      @@AngiAholic Dolly sounds remorseful? As in ashamed? That's how it seems you are implying it... No. She sounds bittersweet; parting with someone cause it's needed for both. Whitney just sounds as though she has lungs for days; she doesn't really bring a connection to it. Not how Dolly just did. This is my first time hearing Dolly's version of it, and it has now become a song I'll actually think more of, instead of just another song on the radio.

    • @Caprizonica
      @Caprizonica 5 років тому +8

      Whitney's versión is based on Linda Ronstadt's who recorded the song in 74. Elvis Presley wanted the song but also wanted the rights of it. Dolly refused. She gave the song to Linda because she liked her singing and were friends. Whitney's mom used to be Linda's backup singer.

    • @BabyVapor
      @BabyVapor 5 років тому +8

      In all reality the whole reason that this song was written was it was the way she quit her job at the Porter Wagoner show. She actually wrote that song to sing on the last episode she ever appeared on his television show and it was her goodbye to him. I never even knew Linda Ronstadt sang it but yes she did do a good version but the whole reason the song was written was just so Dolly could quit that show and leave him with a memory of the song that she wrote just for him. She actually said in an interview one time that it first it upset her that she was never given the credit for it but then she decided that every time somebody played the Whitney Houston version of it she got royalties. The only reason that she did not allow Elvis to have this song was because Elvis wanted to also have a writing credit for it when he never had a thing to do with the song.

    I watched the Porter Wagoner Show regularly with my Dad back in the 60's as a boy. I remember when Dolly was first introduced on the show. It was one of my Dad's favorite shows, and she was one of his favorite singers. My youngest sister was riding through Tennessee many years ago with a friend (in the 1980's, I think), and found the home of Dolly Parton's parents. Just a very simple, modest home in the country. They actually went up to it and, if memory is correct, her parents and sister were sitting on the big front porch. Unfortunately, Dolly wasn't there. They introduced themselves, and my sister said the Partons were so down-to-earth friendly, it was like they'd always known each other. They spent a couple of hours talking with them, and my sister actually went bicycle riding with Dolly's sister. My sister passed away September 2016, but that visit was a day she never forgot!

    Dolly is one of the most authentic people ever, especially in the world of music which is so cutthroat. When Dolly heard Whitney sing this song, she said she nearly fell off her stiletto's. She has always encouraged artists and has humbly allowed others to sing her songs as she said they are gifts from God and should be shared. She is a true gem.
    And Billy, you aren't wrong about singers sounding good only on the record/studio/radio because they are autotuned. Most country singers have natural pure voices with almost perfect pitch and very rarely sing out of key even for a few notes. That may be why so many other genre's need loud instruments and vocal gymnastics to sound good live. JMHO

    One of the things that I love about old school country is that it tells a story. But I never knew that Dolly wrote this song for Porter Wagner. WOW!!!

    The truth behind the song is bittersweet for all those who love Dolly and Porter she loved him as a friend and he loved her as the beautiful lady she was it was guaranteed to end in a tragedy but that's life it's seldom what we want it's usually just what we need!

    I never knew the story behind the lyrics, nice to know. She always has great stories behind her songs. I remember hearing the story behind coat of many colors, I was like dang, where is my tissue box?? :,( BTW, you're awesome for all of the reactions. Love your channel! ♥

    I love watching peoples reaction when they find out that Dolly Parton
    wrote and sang, 'I will always love you,' in 1974. Whitney Huston was 11 when this song came out. Whitney just did a
    cover of the song in the 90's for the movie Body Guard.

    late to the reaction but wanted to add. not only did she buy the catalog and gift it back to him but visited him in his nursing home and sang it to him as he died then paid his bill. an incredible person on stage and off. her voice is amazing and more so by her heartfelt style

    Lots of Dolly's songs are also sung as stories. She also does character voices. Check out her album Hailos and Horns.

    When she heard the Whitney Houston version in The Bodyguard she had the same reaction as Carl Perkins when Elvis recorded "Blue Suede Shoes". Carl Perkins wrote the song and first recorded it and even sounds like Elvis. Someone asked him what he thought when he heard Elvis's version of his song. He said, "I knew I would never sing it again, and I cried all the way to the Bank. The song writer get 50% of the money made on ever record!

    the 1974 version 1st performance in public was by Dolly on the Porter Wagoner TV show. And she has a little chat with Wagoner that is classic after her song, if you know the back story, it is a crack-up.

    The funny thing is people would ask her if she had a problem with the fact that most people think that it love Whitney version of the song. She said no because she made a lot of money off of Whitney version and would love at the time if she want to sing another one of her songs.

      Well said.😉I also saw an interview where she was asked what she thought of Whitney's version,and Dolly was extremely pleased with it.She was "honored to have such an amazingly talented young gal sing this so beautifully."Two different styles,by two phenomenally talented women.☺️

    I heard of Dolly singing a duet with one of the other voices in country music, Charley Pride. They sang "Amazing Grace". I don't know if there was a recording of this, but it is something I wish I heard.

    Dolly Parton wrote this song for Porter Waggoner. She sang it to him and asked him to release her from her contract, which he did. Years later she was a super star and he had lost or sold rights to his music she bought them and gave them back to him.

    The difference between the versions is that you can tell Dolly meant this when she sang it. It always makes me cry when I hear Dolly's version because you can tell she really loved Porter Wagoner but that she needed to break out on her own to be what she is today.
