  • This is a re-edited version of a video previously up-loaded to UA-cam.
A footplate ride was a highlight of a visit to the Pass. For a small sum of money, loco crews were usually happy to take enthusiasts the full length of the pass with them. This video covers a selection of shots taken on a ride on the front loco of a pair of QJs from Jing Peng in the west over the summit to Galadesitai in the east. Although most of the QJ class had mechanical stokers fitted, the locos were usually fired by hand because the crew were given a bonus for fuel efficiency and this was best achieved by hand firing.

These loco's seem to steam superbly on that coal dust !

Good point. I have been told the locos burn the dust like a bunker-oil burning loco burns oil injected into the firebox - immediate combustion. I have no idea if this is true.

He was cleaning up the footplate and topping up the fire. QJs had mechanical stokers.

Sorry to disillusion you but steam stopped on the Ji Tong railway in 2005. It lingered on in a few isolated industrial locations until just one in the far west of China (Sandaoling open-cast mine) was still working with a few steam locos into the beginning of 2020. They may still be working but no recent visits, so nobody knows.

      *NOPE.*
*Steam have been off the mainline for well over a dozen years in China long replaced by diesels.......... the only steamers MAYBE left are possibly one or two in some industrial rail setting.*
*Even then, diesels are being pushed to the periphery tracks as China Railways has the largest electrified rail network in the world.*
*You're FAR more likely to see a pure electric locomotive pulling a goods or passenger train in China than a diesel-electric locomotive.*
