After having loved this song for years and having watched the low-definition video dozens of times, it was a treat to see the new HD version and to see how it was all done. Also, I thought the scratches in the beginning of the HD version were added in, so I definitely think they are cool! I was always waiting for a video for "Nurse."

This is a really fascinating look, especially considering that the video comes from the sort of apex of how seriously people took music videos and worked to really elevate them artistically. It was an interesting time, because a cool video would come out (the Fatboy Slim "Weapon of Choice" video comes to mind) and everybody would be talking about it, so videos would become these cultural events that they weren't before and maybe never will be again.
Thanks for putting this episode together, Ken. It's such an arresting video, and I loved getting to hear so much great background on it.
Our kids will never understand the appeal of something like "Pop Up Video."

Something I've always wondered about: Phil mentioned the expense of film several times, and god knows how much money a full length album represents in studio time and expertise. Do you have any insight into why companies treat these things so carelessly? Especially since they seem to guard them so jealously like hoary old dragons? If all they plan to do is warehouse the tapes (hopefully not to just burn in the next warehouse fire) why not just give custody of them to the songwriters?

only thing that ever bugged me was how the entire first verse was cut out in the video.

    • @belowtheslidingdoors
      @belowtheslidingdoors 4 роки тому +7

It really does change the context of the lyric and I wouldn't doubt that was somewhat intentional by the label...but I guess after watching this to add that on would have been like +30% cost also.

@@belowtheslidingdoors Yeah i also want to know exactly why the entire first verse was cut out from the video? We got a redux and remaster of the video's audio, when is the remaster of the original album audio? :(

Loved seeing the storyboard and original intent captured so strongly in the final piece. The Saul Bass and Maurice Binder inspiration is so clear. Cool to understand the slow/fast effects. Real film craft! Thanks Ken for sharing this celebration of team behind this timeless video! Wishing Kellii a healthy recovery.

Ok this may be a silly question but it's always plagued me; when you're performing for a music video, how much is mimed versus actually sung/played? I hope my question didn't reveal too much ignorance, lol. 😁

Yeah, usually none of the video is "live" sound wise.
Unless you're Failure making a performance-concept video and you use the live feed for the bridge of the song (Hot Traveler), but you'd have to be a pretty badass band to do that. : )

What a surprising great conversation! I'm also happy to look at the storyboard and know the video deeply.
Thanks to Failure, I could know and watch movies that I wasn't familiar with like 007 the spy who loved me, Fantastic Planet and Tarkovsky.
    I wish I could have a YOTR T-shirt!

I recently got myself my dream bass for my 40th… you can guess what it is. The sound that’s been in my head since I started playing when I was 12, the sound I’ve been largely failing to will out of countless other instruments is FINALLY in my hands. Hate myself for waiting this long.
Anyway… I had somehow managed to avoid going down the Failure rabbit hole before getting this thing, but holy fuck am I glad I’m here. This channel of yours is AMAZING! I’m so grateful for the time you’ve put into sharing your passion, going into all this detail sharing the tricks… I can’t wait to devour it all.
This video is a particularly surprising treat! While I’m not a filmmaker myself, some of my closest friends are and my wife is a photographer. I found this glimpse into ‘90s sausage-making absolutely fascinating. I often think about the “pressure” of burning through 2” tape back in the day and what that does to the vibe in the studio… but this is orders of magnitude more scary. The result is spectacular.
You’ve got great ears, eyes and taste. Thanks again for sharing all this!

Hi Ken. Firstly thank you so much for all of your videos. I am a long time Failure fan and have found your videos so inspiring. Just on inspiration, I was wondering if you could potentially do a video on subjects such as how you stay inspired. How you cope with writers block. With all of the vsts, pedals etc available nowadays, do you feel overwhelmed by options? Im hoping you could maybe do a video on some of your struggles in the creative process and how you may have overcome those. Thanks in advance

I feel so fortunate to have seen this video back when it was first released. It opened up a door with a 26-year love affair with Failure’s music on the other side. No other band has ever spoken to me the way Failure does, and had I not caught this video on MTV on that day, I might have never even known of their existence. It’s just so strange to consider the power of that single moment in time, the power of this song and the incredible beauty of this video. I even took inspiration from it in my animation projects in my undergrad.
I finally got to see Failure live after a 26-year wait, and not only did the experience live up to the hype, but it straight up exceeded it. Ken, Greg and Kellii, thank you very much for taking the time with the fans. It was absolutely amazing, and it was hard not to feel like a 14-year-old kid again!
