Yes, Thursday nights at 9pm central time on NBC. Our family and friends were always at home to watch Dean Martin. It was a rule pretty much with everyone across America back in those times. I really miss Dean Martin! He was like family. The family you loved and wanted to be near anyway. LOL Stay safe and healthy Bill. :)
It would be difficult to come up with a performer with more charm and natural talent than Dean Martin, and she is incredibly lovely and talented.

Caterina was absolutely and utterly, immensely talented. She spoke numerous languages, sang, played guitar and she could dance! I recently discovered her and can not get enough of her. Thank you for another great analysis of her. Your respect and appreciation of these tremendously talented artists is simply wonderful.
She is still alive, bud.
She also acted in several German movies. Her German is very good, she used to be married to a German and acquired German citizenship. Now she lives in Switzerland.
Her voice is pitch perfect too. Amazing comic timing from both, love it!

And this perennially vivacious performer is still alive, recently celebrating her 90th birthday. Marvellous teaming up with the equally talented Dean Martin who made everything look so easy. Thanks for featuring these two wonderful artists and especially drawing attention to Caterina's effortless musicianship.
She was the most complete female musician, entertainer personality of the 20. Century. Highly respected. What i have heard she is ok, and enjoys her retirement with Friends and Family.
Dino and Caterina were good friends and really respected each other. It showed every time they performed together. It was also apparent how talented both were.

I know right! Fil , is the greatest storyteller ever. He’s so informative on hundreds of musicians,their genres ,but not only does he know what he’s talking about,he’s so genuine. You can’t fake that smile . Someone who’s a rocker , knows so much more about music my grandparents,and my parents grew up with,so I’m always learning something new. Top notch,as my papa would say . ❤️.

Anyone who was a decent human made him comfortable. He did a great deal for black artists, he and Frank Sinatra refused to play to segregated audiences, and they made great improvements for black artists in Las Vegas, and Dean made sure there was lots of representation on his show. No doubt he and Frank both remembered being bullied because of being Italian immigrants; it was really bad in the US.
Wonderful! Dean's shows were like no other. Always wonderful. And yes she can play! Thank you Fil for making me smile today!

One of my favourite UA-cam videos. I don't know how many times I've watched it these last few years, every time with a smile on my face, and I always laugh out loud when Caterina loses it at "You can bet your sweet cheeks!"
they had such wonderful chemistry! their charm is off the charts, as is their talent.

I remember Catarina on Dean’s show from my childhood (I’m now 67). She was a very talented guitarist, and Dean always flirted with all the ladies on his show. A more relaxed and different time than nowadays!

You know, back in my youth, childhood actually, she used to be quite popular here in Germany, too. And was frequent visitor in the TV-Shows. Therefore I had always had this image of her in mind, of being kinda light and mainstream. Only until recently I have realized what a worldwide and talented star she really was...
Caterina was a number One Star in Germany and worldwide. She was singer ( in many languages), dancer, artist, movie actor and Show maker. In a movie together with Bill Haley and and and .. don't forget her genious brother and multi instrumentalist Silvio Francesco.
Thank you very much! Caterina Valente is the perfect example for what is soo missed in many of todays "artists"! Not only could she do anything - singing, dancing, acting, playing instruments, but throughout her incredible career she remained very humble and very kind. I adore this woman and she will always be my biggest role model and idol! By the way - you look very cute!
Ah Fil, a legend.. I first heard Caterina sing (and play) a song Cha cha cha Flemenco....from that moment on I was a fan. She used to perform with her brother Silvio and they were both great guitarists.. thanks for sharing and analysing this most talented musician... stay well

When we lived in Houston , in 1965 , I remember my father going past a car dealership on Old Spanish Trail and whipping into the lot . he saw a motorhome parked on the side of the lot .
We'd never seen a motorhome that you could drive , so he had to check it out !
Long story short , Dean Martin and his manager had just sold the motorhome after Dean had wrapped up filming a Western in South Texas .
The movie company had given Dean the motorhome that he had lived in for part of the remote filming - during the day
We met and talked to Dean was waiting for his manager to come out with a check
He was very funny and said we need to buy his motorhome !
I met Dean again in Houston when he played the Shamrock Hotel Ballroom , where my sister and I opened up ( kind of a house duet ) for all of the acts that played there .
I talked to Dean in his dressing room before he went on , and he joked " y'all are a tough act to follow !"
I asked him if he remembered the motor home sale a few years back and said we were there , he didn't miss a beat and said " your papa shoulda bought that thing !
So , he actually remembered it !
Dean was a wonderful entertainer and very smart !

