    Here is another problem that can and will raise. If your fuel tank is not vented, it will act like a pressured tank, pushing fuel past the pump all the way into the heater. Which will flood the burner unit. If you're up in high elevation, start your heater to the lowest setting, or pump to 1.0 Hz to 1.2 Hz. You should be fine to start, then bump up to your temp once started. Here is another thing people forget to do. Once you run your heater at high temp, help clean to burn off extra carbon, you need to set the temp back down and run it until the excess fuel has burned away from the cleaning burn at high heat. If your tank isn't vented, it can cause a " vapor lock," too. Fuel will not be pumped through because it's equalized the tank. People have thought it was their pumps or glow plugs. Most of the time, it's as simple as venting the tank. If you pull the cap off and look at the clear pieces under, you can pull them out and look to see if the little nipple is in; if so, pull it out, and you will be set. The worst case is to buy a venting set for fuel cans, which is super easy to install. The next big thing is to make sure you have at least 6 inches for the air intake where the fan is. I can't stress this enough! If not, your unit will run hot and burn out your heat sensor sooner than later, then throw a code.

    Good tips for the install. I have next week off work and hope to use some of the time to finish my install in the back of my truck camper. My plan is to have the tank and pump mounted outside to save space and reduce noise and interior contamination in event of a leak. Just need to make a somewhat insulated housing and I’ll probably use the diesel fuel conditioner in the coldest weather to help avoid gelling of the fuel. I know modern diesel has that in it already but I figure it won’t hurt to add some, anyway. I’ll have the fuel coming out of the bottom of the tank and then flowing up to the heater so that part should be good. 👍🏻

      Sounds like a good setup to me! Really wish I would have installed the diesel heater sooner. Total game changer!
      Probably a good call on the fuel conditioner just in case. Nothing like having the heat fail on the coldest of nights.

    Thank you for making this video! I'm ordering the shut off valve now. I was thinking something was wrong with my heater. It would run on first startup if it sat for awhile but I could never shut it off and turn it back on while it was still warm. I'm positive the fuel was flowing in the chamber after it shut off and flooding it. My fuel tank is on the back door of my van and about 6 inches higher than my heater. Should fix the problem, thanks again.

    My heater is blowing diesel smell and is leaking through the air intake chambers

  • @tsgulen01

    I had exactly the same issue, dripping from the exhaust until the whole tank becomes empty. I sent the heater and the pump to the service then I found this video. Thanks for the tip. I will add a selonoid valve to switch it on / off easily. But I want to ask one thing: Which is the correct place to add the shut off valve? Between the tank and the pump or between the pump and the heater?

    • @VanwithTim
      @VanwithTim  3 місяці тому +2

      Either location will work assuming the rest of the system is sealed against air intrusion. Closing off the line at any point will prevent siphoning of the fuel so install it in a convenient place and call it a day! Just remember the solenoid will draw continuous power while operating - not an issue with a large enough battery bank, but some builds run very small capacity electrical systems.

    Put tubing in warm water it goes flexible and slides on easily

      That's what I was hoping for but it still didn't budge. Even used a heat gun which started melting the rubber (poor execution on my part) and it still had an issue. Was probably the embedded threading reinforcement.
      Still a worthwhile trick to at least try though!!

    Hey Tim what are your thoughts on the Propex propane heater that Im going to install in my van ? Thanks for your video’s

    • @VanwithTim
      @VanwithTim  2 роки тому

      If you're already planning on having propane on board the Propex is a great choice! The only con with propane is finding fuel (which isn't too big of a concern if the tank is large enough!)
      I'd say it's a much better option than the diesel heater if you have the budget. No need to constantly change your tuning for different elevations and no worrying about soot build up.
      Obviously with ANY combustion heater it's a no brainer to toss in a carbon monoxide detector or two. Silly to risk your life while asleep over $25!

    Hi.. I have a unit like yours in my car.. it runs great on startup . Seems to drip kero from the parting line in the case. It may or may not drip / 1@5 sec. I'm asking if you have ever hear of this .. it started this season. Same install and worked great the 1st mo. Now it comes and goes. I shut it off and start the car to turn it on .. pump is at the corr angle and fuel pipe is feeding into the bottom of the case. It's on its side but it worked good for 2yrs. Sometimes it doesn't leak at all. Plzz tex me with your thoughts .. ty..

    • @VanwithTim
      @VanwithTim  2 роки тому

      Hey William, you mentioned it's on its side? The fuel inlet should be on the top (not bottom) if side mounting! @0:13

    I get a drip from my air heater intake tube. Is this a matter of calibrating?

    • @VanwithTim
      @VanwithTim  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Bruce, if it's leaking from the intake tube then you're in the same boat as I was. You'll need to either get a new fuel pump or install a shut-off valve.
      It is important to properly calibrate the heater for your specific setup (every bend / turn in your intake / exhaust pipe causes decreased airflow which causes over-fueling).
      Your elevation will also cause over / under fueling (less air at high elevations = over fueling)
      I would buy a cheap Carbon Monoxide tester with digital readout to assist in tuning your heater settings (after fixing the intake fuel leak issue of course!)
      Cheers!
      -Tim

      @@VanwithTim thanks for your reply tim. My heater still seems to run fine . And I’m at sea level so I’m not really sure of the problem. I have a shut off valve installed near my tank for when the heaters not in use. I guess it’s a matter of lowering the pump setting maybe?

    • @VanwithTim
      @VanwithTim  2 роки тому

      @@fadingveil Is there a huge amount of white smoke at start up that seems to go away after running for an hour or so? If so, it would indicate the fuel is pooling up in the casing after it's shut off and not a pump tuning issue.
      If not, you should check out the master of diesel heaters - David McLuckie here. He goes into a lot of detail on proper tuning of diesel heater settings: ua-cam.com/video/bKyCWGY2OME/v-deo.html
