100%. You can celebrate the game and not minimize the sexual assault culture. Hockey Canada is another prime example. A literal assault fund and people still think we’re asking too much of coaches and team management. What’s it going to take?
I know Shaw is taking a lot of shit for what he said about the Kyle beach situation so I wanted to share my thoughts. I think his thoughts on that Quenville should be allowed back in the league is actually absurd, for a couple reasons. Firstly we know he knew about it, we know he wanted to wait until the playoffs were over for it to be dealt with, we know he wrote a recommendation for the abuser that resulted in him getting a job at a high school resulting in the rape of a minor, we know that he then lied about any knowledge of this when the story first broke. The fact that he thinks Quenville should be allowed back in the league is batshit insane. Now the point that some people will disagree with. I see a lot of people saying that he’s victim blaming or victim shaming by saying that Kyle put himself in a bad situation. Two things can be true at the same time. Kyle is in no way responsible for what happened, & the person who assaulted him is 100% to blame & should be castrated as far as I’m concerned. However, saying that someone put themselves in a bad situation isn’t putting blame onto them, it’s putting onus onto a person that they need to be able to better recognize the potential dangers of the environment that surrounds them & the people within it. It’s something everyone should do. Nobody is to blame for bad things like this happening to them but we all need to do our best to be careful & make smart decisions to avoid putting ourselves in situations where bad things can happen. That’s what I think Shaw was trying to say, & it’s really bugging me that so many people immediately jump to the worst case scenario with everything people say. There’s still such thing as nuance & context.
I agree with most of what you're saying, but unfortunately it is still victim. Blaming to say that Kyle Bush had anything to do with his own rape. Or that any of his decisions played a factor in his getting raped ......How many of us guys have gotten drunk and passed out at another person's place? Or have entered into a situation where we in no way shape or form Even thought rape was an option? And what Shaw did was a classic example of victim shaming as if it was Kyle Busch's job to be hyper vigilant about making sure he wasn't raped.... We do the same thing to women in society.... If she hadn't gotten drunk, if she hadn't been dressed Provocatively if she hadn't been nice to him, if she hadn't been alone..... And people like Shaw unfortunately never consider that saying stuff like this actually encourages the next person to not speak up if it happens to them because they will be judged for their bad decisions by their friends and co-workers..... And I think we both agree in my book. Kyle Busch is a hero and these guys are bozos
You're completely dismissing the power dynamic at play here. It's 100% victim blaming. You don't tell someone who was a victim of sexual assault "hey well you shouldn't have been in that situation". The fuck?
You seem to be stating that the guy using his power over other guy to get what he wants could somehow be... avoided by the victim he targeted? How, exactly? Like you said - nuance and context. It would be helpful if you provided those two things, because otherwise it does sound like you're blaming the victim.
@@radioblimp4686 I haven’t dismissed anything, I recognize the power dynamic & stated that there was nothing Kyle beach did that he could of or should of done in that situation. We have gut instincts for a reason & being able to recognize the signs of potential danger can only be an asset to someone. You can hold people accountable for their actions as you should & also educate people on what to look out for & stay safe. It’s not victim blaming, grow up.

It would be interesting to hear you talk about Bobby Hull's one game boycott to protests "goons" in hockey. Bobby Hull in his prime was built like a brick shithouse (incidentally he constantly harassed Brett, calling him lazy and that he ate too much ... he did it in public too like he was trying to publicly shame him into behaving differently) but as I am sure you know just being big and strong may help but it ultimately does not mean you will be a good fighter. Frankly I do not think Bobby ever got over the fight he had with John Ferguson. Hull was way stronger and in better shape than Ferguson, but Ferguson was a veteran of a thousand fights and on ice wars. When Bobby dropped the gloves to fight Ferguson Fergy looked stunned at first as if "Bobby, you are not a fighter, what are you doing?" But then he just said "fuck it, you want to go let's go." And Fergy beat the hell out of Hull, and after that Hull became increasingly annoyed with goons and intimidation in general, arguing "when Bobby Hull comes to town the seats are full and the TV ratings are high, when Ferguson comes to town nobody cares, so there should be some respect for stars at a systemic level, not just goon vs goon on ice policing, but actual efforts to make hockey the focus not fighting." I would also like to hear you talk more about brawls and why they are so much scarier even for tough guys like you. For instance, I am not sure if you know about it, but the famous brawl in Calgary in the WHA in 1976 that went on for half an hour stands out, and featured star player Marc Tardiff being beaten and punched while he was unconscious by Rick Jodzio, and which required 20 police to break up and led to numerous charges.

