Hint: now use the rhythm in this video together with the chords in this other video: ua-cam.com/video/qC_g27Za0zo/v-deo.html and BOOM! Instant cinematic soundtrack!

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I've been trying to put my finger on this for a long time! I've noticed that the orchestral scores of blockbuster movies all sound the same, but I couldn't quite figure out why. Now that I've watched this and gone back to listen to the examples you mentioned, this is EXACTLY what I was hearing!

It's an interesting question whether 7/8 is 3/4 plus half a beat, or 4/minus half a beat.
It's a well-known Greek traditional rhythm, sometimes described as "limping".
My guess for the next fashionable unusual metre is 10/8, divided as 2 + 3 + 3 + 2 which is another traditional Greek rhythm.

In this case, I'd go for 4/4 minus a beat. It makes the tempo sound faster, because in 4/4 time, the next strong beat is earlier than you expect.

I first saw this in Terminator. It’s great! It gets your pulse racing.

Thanks! I feel your pain about copyright strikes
What you could do is provide a list of cued-up UA-cam examples within your description of the video - that shouldn't cause strikes or threats or demonetization.

Great videos! Quick question, is the Complete Chord Mastery course a series of videos that when signed up you can access all the videos right away or are they released each month? I tried to find an answer on your site and couldn't seem to find it.
    Thanks again and great content!

Check out Spartacus by Jan van der Roost. Another Super hero in irregular measures in 5/8, 7/8, and others.

    7/8 is one of my favorite meters - although I prefer 3 2 2 ;)

This is a romanian folk rhythm called giampara !!!

It’s common in Greek Romani music also. I don’t know the word for it though.

This is quite old and has been extensively used by Rush (eg. Tom Sawyer, Natural Science, etc.) and in many Yanni tunes . Still epic sounding though.

Didn't say it was new (it's at least as old as The Rite Of Spring) ;-)

Are you mixing up sound track with score track? There's a huge difference between these two.

2+2+3 has kinda been trendy for a long time not just in film scores. Because its an easy way to make 7 feel groovy

All rhythms are trendy before they get specialized.

Yeah, 3+2+2 and other asymmetric meters go back for a while. They’re all over the Nolan Batman films from 2005-2012

    • @MusicTheoryForGuitar

Yes! I'm sure we can go back quite a while and find that somehow this rhythm is still associated with heroism one way or the other.

I believe in the song Circles by Incubus there is this same rhythm. It of course feels really weird but really cool - it might not be 7 over 8. This needs to be fact checked.

And I just remembered: The way they break up the 7 is 2+2+3, just like the "superhero rhythm". (I think the 5 is 2+3.)

Well. There are platforms like Rumble and Odysee. So to hell with yt and its copyright algorithms.
PS. Latest movie music is crap. Lirerally. They are making it so loud and exactly the same. Take for example Bram Stoker's Dracula soundtrack made by Wojciech Kilar. There is a content to it. Conan the Barbarian from 1982? Same thing. There is a content. A story that is being told. Contemporary music? Rubbish. Not interested in it, just like I'm not interested in "super heroes in spandex" movies. I'm to old to watch a lad pretending to be Spider or a Bat and he saves the day. Plus the amount of CGI (big and flashy on top of taht) is just beyond stupidity. Practical effects are my thing.

    • @MusicTheoryForGuitar
      @MusicTheoryForGuitar  6 місяців тому

"Conan the Barbarian from 1982". Yes, that's composed by Basil Poledouris, one of my favorite soundtrack composers. That's a high bar to measure up to. But I agree with you in general. I find that in later years, the best soundtrack works are done for video games rather than movies.
