    aren't they amazing?! I had never heard a single song from them and was taken to a concert from them a couple of months ago. it was pretty overwhelming how good their music is, even at first listen. =)

    I'm a huge Nels Cline fan and love his solo but I still have to applaud Jay Bennett's original solo on the studio take

    Actually, the noise is supposed to be the Chicago el.

    @bobjones864 100% agree with this. I was totally unprepared for the "jumbo jet" portion when I first saw them for the first time in 2007 and it just blew me away. There's no way to convey how LOUD and overwhelming an experience it is in a video

    @Noseheros Check the Summerteeth liner notes: Jeff Tweedy played all of the guitar parts on this song in the studio. Jay Bennett played the banjo, piano, organ, Moog, and tambourine on Via Chicago.

    Having seem Wilco live, I can report that videos of this never quite do it justice. When they do that "chaos" bashing around part, in the room it sounds like a jet taking off. Nels Cline's Amp vibrates the whole building when he does that with it.
    This is a great clip though.

    this was such a great take of this song but WHY DID IT HAVE TO CUT OFF AT THE END

    Amen to all your comments, isnackv20. In contrast to some posters in this thread, the "cacophony" does not 'ruin' the vibe of this song in any way. Just the opposite, the quiet, reflective parts of 'Via Chicago' are actually more dramatic when framed by the contrasting loud, "free" sections. I'll admit that the approach is not for everyone's taste, but there's no denying the artistry and vision in assembling these contrasting colors.

      It gets your attention and holds it...most music doesn't come close to that.

    A. This is an awesome song and clearly one of their finest.
    B. Using discordant sounds is a musical feature that they use on many other songs ie Sunken Treasure, I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, Ashes of American Flags and others. It what makes them an experimental rock band, among other denominations.

    That's a good point, but what I said was the rest of the show I went to this month was chill and for them to play an acoustic song with "chaos" in the middle of it, totally ruined my vibe. I stand by my initial statement that the middle chaotic parts don't completely lend themselves to the rest of the song, regardless of the symbolism (which isn't lost on me, btw).

  • @calvinmontgomery
    @calvinmontgomery 14 років тому

    why is there random drums and keyboards halfway through that don't suit the song? I saw Wilco last week and this song ruined the vibe I was in. It's abrasive and I don't care if you give me thumbs down, but Impossible Germany, Poor Places and Reservations are miles ahead of this.

      It's a sonic representation of the El in Chicago. If you've ever hung out in a second-floor flat that is only a few feet away from the elevated tracks, or if you've been to backyard barbecue at a friend's house in Chicago through which the el tracks run, then you'd get it. The screeching, clattering train stops all conversation for a few seconds about every ten minutes--it's part of life in Chicago. This song is an all-time great love letter to Chicago.

    um, sorry but i've been listening to Wilco for at least 8 years, so clearly this is just a bad song. it makes no sense to have drums and keys that don't even add to the song.