While I understand the backlash of criticism over Shaw’s lack of sympathy for his former teammate, I also feel that a valid, useful, message is being lost these days: 1. It is your responsibility not to put yourself in this kind of situation 2. It is your responsibility to defend yourself Maybe you fail to do it, you don’t deserve to be blamed for it. But it’s not true that you have no agency over what happens to you, and I think sending that message all the time is wrong. Moreover, I share his opinion that Coach Q, as they call him, has been disproportionately blamed in this. Yeah, we won’t cry over a millionnaire and he most probably has a part of responsibility for being passive, but arguing he deserves to have his career ended is just completely over the top.
Ya so what happens if Kyle beats the tar out of him he gets charged for assault and their is a level of blackmail here ! His career everything obviously he didn’t have any recourse on this and he was right no one backed him !this is no different than a workplace incident Kyle beach never played after this meanwhile coach q can still make millions!
Anyway, I agree that they should have called the police when he told them about it instead of burying it. Beach himself should've called the police, as a matter of fact. I guess he can be excused for not reacting optimally, given the circumstances.
when i first read what happened to Kyle first thing that came to my mind was what i would do in that situation and i came to the conclusion that i wouldnt even have been in that situation. Shaw is right and any normal guy would do that but the problem with shit like this is the creeps know how to groom there victims so they wouldnt pick on a guy like Shaw or like me cus he wouldnt be able to groom us and even if he did we'd fight back
Nilan has fought so many fights on ice and off the ice that he deserves respect, but since this is the internet he doesn't get any here. His opinion is just his, not yours and i think the haters can hate all they want, this will change nothing. Theses guys fough on the ice for their fans and ya'll probably weren't one of them anyway. Do not worry Chris, people like you because of who you are, not what you say.
WOW! So refreshing to hear someone actually speak their minds and opinions for a change. Well done Andrew and well done Knuckles and Tim for letting Andrew speak his truth.
So whenever anyone disagrees with you, they’re “pushing an agenda”, but when they agree they’re “speaking their minds”? Interesting how that allows you to never challenge your beliefs and instead stay in your bubble.
What are you talking about? Did I write anything about " pushing an agenda''? It's nice to see someone willing to express an opinion unlike most current or former players that simply parrot the Bettman agenda. I don't have to agree with everything Shaw said and I don't, it's just nice to see someone express their own take on issues that they lived through.
@@kartofle123 There are plenty of people "speaking their minds", and guys like Shaw and Nilan are actively trying to silence them. Weird that you don't stick up for those guys against the right wing hockey establishment.

