My son is serving in Alaska and his dad and I have told him many times that he is successful when he is obedient of does his best to fulfill his calling, which our elder does. Baptisms have been very, very few, but he is becoming more solid in his testimony and knowledge of doctrine (many other things - teaching to the person, compromising with companions, etc.). But we worry about his mental health due to the long, dark days in the winter. He's made it through one, but we will welcome him back with open arms if gets too tough for his mental health. And elder from my branch just returned after 6 months to the concern of his parents, but absolutely everyone has been happily accepting of him. He did his personal best! Thank you for being interviewed, Drew! I'm so glad that we are all learning more about the subject of mental health. We all suffer to some degree.

I’m in northern Germany, bordering yo Scandinavia. Winters are loooong and dark. I’ve seen missionaries suffering from it which is no surprise since even the locals do. It’s good that you’re so aware of the role that outside factors such as lack of daylight can play.

Whilst I didn't serve a mission, I can relate to this. It mirrors my university experience in a lot of ways. I have bipolar disorder and anorexia and it caused me great pain during my uni years. I had to take a year off because it got that bad and I felt such shame and guilt over it. With the right help, I was able to go back and complete it with a good grade. I kept getting back up and I did it and I couldn't be prouder of myself. Great video!

That was a really good episode. It literally brought tears to my eyes. I am very grateful to you for speaking out so directly about mental illness. Drew, you are a blessing to the community.

I never went on a mission. I dropped out of school when I was 16 and got a job in the oilfield. I left home because my parents were crazy. My mission was to become street smart first then work on my testimony later. I got married at 19, then 3 years later got married in the temple.
Sometimes parents want one thing for their children, but children have to learn and decide for themselves. If you love someone set them free.

Too many mentally missionaries are being sent on missions--many end up coming home early. Also, a relatively new phenomenon is that mentally sound missionaries get blamed for the mental illness of companions.

To Mormons believe that unmarried women still get the same grace and get to go to heaven?

Hi! :) We don’t believe that anyone will be held accountable for anything that’s outside their control, so if someone wanted to get married in this life, but didn’t have the chance, they’ll have the opportunity to receive all the same blessings as everyone else (go to the Celestial Kingdom, get married, etc). Same goes for anyone who died without the gospel but who would have received it if they’d had the chance.
