to set them apart from the x-men.
And Agents of Shield did so well with it, and there was just no correlation to it and the Inhumans movie
Any person with common sense woulda brought over the same team that created Agents of Shield for Inhumans b/c that show is literally one of the most underrated amazing shows.. Instead, Inhumans felt like a different world/universe and a lack of compelling characters with a touch of Ramsey Bolten.. Just Horribly written and executed
Meanwhile, when DC made a show for one of its lesser series, we got Doom Patrol, which was great.
And it was on a even more smaller effects budget.
Nah legion was better
Yeah but it's Not like Feige was involved in Inhumans. DC has a Loooooong way to go before they catch Marvel.
I hope the Inhumans are given a second chance, if done properly it could be soo good, trying to force them into a mutant-like role was just as detrimental for the Inhumans as it was for the X-Men
I completely forgot this show existed
And now Black Bolt is back..... and gone again lol
I remember watching it when it was coming out on abc and I didn’t think it was bad, but I can understand why it failed and why it wasn’t praised and easy to forget
This is a good reminder people that despite how much Disney likes to act like it’s woke, people like Pearl still have massive roles in the company despite thinking “all black people look the same”
Wait didn’t they fire him and put Feige in charge?
@@foxlover6770 I think he’s still working at Disney I could be wrong
@@Vavalry Ok so I looked it up, Kevin Feige is in charge of the Marvel comics, movies and the television shows now and Perlmutter is still technically with the company but only with the business part and it appears is trying to be quietly retired completely
Really great video 🙂
There is potential in the Inhumans getting a reboot on multiple fronts.
Spoilers for Ms. Marvel
She’s a Mutant!!!
if we get a good Fantastic Four i think there is where you could insert the inhumans. charcters like black panther and the the skrulls were introduced through other films but the inhumans can still have thier introduction though the FF
I humans failed as soon as they cut Medusa hair. How incredibly stupid
They could just do a Ms. Marvel movie somehow, that begs for a least a little Inhumans introduction and people are definitely gonna love her on the big screens.
She's actually getting a Disney+ show, so we'll have to see how that goes.
Ms. Marvel.. isn't that the muslim girl who would be stoned to death if she lived in a muslim country? oO
@@nigredoooalgown6245 well she wouldn’t be stoned to death cuz she has powers 💀
Congratulations Dr. Strange 2. You’ve reminded people that the Inhumans tv show was a thing.
Yeah I even forgot it was the same actor, I thought Black Bolt was just added by random. Fyi I never watched the show cause it's the only mcu project that *everyone agreed was trash, I even met ppl who liked Ironfist, but not one that liked Inhumans
Drake, you're the single best comic youtuber on this entire platform! I really love your channel.
I wouldn't say single best, but I really appreciate that you think so. :)
You don't know comics trope then.
2 years later and we get an Inhumans reference in the MCU.
Honestly, I had never considered that the X-Men are now going the route of the Inhumans. It's a really interesting observation!
2:50 Wait you have a picture of IKE ?? Midnight'S Edge don't have a picture of him
I don't think you fully explained the difference between mutants and inhumans here's the biggest difference inhumans abilities are tied to what is needed in the inhuman society it's not random or passed down from parent to child like mutants for example there's one inhuman who literally got turned in a door because his purpose in the inhuman city is to provide transportation for other inhumans that can be used to tell such interesting stories about destiny and choice and freewill it's what drew my attention to the Inhumans comics after watching the show agents of shield like how does one choose to do something after going through the terrigenesis process that literally defines who you are supposed to be for the greater society you're a part of its a cool concept that I hope the MCU reboots someday
0:05 this is true no matter how good you think the mcu is
Inhumans were better showcased in Agents of Shield, because not only was it a better show, it was giving them time to build, and flushing them out more. The Inhumans show it self, which honestly not bad, definitely tried to be a more formulaic paint by numbers show, instead of sticking more to its comic book roots, and it went too fast.
I forgot this show existed. Seems like just squandered potential like you said which is always a shame.
The show wasn't good, but it wasn't terrible. I watched the whole season while I have yet to watch the whole first season of Agents of SHIELD.
I’m glad we can all go back to forgetting the Inhumans again.
Inhumans are reclusive people anyway.
Except for Ms Marvel. But luckily, most of her adventures have little to do with the other Inhumans anyway.... Oh and Lockjaw. We can never forget him.
Do y'all even know why you don't like these characters or are you just triggered x men fans?
@@IllMatic97 No need to know the character for hating the pushing.
Question should be: how an Inhumans series that cut Medusa's hair at the beginning of the first episode could not be a shame?
My very first exposure to the inhumans was literally Death of X. I knew of their existence before then but the first time actually reading something with them in it was them murdering and then replacing the team who’s cartoons and movies got me into marvel comics, so I have a very sour history with them because of that.
Honestly Agents of Shield handled the Inhumans better than their own show.
I left a comment because you said it helped out btw you're hair looks nice
They flopped because they were not popular and they didnt introduce the character thinking everyone knows them...
And there were no stakes... Like why should i care about them...
Really good videos. I already know that Marvel wanted to distant themselve from the x-men and fantastic 4, but man they did that show just for that reason. It's like when they didn't had x-men character to Marvel vs Capcom Infinite, even if Wolwerine is a iconic character of the series.
I’m so glad that all this behind the scenes bullshit only served to make Agents of SHIELD better instead of torpedoing it like it so easily could have
Great video, especially since it talked about the comics for a decent amount.
Drake marvel television made the Inhumans show not marvel studios which at the time were 2 different entities that only recently merged
Basically correct, but it's not a merge. As an entity Marvel Television was terminated. You can't merge nothing with something. All Marvel Television "property"/projects was/were given to Marvel Studios to manage.
Who else is watching this in 2022. Black Bolt in now in the MCU proper and played by the same actor. Could this be the reboot?
I really wanted this show to be good... blame pearlmutter
I personaly blame Perlmutter for nearly every bad decision made by Marvel during the 2010's.
The one thing I'm learning about shitty Superhero media is that 8 times out of 10, it's because of behind the scenes bullshit.
As an animator I can tell you what was wrong with that shot: the lighting in the foreground and the background are off so it looks like you just slapped something over a picture of the sky and the colors of the city are dull compared to the sky which makes the city dull. Better lighting and more vivid colors could have helped this shot
Hmmm, oh yesss. (Beast's taunt of sounding intrigued in "#XMenNextDimension".