I like Dean very much. Everyone who duets with him is always so at ease. I've known he was a very likable person and people really liked to be with him.
A huge example of delightful duets are the medleys Dean and Sinatra used to do. Even who is musically illiterate - like me - can see how effortless they do their thing while clowning and having fun. It is sure a different level of entertaining when you have fun, laugh and their natural talent and charm (and chemistry) make it all so unique.
So delightful!!! Caterina is brilliant and such a pro. We had one of her records at home when I was growing up in the 60s. LOL Dino is an Italian man... flirting comes with the territory! I was being flirted with in Italy recently by guys in their 20s and 30s... and I'm 60 years young!

It's just kindness, and friendliness, plus a ton of charm. We (certainly in the northern countries) are not used to that in men.
Saw Catharine Valente with the Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of Thad Jones in 1986. The best was the to hear her singing while Freddie Green laid out a carpet of rhythm under her smooth voice.
It is IMPOSSIBLE to not smile while watching Dino have fun. I love your Dean Martin analyses.

Current entertainers need to take a step back and drink up the talent and abilities oozing from these vintage stars. No electronics, sampling, pitch manipulation. Actual musicians and singers having the times of their lives while executing near-perfect performances. It just doesn't get any better.

Dean is my all time favorite entertainer, he could have been bigger than Sinatra but he was happy with what he had. Incredible voice, decent actor and was incredibly funny comfortable in his own skin, there aren't any like him anymore... Very sad.

@@barbaradownie3265 I'd like to think that, I wish it were true, I think Dean had the better voice, it certainly aged better but in reality maybe only Elvis was bigger than Sinatra.. and I think that's how Dean wanted it. Frank was filling concert arenas, Dean wasn't, it wasn't his thing. Frank had a fairly vibrant recording career most of his life, and controlled every aspect of the sessions to include music. Dean went in sang what they told him and got to the golf course.

love both of them. Have albums from both. I was named after her, have a lot of issues getting people to spell my name right. She was a great singer in multiple languages. Pretty much the only thing my German mother and hispanic father could agree on.

Valuable analysis of an iconic entertainment moment. Maybe worth mentioning also that among Caterina's many talents on display here is conducting. She is not just in control of Dean, in control of her playing, in control of her singing - at the end she is in control of the orchestra. It is she who conducts the grand finale, bringing the orchestra in and bringing them off (presumably through the intermediary of the MD) with perfect clarity . . .

That was fun to watch, thank you Fil! :-) I remember Caterina Valente being on German TV aaall the time during my childhood, during the 70's through to the early 80's, and I'd always gotten a somewhat arrogant vibe off her, like she was being a bit of a show-off with her multi-language knowledge. But anyway, I must say I am indeed surprised to learn she used to actually play the guitar and very well, too! Makes me see her in a slightly different light, and she comes across here as really quite charming, too :-) This song also reminds me of some of the stuff Carol Kaye was demonstrating in her documentary. And one more thing I'd like to add, Valente used to also perform together with her brother Silvio Francesco a lot :-)
Caterina always was a very humble, kind and completely down to earth gal! Germans just couldn't cope with her worldwide success as they claimed her to be exclusively "theirs" and were not at all familiar with her many talents and her broad spectrum. Although you don't hear from her much nowadays you'd be surprised for how many artists she still is the ultimate role model as it really doesn't get any better than her!

Great idea. I love Dino's voice, rounder and smoother than Sinatra's. I always thought Dean Martin had the better voice but never got the quality material that Sinatra was given.

Funny thing is that Dean almost never/barely rehearsed. It gave the show a looseness that was fun and unpredictable. Dude was the king of cool.