Interesting that you're less angry at the people mocking a rape victim than the rape victim. Maybe you should think about what you're saying before you say it.
Yves, the contents of your channel give me the impression that you have children, and I sincerely hope to God that none of them ever have to experience the pain that Kyle Beach endured during his time with the Blackhawks. I hope for this because a) no one deserves to be sexually assaulted, and b) because you are a heartless shit, who I cannot imagine being of much use to a survivor of sexual assault. Seriously. Imagine it was your loved one: a son, a daughter, a nephew, a cousin, a sister, a brother. Hell, even imagine it was YOU in Kyle Beach's shoes. You just turned twenty a couple months ago, and after months of playing for their AHL affiliate, you've been called up by the Hawks. All you've ever wanted to do is play in the NHL, the best hockey league in the world. You've been training for this your whole life, and it seems like you're finally getting your big break. Then, one day, you are approached by a staff member of the team and he tells you he has the power to get you onto the Blackhawks' roster. He invites you over to his apartment, provides you with dinner and some drinks, and then he sexually assaults you. While this man is violating your body, he tells you that you must pretend that you are enjoying it or he will make sure that you never play in the NHL again. You are TWENTY YEARS OLD. Two years out of high school, not even old enough to drink in some countries, and a man with a considerable amount of influence over your career is threatening to ruin your life if you do not comply with his orders. Hockey is all you know - you've never planned for anything else. You were drafted straight out of high school and you don't have any back up plans. Hockey IS your future. And this man is telling you that you must do whatever he says because if not, he will take hockey away from you. Eventually, you flee from this man who has just assaulted you, and are ashamed of yourself. You blame yourself for what happened, and this guilt eats away at you for years and years. You feel broken, like a shell of the person you used to be. In 2021, you come forward about what happened. You don't want anyone else to go through what you went through, and you want the people responsible for your suffering to be held accountable. Then, two years later, this guy shows up on a podcast and basically blames you for having been assaulted. You KNOW THIS PERSON, you paid for his groceries and his rent at some point, and he is saying that it is your fucking fault that you were taken advantage of during an incredibly vulnerable period in your life. Now, Yves, I'm begging you to TRY. TRY to imagine yourself in this situation. Looking at it from this perspective, does Andrew Shaw not seem like a total jackass? Are you seriously so devoid of compassion, that you cannot understand why anyone would be seriously upset about his comments? People are not throwing "virtue fits". This isn't some argument about political correctness or virtue signaling. This is about being a decent human being, and understanding that no one is ever to blame for being sexually assaulted. If you can't understand that, and you think that every person condemning Shaw is doing so to flaunt their moral goodness or to stroke their own ego, I feel sorry for you. So yeah. I hope no one you love is every sexually assaulted, because they deserve to have someone in their life who will support them in the aftermath, not someone who will politicize their trauma. Not sure if you'll read this because it's a lot of text, but if you do, please please please try to be more empathetic. Don't assume that people who are empathizing with survivors of abuse are doing that to earn any kind of validation. They're doing it because sexual assault fucking sucks, and it sucks to blame anyone but the perpetrator for the assault.
For obvious reasons…💀 Shaw would never say this in front of a parent who’s child is victim of a sexual assault. Idk if Shaw has kids but holy shit man imagine if it was one of your kids or family member.
Refreshingly honest take. Sadly, it has taken less than 24 hours for the sensitive types to start the pile-on in the comment section. I guess crying in the BH's section of The Athletic isn't enough. I bet we won't get to Saturday before Nilan and Shaw are forced by the Rainbow Mafia to issue groveling apologies. I bet Pinhead makes it the lead item on the next HNIC intermission segment, in fact.

2. It is your responsibility to defend yourself
Maybe you fail to do it, you don’t deserve to be blamed for it.
I applaud you for that reasonable, level-headed comment. So many people these days want to burn witches at the stake.
All he wanted to do was talk to the coach about something so you’re saying players shouldn’t be able to go to there coach’s
I don't understand what you mean.
Victim blaming by Shaw. Not a good look.
when i first read what happened to Kyle first thing that came to my mind was what i would do in that situation and i came to the conclusion that i wouldnt even have been in that situation. Shaw is right and any normal guy would do that but the problem with shit like this is the creeps know how to groom there victims so they wouldnt pick on a guy like Shaw or like me cus he wouldnt be able to groom us and even if he did we'd fight back
I hope, for the sake of all kids, that you're not and will never be a parent.

@@antiantiderivative Maybe you haven't heard of freedom of speech and in my experience it's usually the progressives that are the most intolerant and the most willing to curb people's freedom of speech. Too funny.
Go back to VOX, sister.
Great interview as always. Obviously people will be having virtue fits over the Kyle Beach comments.

You are a sad, angry little man. You have my pity. Farewell.
